Guest Column: The mind of Alcorn’s Fred McNair, a common thread

Thanks for doing this on Coach McNair. He is one of the good guys and deserves it. No longer in the shadows of Hopson, that monkey is off his back. Hope he stays and continues to build the program.

Very underrated and it seems, at least from the outside under-appreciated by his administration. Since Hopson took over with a very good staff (including Fred) and then Fred took over Alcorn is a VERY legit FCS team and a SWAC power. Any insight into why the administration does not fully support him or am I reading this wrong?

In my opinion Coach McNair is much appreciated by the administration, alumni and by the A-Club which is a huge supporter of Alcorn football. However, coach has a motto that we all have hatched on to, "In spite of", there are challenges at the HBCU level in MS but what coach needs "in spite of" the challenges we are going to get them for him. He is an Alcorn guy an very appreciated.

Well I am glad to hear that. Having coached football in The SWAC and in Mississippi I am aware of the challenges. I have met Fred on several occasions and he always seemed like a good guy. He certainly has Alcorn going in the right direction.

agreed we love McNair. His first year was rocky but he has certainly righted the ship.

He really does, seems nobody can rock Spinks-Casem like a McNair can

For all the championships Alcorn has participated in or won I'm surprised the state of Mississippi hadn't acknowledge them. Atleast have some type of recognition by the governor or mayor.

I agree that there should be some type of recognition by the state, but this is still the Kirk Fordice, Haley Barbour, & Phil Bryant Mississippi of shame.

This is the same Mississippi that keeps cutting the budgets of Valley, JSU and Alcorn each other so I don't think any of us would expect these people to acknowledge positive things going on at the SWAC schools outside of photo ops

The Mississippi State Legislature provides a resolution recognizing the team on their win and has in the past invited them to be recognized in the House chambers. There is a concurrent resolution in the house and senate for this legislative session.

yes The state has recognized Alcorn championship seasons. We'll see if they continue to do so this time.
