Dawson Odums proposes end of divisional play in SWAC among changes to championship game

On his weekly radio show, the Southern head coach said he’d like to see the SWAC abolish the divisional play the league has long used to decide the best two teams in favor of the best two overall teams regardless of division.

“We should go away from divisions if we play eight games,” he said. “We should say the championship is going to come down to the first- and second-place teams. You may have to beat somebody twice, but at least at the end of the day you get the best two teams playing for a championship.”

I don’t agree with the previous champion. What if AAMU is champion, and SU and JSU makes the championship.

Good point...... But to eliminate that from happening Southern and j st must do its part by not allowing Aamu to be champion the previous year. Thats were the competition part comes in to play in this new format of the championship.

I love it! It creates competition.... If I was commissioner y'all would hate me. I would have every tournament and championship game on campus.

I'm more of a fan of the C-USA model (best record hosts) than the previous year's champion hosting. Personally, I would prefer no SCG and an 8-game conference schedule just to give the winning team as much time to prep for the Celebration Bowl as possible.

However, with the SCG, I would still keep division play and have the division winner with the best record host. Don't like Valley hosting, then beat them. Don't like Southern hosting, then beat them. Unless Charles can broker a neutral site deal that's damned good for all parties, then don't have it at a neutral site.

Players and coaches would irritated by having to come on your rival schools campus for a championship game. It will give coaches and players extra motivation to make that situation change by beating them on the field.

I don't either. That's too much of an advantage, especially if both teams have the same record. On top of that, they get an overwhelming financial advantage for their school and city.
Should be at a neutral site with the winner getting a ten percent greater payout than the losing team..

I get that, but my issue isn't the "advantage" factor. My issue is more to do with the fact that some of our (SWAC) venues simply are not adequately equipped to handle events like this. It may not matter much to most, but media accommodations are essential. Some of the press boxes are too small, do not provide appropriate Internet access, etc.

Which schools?
 
In my opinion keep the E/W alignment but schedule maker needs to change the crossover games on an annual basis. That was brutal not o have a bye for 10 weeks.

Most of these issues should be taken care of before next season. All schools are supposed to broadcast all their home games by next year. If they are not they should be fined by the SWAC and put on probation until the problem is corrected. Any team that is on probation should not be allowed to host the championship game.

Let's see if our new commissioner handles this the right way.

People were quick to jump on Valley about not having replay and press boxes and all that yet the 2nd smallest school (budget wise) in the SWAC broadcasts all home games and has replay. All of our schools got issues so to keep insinuating that certain schools aren't capable of hosting is just wrong. If we wanna keep it 100, JSU, ASU and maybe Southern are the only schools that I would feel that could accommodate almost any possible matchup stadium wise

I am in favor of anything that doesn't cause the conference to lose money. If that means Alcorn has to accommodate for an overflow crowd, then let Alcorn have to worry about that this year but let them reap the benefits of a good regular season.

And keep the East/West format but go up to 8 games. We don't wanna do the MEAC format

Neither one of those stadiums has anything ghat Louis Crews doesn’t have.
 
My vote is to leave the divisions alone and continue with playing at a neutral site. I blame jackson state and Bama State for all of this mess for fielding weak teams.
