Football is king. A good football program can actually be an asset to enrollment numbers as well. It is crazy to even think about cutting football in a football rich conference and defer to basketball. That is sort of a D-2 mindset.....

Point being, the take is crazy because the idea of "getting back to the good ole days" is crazy.

Nobody in the SWAC is going to do what it takes to compete nationally in basketball. It would require multiple schools doubling their basketball expenses

Then AAU slowly started to chip away and the talent level wasn’t nowhere what it used to be.

The last good Mississippi class was Strib’s team in 2003-04 and Jackson had some bright spots when trey Johnson was there. After that the talent disappeared overnight

Yep. It was always plenty of talent. Hell Whitney got Eddie Archie and Aaron Brandon from my High School (Callaway) and the player of the year from Vicksburg in Michael Phelps. Callaway and Vicksburg had just played for the State Title. Jackson HS's Callaway, Murrah, Provine, Forest Hill all had players in the 80s and into the 90s. Mark Coleman went to Valley from Forest Hill I believe. Lloyd, Reginald Jones, Jeff Samuel and Henry Rattler all went to PV from Callaway in 84. Just think cats like Lancaster Gordon, and others went to the Louisvilles of the world.

Ms has produced Derek McKey who went to Bama and Antonio McDyess who went to Bama. Bama stayed in MS recruiting. Hollywood Robinson to Mo Williams. Not mention the Othella Harrington's, Chris Jackson's of the world went on to Power schools.

So true! Now youth Basketball is full of corruption with this mess and the sad thing is, our kids are not really learning how to play ball.

But I love this post about SWAC History.
 
While Looking at the NBA Finals tonight, I thought about this thread. One thing that was not mentioned is the SWAC is also home of the Greats Willis Reed (Grambling) & Bob Love (Southern). It really wouldn't be right talking about SWAC basketball history without mentioning those two.....Ron Barrow (S.U.), Larry Smith (Alcorn) & Larry Wright (Grambling) are a few other names that weren't mentioned. I guess there were so many excellent basketball players we have been graced by until it's easy to sometimes forget.

Football gets the spotlight with the amount that are in the hall of fame and the presence of various BCF HOFs that continue to honor them.

That's a fact. However, the thread was initially geared towards basketball history, thus the remark.

1. No D1 football team will score 59-60 points a game again lol
2. Vincent Brown at one point was the all time leading tackler across all divisions. Don't know if he still is

Al was #4 for years until this past season when he was bumped down to #5.

Patricia Hoskins is also #5 on the all-time scoring list (D1 women).

(Al Ford is not in the MS Sports Hall of Fame for whatever reason. Hoskins is not in the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame)

I know but we need third party outlets to keep spreading the word which makes it easier. ESPN broadcasts tend to spotlight football history more than basketball history due to recognizable names.
NFL network has done specials, etc.

Outside of Black Magic we don’t see much on hbcu Basketball.

But after watching phi Slamma Jamma documentary last night our second generation legends we should’ve had were duds at major schools.

A guy like Bennie Anders should’ve been at a Grambling instead of a UH.

And as funny as it is a lot of b-ball records aren’t as accessible as football but it’s more up to the schools to Carr y the b-ball weight
