Donald Trump announces college football executive order
President Donald Trump on Friday issued an executive order barring College Football Playoff and other postseason games from airing during the annual Army‑Navy football game, directing federal agencies to preserve an exclusive national broadcast window for the rivalry.
The order instructs the secretary of commerce and the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission to coordinate with the College Football Playoff committee, the NCAA and media rights partners to ensure no other college football games are broadcast in direct conflict with Army‑Navy, which is traditionally played on the second Saturday in December.
Army‑Navy Game Protected Amid CFP Expansion Concerns
Trump’s executive order points to the potential expansion of the College Football Playoff as a growing concern, noting that an expanded postseason could require the playoff to begin earlier in December. In the first two seasons of the current 12‑team CFP format, first‑round games were played the weekend following the Army‑Navy matchup.
This year’s Army‑Navy game is scheduled for December 12 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the home of the NFL’s New York Giants and New York Jets. The CFP first‑round games are scheduled for December 18 and 19.
College football officials have discussed the possibility of expanding the playoff to 24 teams, a move that would require at least one additional week of games and could push the postseason deeper into early December. Starting the playoff earlier in the month would be one option under such a model. A smaller expansion to 16 teams has also been discussed and would not necessarily add additional weeks to the postseason schedule.
