SWAC Football Coaches Teleconference – Week 4

I'm a little surprised by the comments made by Donald Hill-Eley regarding playing Kennesaw State (an FCS opponent).

No, the comment he made in saying that he would NOT have scheduled KSU if it were left up to him.
Just heard that smh. If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. Now I don't think like the way our schedule is set up this season. We don't play another home game until November and have 6 tough games to open the season.

I don't know what happened. There were some technical challenges that I simply can't explain. I will see what I can do to get a replacement. Sorry guys. (SMH)

Not the best thing to say. The games are scheduled, he knew that when he took the job. We played them tough last year, loosing 14-20 in a hard fought game. They are FCS and within 2.5 hours drive. Who are we supposed to play? I proposed we play ALL FCS teams inside the state of Alabama when we can. We should play Jacksonville State every year. Who do we want to be? I keep asking that as a Hornet and as a conference. Who do we want to be? Are we gonna do what it takes to compete, or are we content being a run-of-the-mill HBCU?
I propose that we be an HBCU and and HBCU conference that kicks ass at the FCS level.

Kennesaw State has an 8k seat stadium and the worst parking situation of ANY stadium that I have ever visited. However, that 8k seat stadium is well run and well laid out. They have sponsors galore and recruit like hell.

I agree 100% with everything you said. If not Kennesaw State (an FCS team) who the hell do you play?

I have said this before and will say it again. The SWAC, with this current scheduling format, is in a very unique position to have its cake and eat it too. If properly used, each of our schools can use these 4 open dates to play teams from other conferences that can really give us some idea of how we stack against other FCS conferences.

FAMU is down the highway. That should be standard.

I keep having service interruptions, what did he say (long story short)?
What I heard, and I'm sure he'd dispute it, is he doesn't want to have to compete against fcs competition outside of the 2 hbcu conferences. He doesn't want KSU, jax state, north alabama, samford. All those teams would kick their tail. Keep in mind, they have 2 more years to play kennesaw, not that he needs to concern himself with that. If they can't get it together he'll be sitting with us fans.
There is no excuse for getting beat like that. Kennesaw had to endure the same delay they had to. This is their problem...Tuskegee ran for 273 yards, Auburn ran for 429 yards, Kennesaw ran for 417 yards. That there is the problem. If grambling has any kind of coaching they will run it until bama state gets back on the bus. If Grambling throws it more than 10x in the half they need to fire the coach. Now, who does he think they are supposed to beat when teams running on you like they've got the great mickey dean in the backfield? They won't beat Carver High School if they let them run the ball like that.

Anyone that saw Kennesaw State play prior to the Bama State game would have known they would try to run the ball down the opposing team throats. It is the Coach's fault that his team was not prepared. If he doesn't want to play KSU then he probably needs to find a high school coaching gig. The other alternative is to toughen up, get on the recruiting trail and hire some assistant coaches that are smarter than him. The hell? LOL

I agree with him about not scheduling a team like Auburn though. However, with 4 non conference games, you have to at the very least play FCS teams every now and then. That's not to say you have to lock yourself into long contract with one team.

Butch Alsandor sounds like he is prepping to be an analyst to call one of Grambling's ESPN games....
