BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – When Dillon Beard hauled in an 8-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Austin Howard, the energy from turf to ceiling inside the Mercedes Benz-Superdome eight months ago completely shifted.

Since an early, opening quarter, 6-0 lead in 2016, Southern hadn't led its bitter rival Grambling State in the Bayou Classic. Howard’s second touchdown pass on the Saturday after Thanksgiving afternoon in New Orleans put Southern up, 21-20 with 5:02 remaining, marking the latest the Jaguars had held the scoreboard advantage over the Tigers in the annual rivalry game since the 10:45 third-quarter mark in the 2015 clash.

But the last three Bayou Classics eventually ended the same way, with Grambling winning and advancing on to represent the Western Division in the SWAC Championship Game the following weekend.

“We got a little bit overexcited with the score, leading in the fourth quarter,” said Southern senior tight end Dennis Craig at SWAC Media Day earlier this month. “Next year coming out, we have to finish.”

In the three straight Bayou Classic defeats, Southern had its best chance a year ago to snap the streak. It outgained Grambling State, 303-293, its defense held the Tigers to its lowest offensive output since Fobbs has been the coach, it won the possession battle, all on top of leading the game with 5:02 to go.

The Jags’ almost-heroes, Howard and Beard, are both gone. Running back Herbert Edwards is gone. All-Conference corner Danny Johnson has graduated and is now with the Washington Redskins. Southern returns a couple of key playmakers from 2017 in running back Devon Bell and wide receiver Kendall Catalon.

GSU lost a lot of its firepower, too, with the graduation of quarterback DeVante Kincade and Carter. For the most part, Odums will have a mostly new cast of characters, but he hopes he and his coaching staff can piece together a successful bunch, coupled with the ones that felt the sting in last year’s regular season finale loss.

I think with the addition of spring, it will help us get back to that level where we belong.
You are already at your highest achievable level in the West. 2nd place behind arguably the best ever HCBU football program is not an easy feat. Besides, given what the icon has coming back on defense the next 3 years, SU has just a puncher’s chance of reclaiming any titles under professor Fobbs. The game is often won in the trenches.......GSU and Co. own them trenches decisively going forward on both sides of the ball. Let me make this final case for why I know SU’s chances are slim to none to claim the West. GSU’s defense is so talented that the offense will find it difficult to out score them in most games.

Lol I like your confidence. But unfortunately thats what me and you differ. I don't have confidence in your team or coach like you do. I completely trust My Jags and our coaching staff. Will Grambling be able to score with the departure of Eric Dooley? Will the defense be on the field to long this season? Who's Grambling starting QB? Who replaces Grambling kicker from a year ago? But we will see come thee weekend of thanksgiving. Oh yea, I do believe we gave yall a victory last year so just say thanks to us.

Will Grambling be able to score with the departure of Eric Dooley?

Dooley was only utilizing a small part of our playbook last year or the season before. We opened our playbook during the Celebration Bowl. Part of our problem from last years compared to the year prior were the receivers. Out defense kicked in....this year our defense will be better as our offense may slow down.

Who's Grambling starting QB?

Decision has not been made yet. Also, you may not be aware but Kincade didn't work out in our spring training his first season at GSU because his broken foot was still healing. Our coaching staff knows how to coach a kid up to par. This coaching up was noted in the article when we come out of the dressing room in the 3rd quarter. WE MAKE ADJUSTMENTS!!! Hence supporting my notion of coaching a player up.

Who replaces Grambling kicker from a year ago?

Nobody...we will have the same kicker as last season. He took a year off to take care of his father who had cancer.

Oh yea, I do believe we gave yall a victory last year so just say thanks to us.

I am so damn sick of you all saying you "gave" us a fucking win. Man stop that.....your coaches did not make adjustments after half time....hence your coaches suck. Simple as that. Stop using that "dick in the booty ass" excuse of you all gave us something....yea by saying you gave us something sounds like an excuse...a stanky ass excuse.

Lol... Somebody in there feelings. But we will see when that time comes. Its a long season and bayou classic is in November. I want this same confidence yall have today when November hits.

Last year's classic was a good defensive game. We bitch and moan about teams not playing defense ... but Southern gaining 303 total yards and Grambling 293 and the game was decided in the fourth quarter ...

IMO, Grambling had an edge on the outside last year because due we didn't have a receiver that could physically win a one-on-one matchup outside down the field. That being said, we couldn't keep Grambling honest.

There is some optimism because Southern defensively moved up from the 80s to the low 40s nationally in total defense, and made some positive steps forward last season. Yep, we lose Danny Johnson and Aaron Tiller (I do think lack of a pass rush outside of him was a bad thing last season). However, this is Trei Oliver's third year with the defense and some of us Southern folk are looking for that unit to make a big step forward.

We're glad we're out of the sanctions, but some of us are going into this season with a healthy dose of cautious optimism.

I've said this before: The West will be decided by whoever gets their house in order at QB.

*dust off the old L couch* southern the couch will be waiting on y’all when another L is recieved. Rumor has it, y’all may put y’all coach on the hot seat if there is another Grambling L on y’alls resume

Well Worm does have two seasons left on this contract, this one and 2019. Soooooooo, lets just say these next two seasons without sanctions are going to be very important to him

And the punch is like a straight right hand from Glass Joe - simply futile. The Icon of BCF is on dominant run like 70s and most recently during Doug’s first stint.
This run by Grambling is a bit overrated. Over the last three years, the SWAC has been very weak, especially in the East, while Grambling has remained an average team.
Still though, Fobbs deserves the credit he's being given.
Right now, in my opinion, he's the best coach in the conference.

Them hillbillies don't need to be made no more uglier than what they already are.

Lol. All damn.

Well, the number of new era SU men walking around at the BC who want to be Dancing Dolls and AKA’s is much uglier than a bunch of hillbillies.

The SWAC has been weak for a long long time. You have to be rated to be overrated.

As far as Fobbs, his SWAC record puts him at the top even if folks don’t respect his coaching skills. So far, he recruits like a GM and he coaches like a man not scared to take risk. All of that has equaled to 2 SWAC titles and 1 CB title in 4 years.
