SWAC announces to postpone all 2020 fall sports due to COVID-19

I am not in favor of spring football (really only about 3 months for an offseason) BUT I can see the huge potential upside of it especially with the SWAC possibly being the only D1 conference with a plan thus far for it and filling the post Super Bowl void

Throw in the bands and you could have something special that Dr. Mac can take to ESPN and ask for a blank check

Assuming the virus is under control, securing a tv contract is the only way a spring football season makes any sense. Otherwise, it's a massive waste of money. No FBS payouts...reduced revenue at the gate but still on the hook for travel, testing, and other expenses.

if everyone wore a mask and washed their hand we wouldn't have to have a vaccine, but ... if "if" was a fifth, we'd all be drunk.

I know exactly what you mean. But we did not do what needed to be done back in February and March and so we are suffering the consequences now. But, if "ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we would all have a merry Christmas".

"We could be on to something that could be very very remarkable and magical"? Really? Maybe I am comparing apples and oranges, but didn't the now defunct United States Football League (USFL) try to operate in the spring? How did that turn out? You may say that SWAC football in the spring is just a one time thing, so that would be be the difference. I guess it is worth a try, but I agree with @DallasCowboyGirl , spring football makes no sense to me.

I can see a Spring Season as for most schools, football revenue supports all the other sports. Because HCBU fans, tend to not support the schools through contributions, that revenue stream has to be there. And yes, I do support my school financially.

It really gave them a bigger window of decision making. no need to decide by october if you can play. you don't have to decide now until march now.

That's the main reason why a postponement is better than straight up cancelling. They now hit the reset button as far as the start of the season with March now being the know and basically 8 months for this stuff to get under control. Plus it allows the SWAC to go back to ESPN and, as Dr. McClelland has said , "Pay me now or pay me later".

Why would there be reduced revenue at the gate?

Man the thought of having a Spring Homecoming game and then basketball game is very intriguing

I'm just gonna let the people that get paid the big bucks handle this because he and the people around him seem to have most of this thought out

Basketball is going to be intriguing.

#1. We have flexibility in football since we dont participate in the playoffs.
#2. Thats not the case with basketball. We are at the mercy of the big boys and the NCAA tourney.
#3. If the big boys are hell bent on starting basketball in November, what does that mean for us?
#4. We cant put bball on the same schedule as football (8 weeks of practice starting in January) because there would be no time for a season after practice if the NCAA tourney is not delayed.
#5. Is it feasible to house and feed 20 basketball players/staff for November and December and allow the kids to only play a conference only schedule starting in Jan?

There should realistically be little overlap in basketball and football after the first two weeks in March. So homecoming then bball might be unrealistic since the bball REGULAR season will end the week before football begins.

The USFL ultimately failed when a certain current US president convinced the other team owners to move the season to fall, directly compete against the NFL and sue the NFL on antitrust laws. The USFL won, but for like $1 and 45 called it "small potatoes."
