Who Agrees with the Odums Philosophy Relative to Transfers?

I believe they should take that in consideration. Coach O has endured more with less the last couple of years. Driving to high school stadiums to practice football, no spring practice, and restrictions. These 2 years is going to tell you alot about him.

So to be clear the APR restrictions are an excuse as to why Odums has not done as good as he could do? That seems to be the resounding theme from many of the SU posters. In almost all of those who have commented each has mentioned this in one way or another.

Like i also said these 2 seasons are going to tell you alot about him. No excuses no restrictions. Coach O got all the tools he needs to win championships now. He's got depth at every position, he is fully loaded this year I can not wait. The man can coach, I'm just ready for the season to start.

Ok so that's been validated the restrictions were the reasons coach Odums could not get over the hump per se. Thanks for admitting that.

I don't think the restrictions made a difference....I think it was lackluster coaching. Yet, after halftime Oduns made no coaching adjustments. I strongly remember a Bayou Classic where our kickers were told not to kick to that fast kick off returner you all had....BUT SU kept kicking to ours.

Then instead of playing a zone defense Odums calls for man coverage against our receivers who were killing SU in 2016. The year we had Chad who is now with the Arizona Cardinals.

Then in 2017 we just plain ass ran away from SU.

Honestly, last season our offense just capitalized out of what our defense gave us. In 2016 our offense was a beast. This season our defense will be a beast and once we find our QB the classic will come down to coaching again.

Yea in 2016 yall were the better team. Lol I'm a football guy Coach Dooley threw the entire play book at us lol. No matter what defense we threw at yall, yall did stuff our coaches hadn't seen on film about yall that season. Like i said we will see this year. Coach O has all the bullets he needs to go to Atlanta.

The APR restrictions (namely scholarship losses) could've meant a couple of kids who made a difference. Not making an excuse about Worm's performance. We Southern folks think it's a testament to Worm's staff and the young men to play as well as they've had with those restrictions. If anything, we're optimistic about this season and the 2019 season with what we have.

Just like other programs, we've been snakebitten with recruits. QB Ladarius Skelton went the JUCO route when he was supposed to sign with us out of Pine Bluff HS. However, he's found his way back. WR Hunter Register went to Minnesota, but we offered him out of high school. Curtlan Williams is back with us after he had to sit out (not for academic reasons). However, Worm and company made strategic decisions in recruiting and development ... and those decisions have kept us in the hunt when we shouldn't have been in the hunt.

Like this point: For years under the sanction, the only time the coaches could really work with players was when fall camp started. The players themselves worked out with the strength coach, basically run their own spring drills, teach each other the offense, etc. Also, the DC had to install his defense in fall camp and on the fly. As you can attest to, just getting your players to understand their roles on defense is harder to do in live action than having the spring to install and teach.

We're saying Worm's won nearly two-thirds of his game at Southern with these restrictions. Now that we're out from those sanctions, we want to see what they can do with a full offseason with the players and a full allotment of scholarships to give in the recruiting cycle.

Bear in mind though, Worm has this season and 2019 left on his contract. If we win SWAC and Celebration Bowl in one of those two seasons, he would've made a strong case for extending his contract.

Actually that was not the entire playbook. Our receivers were just uncontrollable.

SU had better get like the big schools who have APR issues....the playbook and defensive schemes magically end up being left in the eight room. LOL

Fobbs is going to do musical chairs with out QBs....I hate that Bacone game got cancelled and the new game moved. Those early season games give us an evaluation time.....

Dooley, contrary to what most believe, did not open out playbook as much and in my opinion many players were under utilized and it showed in both Celebration Bowl games.

That's Dooley's flaw....

We're in the same boat as Grambling at the QB position. I'm still saying whoever's first to solve their their QB musical chairs between Southern and Grambling will win the West.

I agree with you on Dooley not opening the book up in the Celebration Bowl.

That could be an excuse from some of them, but not me. I think Odums is a great recruiter and I am a fan of the kids that he goes after. Unlike many coaches in the SWAC, he jumps on talent extremely early even if a kid already has plenty FBS offers or commited to a G5/P5. Being a sports-game, I have seen him in action. Odums throws some very good pitches at prime high schoolers. I am talking about curve balls! The man talks deeply about great rivalries between SU-JSU, SU-GSU, the Celebration Bowl, Bayou Classics, and most of all, the SU fans. I am telling ya, he does a good job of promoting SU, and the other programs of the SWAC that make it a major event. I can go into details of what I have heard out of his mouth and from other coaches I know throughout the state. At the end of the day, I give him the upmost respect for the way he recruits.

Now, the way I feel about him as a HC is another story. I always clowned my SU family during BC’s and the SCG when I tell them Les Miles and Odums both drink out of the same swamp hole in Baton Rouge because it ruins their ability to make good decisions in big moments. That’s why I also picked any coach who coaches well from the sidelines to beat the both of them in big games. I don’t think much of him on the headset.

Talent can overcome coaching in the SWAC. I am giving SU a better shot this year based on my detective log after spying on them. Lol. They have the talent, and depth chart this year to battle in the trenches. There DB’s will finally have some extra fuel they haven’t been able to keep in the tank in 4 years. Y’all know I am a realist and want to blow them away 77-3 to shut them and their blind left balls from SUNO up, but the Jags are locked and loaded with raw talent this year and can beat everyone in the SWAC. I didn’t say they will, but I am saying that they can.

No... Kincade's limitations are why your offense didn't look as good as it could have. He only had Carter to bail him out unlike the previous season when he had Chad and Verlan catching everything thrown their vicinity.

We're keeping our good eyes (Thanks @Bewildered ) on you boys up in the piney woods LOL.

It is going to be interesting.

So should Odums be granted another contract since many SU folks are using the crippling probation as a reason why SU has not won as many championships?

To me that is what is being said....since his contract is up next year...should the school renew it based on the APR infraction punishments.
Man, some of these southern folks make excuse after excuse during the "off season", but during the season many of them criticize Odoms for simple calls that should've been made on offense or defense. They tear the man a new one, especially when Odom gets blown out by them other Louisiana schools.
Now it's....we didn't have this much time or this amount of players on offense or defense during the "off" season.
Some other excuse will come up next year. Just ask that sujagtili dude.

I think y’all forget SU has been on crippling probation. Now we are off. Let’s see what happens from here on out. SU is loaded with depth.
Who was that coach that said, "I don't want excuses, I want results?"
Like someone said earlier, Odoms ability to make adjustments, not only AFTER halftime, but BEFORE halftime, kills him time and again. His defense gives up too many big plays on third down.
If your players are getting killed one on one, why keep them in a man to man defense instead of making a simple adjustment to zone....in the first half?
When you need one yard, why throw the ball out of the shotgun?
Odom's a decent recruiter, especially on offense, but his ability to make in-game adjustments, especially on defense during critical times will once again be his downfall.

I think Odums is “the” master in the SWAC at flipping quality recruits, but I agree with his coaching flaws. I have seen this man abandon something that is working for him in games several situations. He just seems like a coach that can only manage a game that is completely going his way from the opening kickoff. Just like Les Miles, the dog fights give him jitters.

You have the best recruits but a lackluster coach...which will produce a lackluster performance against a team with average players and good coaching.

My opinion of Odoms:

Recruiter: Good
Coach: Average (SWAC Standards)

To me Odoms prepares for Grambling and uses those schemes against each and every team before Grambling....yet when he plays Grambling he can't make adjustments because they have never practiced on adjustments.

This has been shown in EVERY game he has coached against Fobbs.

I have sat in the stands when we were losing at halftime laughing because our (fans) conversations were "We're a second half team anyway." What does that mean....our coaches make adjustments.

This is a very fair assessment.

As an SU Jag winning the Celebration Bowl is a successful season to me. Truth be told as for me I believe in Coach O. I believe his system works, I believe not having spring practice hurt our ball club in the long hall. Do I think Coach Fobbs is a better coach than Coach O? No!! I believe having Coach Dooley he benefited from for 4 years. This season coming up is going to tell me can Coach Fobbs really coach after Coach Dooley departure. Also my Jags was one stop away from beating Gram in 2017. Difference was Kincaid (Dooley) not Coach Fobbs.
The difference was special teams

I also agree with your assessment...
However, Odums and SU's fortune will rest upon Oliver's ability to get his defense to play on the same level as Gsu/Alcorn. Both Gsu and Alcorn play with great discipline and trust each other to do their job. Many times the SU defense is fooled into reacting to what they see instead of simply performing their assignments.. Gsu's defense has stood tall in every game over the past 3yrs including both Celebration Bowls..
When SU's defense achieve's that level of play, the Championships will follow...

Special Team kick-off which was a poor decision by Odums cost us the game last year

A 3rd down & 10 conversion was another poor choice by Odums cost us the game last year.

Transfers and Juco's had nothing to do with the outcome of the game. So the article is moot to me. Coaching and being a mastermind with your coaching skills, tells the tale for me.

Odums has always had the better talent than GSU,, hell than everybody in this conference for the last 7-8 years, If I'm wrong, give me 2 years where GSU or any SWAC school had better talent than SU, hell even last year, GSU had 2 players that were better, I'll give you that, but 2 players and still should have lost

SU has always jumped out early with the lead in these games, that let's you know that it has nothing to do with the transfers and Juco kids, we've always showed up early, the 1st 3 poss of these games, hell, you can say we've been up at Halftime in these games, since Odums has taken over.

Odums just has a problem with in-game decisions, he gets comfortable with things and think that game plan A will work throughout the game, when he has to be able to "mix" Game Plan B with Game Plan A, and even have a Game Plan C in the mix as well.

Odums, doesn't know how to adjust yet, and it's so obvious that anybody with a brain can tell what he's doing. Mixing your game plans, A, B, AND C, is what Pete would do against these sad ass coaches, keeping teams off balance.

Odums, IMO, is not there yet. Neither coach in this SWAC isn't, but Odums is the closet thing to maybe get there. I have my doubts with Fobbs coaching ability. Just my opinion don't get mad, if so, F you.

Odums had literally Austin last year and had the game in his hands, and still lost that sht, GSU had All-Americans 2 and still barely escaped with the W, Let that sit in water for 10 minutes before stirring.

Comes down to coaching IMO

These coaches aint playing a chess match games, they are just going out there and hoping things work.

This sht is a mental game now, everybody has talent, now it comes down to which coach will out-think the next coach through-out the game, thus Odums at time being out-matched by Alcorn and GSU.

If this article had any kind of legs, then how can we explain the Alcorn situation? Odums has beaten Alcorn 1 time.

Do Alcorn bring in transfers like GSU?

Do Alcorn bring in Juco players like GSU?

Yet Odums can't beat Alcorn, we are getting blasted by Alcorn, but yet we have the better talent, Alcorn doesn't have the talent that GSU has but yet they would kick our asses worse than how GSU would do us?

So the article is moot. We have a hard time with Alcorn than we do with GSU, truth be told.

So what is it? Again, it's about coaching, Alcorn coach is not a better coach than Odums, it's that, again, Odums can't make in-game adjustments, Alcorn, last year came out throwing the ball against us, that crap didn't work, we came out passing and moving the ball, Alcorn said f this, let's pound the ball, They peeled off 400 plus yards, 1 player, rack up 400 plus yards on us. Odums and staff had no answer for that sht. No in-game adjustments as I stated in my previous post about dude. We couldn't stop that crap for nothing in the world.

We continued on Offense doing our Plan A, we tried to go to Plan B, but it was so obvious that, any and everybody saw that crap coming, so before you know, we down, and now we gotta revert back to Plan A, which is now even tougher to execute because Alcorn and GSU plans heavily on Plan A.

So I said all to say this, Odums method is good, he gets the talent, but the dude has to level up on his coaching to beat GSU & Alcorn.

It's a reason we are picked 3rd and it's not because of our talent.

In fewer words, what Bighead is trying to say is that Odoms is dumb. When it comes to in-game adjustments, his name fit's his coaching IQ. Is that about right BH?
