Exact Amount GSU Received from Celebration Bowl

The conference gets 1 million dollars
Grambling got 700k
That’s 1.4 million over the last two years
That money isn’t added to athletics general budget, because it’s not an reoccurring source of funding.
The conference office held Grambling’s check from the 2016 Celebration Bowl until Homecoming 2017. That’s how the finances of the conference came to the light. Gallot demanded to see the books, after the procrastination of the conference office releasing Grambling’s payout.
The NCAA tournament payout doesn’t sorely belong to TSU. The conference receives points for tournament wins, and that money is divided among member institutions. That’s has always been the rule .

I think there is a difference. Texas Southern did not win the tournament. Also, this bowl game is between the winners of the SWAC/MEAC. If there was a basketball tournament with the winner of the SWAC/MEAC with a sponsor then that's different.

Yet, I thought that all teams that go to the basketball post season received some type of check.
Nope...no difference. A post season check is a post season check. And no, we have not received any post season money. There was a thread about this not long ago when Davis mentioned in an interview that we got no money for playing and advancing in the tournament.

I think you are overreacting just a tad. The article in question is about Grambling's payout from the 2016 Celebration Bowl, which is from the 2016-17 fiscal year. That is where all of this information is coming from regarding NCAA revenues. I believe you are talking about TSU's basketball money which is just from this past season. The fiscal year (for most schools) just ended last month. We will not know those numbers until this time next year.

If I am not mistaken our not getting NCAA money goes back 3 or 4 years. That means 2015 at the least.

Great thanks. Makes sense

The NCAA tournament money is on a six year rotating cycle, and the conference gets units from every year they participate in the tournament. If you win, your conference gets more units and each year a dollar amount is placed on the units. Every conference in the country divides the NCAA payout among their member institutions. The NCAA pays for the travel and lodging of the tournament participants. The NCAA nor the SWAC intended for the tournament payout money to only support the tournament participate. The SWAC presidents voted on the Celebration Bowl payout formula, the participant gets 70% and the other 30% is divided by the other 9 plus conference office.

Caveat: Basketball money goes to the general revenue. Proceeds are then distributed from the net profit.

I wonder if the chairman of the Council of Presidents and Chancellors ever demand to see the books..... (Dr. Andrew Hugine)

I never said it was only for the participant(s). I said we have not gotten a disbursement from the conference for our tournament appearances. I am also saying if Grambling did that is unfair.

This is very interesting! Money made somewhat and did not have to take a beat down to get it!

Very interesting, do you know this for a fact or is this speculation on your part?

He really does.

Same question guys. Are the two of you speculating he knows, acting by proxy for him or one or both of you know for a fact yourself?

I'm not being difficult, but if I or any alumnus from Texas Southern approaches Dr. Lane with that information we need to be factual with our statements.

Furthermore, money being witheld but all of sudden turned over at the mere request of seeing the books smells rotten on any day.

Often times some of us are in the know on certain aspects. This is true with all of us when it comes to our universities. There are things I may know that other may not...but I will say without a doubt he is in the know on athletic things.

Also, I did put out a “filler” per se with his information to some others and all of sudden information started coming out.

All I will say is that Rick Gallot was a great choice for GSU. Any other president would have been confused on what to do.

Which makes me wonder why our president wasn't sounding the alarm prior to this.

Maybe this is part of the reason Duer isn’t there anymore. More importantly when the presidents go in to executive session depending on the by laws of the conference they may be held to silence.

Personally I wouldn’t approach a president based on something on what I read on a message board regardless of the source.

I believe he was saying that the money that was supposed to be split between the member schools from the NCAA tournaments was never distributed to TSU. If TSU never received its share of that money then one could speculate that the SWAC has been holding on to that money for the past few years.

Under ordinary circumstances I get your point, but my Texas Southern hasn't received a red cent from those tournament appearances. The medium the information comes from is of no concern to me right now as long as the information is factual. That is why I've been seeking verification.

The medium was radio that provided the information that TSU was not receiving money from the tournament appearances. Should we have not sought verification and brushed it off as just radio punditry? If we had, we would have remained ignorant about the matter to this very day.

The medium (radio) should have done a FOIA request and not announce but distribute it via their website.

My understanding is that the Celebration bowl & BB Ball allocations are not set up the same. The Presidents utilized a different model for the Celebration bowl.

Dr. Cavil explained this in depth on one of his shows.

Perhaps they used all of the money to handle the conference's deficit.....
