Formalizing ‘The Smoke’ — Will the Alcorn Braves maintain their prominence in the new SWAC?

Alcorn State was never really a disciplined and well run program. They were just the best in the SWAC but never beat any notable non-SWAC opponents. JSU I feel will be very disciplined and well run ... also will defeat notable non-SWAC FCS opponents

JSU will do what? Based on what factors? You got a first-time head coach no one knows what in the hell will call when its 4th and 1 and 7 seconds left. Until he does so and prove it consistently you go with Alcorn

Alcorn has done more with less but hires folks who "fit" their culture so technically they are overachieving. They have the rings to prove it and you know what McNair will do. Alcorn has lost more coaches to FBS than many people know.

They've replaced one winning coach with another ad little dropoff.

Its HIS opinion lmao. He can choose whoever he want.

As for Alcorn. They’ve done well. Alcorn will be Alcorn , but their dominance going forward will be parodied with stiffer competition that closed the gap on them with the arrival of FAMU, the revitalization of JSU, Gram figuring Alcorn out (last season), and Lady Luck will run out with Southern eventually for worms sake I hope lol. Alcorn will not be able to take a surprising L here and there and still cruise to a championship. I believe they’ll have their years still but Gram , SU, and PV gone have something to say with them moving West. Keep an eye on TXSU and PB as the season spoilers too because they’re capable too. On any given Saturday.

I've noticed that you've had some stark criticisms of Alcorn's program and "dominance" over the years and that's your prerogative.

I'd like to hear your reasonings as to how Alcorn ever maintained it's supposed unimpressive success over a short time period

The SWAC was ranked the last "best" FCS conference all those years .... it didn't take much effort. However, with Deion I feel the profile of the conference will improve drastically .... ripple effect.

It’ll be harder. Competition has elevated Brave... now we’ll really see who really wants the smoke.... Seeing JSU lose for 7 years.... I’ve learned to cherish what is earned in this conference the landscape can change for any 12 schools towards an aggressive coach hire, solid recruiting class, a team nobody saw coming, or an upset. Best of luck this spring or fall season. Nothings predictable anymore. Come fall it won’t be SU vs Alcorn for the ship... it’ll be whoever is the best that season from their division and hell on earth to prove that title of east/west winners.

Whoaaaaaaaa!!!! Undisciplined Alcorn St, where?

The last two meetings vs PVAMU, the discipline they possessed coupled w/ the undiscipline we had, imho, earned them Ws and was the true difference maker. Especially their QB, OL, DL/LBer play.

I haven't looked 2018/2019 stats but I will be shocked if Alcorn St was top-3 penalized team like we have traditionally been.

Alcorn St's efforts over the last few years IC & OOC have been more than admirable. The ONLY game they lost which left a bad taste in my mouth was the mcneese st game last fall, ditto w/ SU's loss to the same lower-3rd rival conference member w/ a 1st yr coaching staff. A loss to a team like that one should never occur by the SWAC elite division winners.

+1.

I believe everyone across the board has quietly ramped up in the east besides JSU. Alabama St, AAMU, FAMU, BCU, & Valley have all moved positively forward.

SU, GSU, UAPB, Alcorn St, and sTu (that formula w/ the last recruiting class look so... familiar... hmmmmm... we see you!!!) have all moved positively forward.

6 years but I get your point that's 6 too many lol.

We are behind the ball as far as Spring goes as some teams were able to have fall camp. We will have a very short window to get things up and going but from all accounts the staff is well prepared (which i love). Our WR coach should be on campus in January (still under contract till year-end). Its a good thing our schedule starts out weak as that should give us a few games to work the kinks out. I wouldn't want to be aamu/alcorn with a potential east showdown right out the gate. If the spring season does happen we should be in good shape. 13 of our 19 signees from this recent class should be eligible to play in the Spring (2 December signing classes no one has seen before).

Panth you can stop leaving PV out of your assessments as if we are going to sleep on y'all. Dooley stay loaded. Once that DL gets up to par the Swac better watch out. Its only a matter of time.

Probably shouldnt be saying anything about who Alcorn didnt beat after an 0-11 season

Deion ain’t playing a down - fb is the one sport nearly everyone in the league tries at. It won’t be a cakewalk and teams aren’t trying to better themselves cause of him. If anything this makes beating jackson more for everyone else like how it was when you beat southern in the 90s

Doug Williams at Grambling had teams just as talented or more around his 3rd year and he fought to win games.

We cannot be talking about the SAME Alcorn that outcoahed and then had players really execute their own plays, drills, and disciplined approach to not backing off anybody at the line. They have consistently scouted for everyone in this conference and then put the metal to all of us. No..it wasn't a cakewalk and they've never said it was but who has unseated them? They lost to an Ayantee that would've also dusted us all. Cmon man...🤣

Not quite the answer I was looking for, the SWAC has been at or near the bottom of FCS long before Alcorn's run. You have to give me something better than this

We don’t expect everyone to lay down. Whole plan is to make them.

Don't worry, let's see what Beenie Segal have to say about it.
