Petition Wants 25 Percent of 'Black Panther' Profits Invested in Black Communities





On one hand, I'm like, "This is an unreasonable demand."

On the other, it doesn't seem too far-fetched (maybe not 25 percent), but something considering how so many people and groups were raising money to take kids to see the movie, and how folks were going on about how Black Panther was a victory for black people and would inspire individuals ... because we were finally being represented in this way.
 
I have a better idea; it's for all these people who went and saw the movie who are of voting age to go 1) VOTE in every election! Screw the bull even if doesn't line up with you 100% and if you have to take one for the team and vote in the interest of those less off than you. 2) If they can support Marvel for a Black movie, they need to find a Black business to support. Like supporting a political candidate, find one who will appreciate them. 3) If the focus is going to be Black communities with an emphasis on STEM programs, then consider supporting HBCU's that have those programs at least at a bachelor of science level, then crap like Hampton and the closures of other HBCUs wouldn't be happening.!!!

This is absolutely asinine. Trying to capitalize off someone else's hard work. If this is what they wanted they should have negotiated BEFORE the movie and/or invested in the production of the movie.

The historic success of this film has been largely driven by the support of black people -- many black people who aren't necessarily into Marvel movies or even possess a deep familiarity with the Black Panther comic itself. Marvel and Disney and everybody associated with the film is getting a grip off all the backing.

So many black people have adopted this movie as a uniquely black experience. Leading up to the film, there was a Twitter hashtag #whatblackpanthermeanstome. Someone posted an article on here where the writer compared Black Panther to the Obama presidency. Black people have invested a lot of money, energy and emotion into this film like we haven't seen with any other black-centered work.

The refrain by many who watched the film (I haven't seen it yet) is wanting black people to change the way they think of themselves and realize all the possibilities black people are capable of based on what was presented on screen.

I am one of those persons. I had not heard of Black Panther until the movie. I think the movie has many positive themes running through it pertaining to Black people and Africa/Africans but I see no reason they should be petitioned to give up their earnings that they worked for. I wish a mofo would come demanding I give a percentage of my companies profits because I am Black and I make some of my money from Black customers.

Welfare mentality personified!

So it's welfare mentality to explore the possibility of acquiring a return on the investment in an entity that was marketed to appeal to you?

It's no different than sports franchises giving back to the communities in which they reside.

Because at the end of the day, a lot of black people consider the success of Black Panther a win for the collective.

The important word is GIVE back to communities...not being petitioned. How are you going to pressure me to give money I invested and/or earned. If they choose to give them money...cool. But no one can demand they give anything and then specify 25%? Aw hell naw.

Hell yeah it is welfare mentality.

In this particular example, it's just not people buying the product. It's people buying the product and encouraging others to invest in it, too. And believing that the product has, or could have, a profound impact simply because it was created as a representation of you.

That happens in business. It is called WORD of MOUTH. Small businesses thrive on it.

All businesses rely on word of mouth to some extent to attract customers. But we're talking about an entity that has invested a lot of resources into marketing, promoting a product to a particular demographic where it has become historically successful because of it. I don't agree that 25 percent of the profits from Black Panther should be invested into black communities. I don't even think any money should.

But, I do think it is fair to ask what does was Marvel/Disney owe this audience in exchange for its extraordinary investment in this particular product.

It's kinda funny really. You had black folks pulling out dashiki's and kente cloth like this movie was really a benefit to anyone other than Disney. Guess people realize that other than just having a black cast it really didnt benefit us much now.

I disagree. It showed Black folk can portray something other than dope dealers...pimps/hoes...foul mouthed malcontents...hustlers...slaves or comedic buffoons and Black people will support the project.

Having said that, I am an action movie junkie so you figure a certain amount of profanity and other stuff comes with the territory but this movie proved it can be done and be entertaining with Black folk in leading rolls.
