Melendez's Gem Leads Hornets Past Rattlers To Open Key SWAC Series​


MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Omar Melendez tossed seven shutout innings with eight strikeouts to help Alabama State University take a key 1-0 win over Florida A&M University on Friday at the Wheeler-Watkins Basketball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams combined for three hits through the first six innings.
  • Will Brown singled but was stranded after Omar Melendez got two strikeouts swinging to end the inning.
  • Alabama State took a 1-0 lead in the seventh. Ali Lapread stroked a one-out double and scored on a Corey King single.
  • Joseph Pierini led off the eighth with a double only to be thrown out at the plate by Lapread to keep the Hornets lead at 1-0.
  • Luis Rodriguez struck out the side in the ninth to end the game.
ON THE MOUND
  • Omar Melendez (8-0) posted eight strikeouts while scattering four hits over 7.0 scoreless innings as the winning pitcher.
  • Hunter Viets (5-0) gave up one run on five hits with two strikeouts to suffer the loss for the Rattlers.
  • Rodriguez (5) limited FAMU to one hit and struck out five to record the save.

Hornets Sweep Series from FAMU With 13-10 Win on Sunday​



MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State Hornets earned an important SWAC conference victory over Florida A&M University on Sunday, earning a sweep of the series and sole possession of first place in the division at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex. The win was the 10th straight in conference play for the Hornets which gave them a three-game lead in the East with three conference series left in the regular season. The win was also the 30th of the season, just the seventh time in school history the program has reached that number.

HOW IT HAPPENED
· ASU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning that included a run-scoring single from Ali Lapread and a double off the bat of Corey King that plated a run.

· The Rattlers scored a run in the second on a solo home run from Sebastian Greico (one of two for him on the day) before ASU added two more runs with a home run from Randy Flores and a bases-loaded walk to Lepread.

· After a two-run homer by FAMU's Joseph Pierini in the top of the fourth, the Hornets scored four times in their half of the inning with the highlight coming on a two-run single by Cristian Lopez. Two ASU batters were hit by a pitch (Ian Matos and King, with his HBP forcing in a run) and a bases-loaded walk to Lapread.

· FAMU scored a run in the fifth but the Hornets answered in the bottom of the sixth on another two-run single by Lopez.
· The Rattlers' biggest inning came in the top of the eighth when they scored four runs, two of which was on a homer by Ty Hanchey. But ASU got two runs back in the bottom of the inning with Lepread's team-leading 10th home run of the season and Kerrigan Edmondson's single that scored King.

Quick Start Propels Hornets Past Mississippi Valley State​


MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Randy Flores, Kyler McIntosh, and Cristian Lopez combined for 14 RBI, and Alabama State University baseball homered five times to take a 16-5 win over Mississippi Valley State University on Friday at the MVSU Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hornets plated 10 runs on seven hits, including four home runs in the top of the first inning. Kyler McIntosh hit a two-run and solo home run followed by a three-run shot from Cristian Lopez and Randy Flores.
  • Mississippi Valley put up a run on a Draylin Holmes RBI single to trail 10-1 at the end of the first.
  • Lopez's RBI single in the third extended the Hornets' lead to 11-1.
  • McIntosh registered his fourth RBI, driving home Jamal George in the fourth to make the score 12-1.
  • The Delta Devils scored a run in the fourth to cut the lead to 12-2.
  • The Hornets scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 15-2 lead. Flores had a two-run double, and Kerrigan Edmondson had a pinch-hit RBI single.
  • Draylin Holmes hit a two-run home run to trim ASU's lead to 15-4.
  • Lopez belted a solo round-tripper in the sixth to move the lead to 16-4.
  • Jack Hay delivered a two-run single in the seventh to increase the lead to 18-4.
  • MVSU scored an unearned run on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh to make the final 18-5.
 

BamaStateBB Nips UAB, 6-5​



MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State University baseball scored a run in the seventh to break a 5-5 tie and claim a 6-5 wi over UAB on Tuesday at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Corey King got the scoring started with a solo home run to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead in the second inning,
  • The Hornets claimed a 2-0 lead when Trent Jamison singled and later scoerd on a Kyler McIntosh sacrifice fly in the third.
  • Alabama State added three runs in the fourth to build the lead to 5-0. Corey King singled and scored on a Cristian Lopez double to right-center field to make the score 3-0 in the fourth. King scored when Randy Flores reached on a fielder's choice and Chrisitan Lopez scored on a McIntosh single.
  • UAB plated five runs in the seventh to tie the game 5-5 in the seventh.
  • The Hornets reclaimed a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Randy Flores singled and later scored from second base on a wild pitch after advancing to second on an error.
 



Will somebody ask the SWAC office is it that difficult to provide update and correct standings?
SU is NOT in 2nd place in the west.
