Bill Harris Arena (Fair Park) is booked the week of the SWAC Tourney. The City of Birmingham has worked out the particulars to host at UAB. The SWAC still reaps all financial benefits from the event. Years ago, when Bham was hosting and Fair Park had not been upgraded - I approached the previous SWAC Commish about doing this exact same thing-I already had the deal in place with the AD at UAB at the time. The previous Commish rejected the idea and said we could not utilize non SWAC venues for Championship events - this was said while the indoor Track and Field Championships were being held at LSU and outdoor was scheduled for Troy....my response was "negro....." and my exit from his office.

Remember a few years ago I posted that the only SWAC school with a facility capable of hosting a tourney is Valley (as far as by their standards like officials locker rooms, etc.) so that is why the SWAC would never consider it. Now we are here smh lol
The BJCC and it's renovations have nothing to do with the SWAC/UAB. The SWAC was going to be held at Bill Harris (different from the BJCC). Bill Harris was already booked. The City facilitated the usage of Bartow Arena at UAB since it would not be in use at that time.

I don't get why it is not being played in Texas or Louisiana. Your 2 Texas teams are the favorites to play in it as it relates to the Men and for the Women its JSU, Southern, PV, or Texas Southern.
As a fan , TSU, that travels to the tournament, probably haven't missed one in a while, i need to know where the tourney is in advance to secure cheaper flights and hotel accomodations. Now, as a TSU fan i do have the advantage of knowing my team will be there. Believe me there is not enough ticket sales revenue to worry about.

The renovations going on at the BJCC are to accomodate the G-League team of the New Orleans Pelicans, which will be based there in Birmingham.
Here's the deal: The Birmingham Crossplex/Bill Harris Arena is booked March 13 and 14 due to a D2 Track and Field Championship Games that weekend. The BJCC is open on those days but I suspect it was felt that the size of the Arena and Cost involved were too high. It does not close due to construction until April 1st. I suspect UAB was probably cool with the idea of allowing us to use their Arena and their charges to the City of Birmingham for weekend rental and services was probably minimal cost.

I don't know what has gotten into these airlines and hotels in Birmingham. The flights from Houston are not cheap this year and the hotel prices that weekend are up there too. I've been looking at it also.
The renovations are not as an accomodation for the G-League, the arena already is more than capable of hosting right now. This is a 2 prong renovation - the BJCC has not been upgraded since the '70's while at the same time the new stadium is being constructed across the street. So the renovations are in conjunction with the new stadium. It will shut down after the last event the final week of March. Estimated time is 18 months.
