Mississippi SWAC schools among smallest athletic budgets in Division 1

With state budget cuts this year and next year, I don't see foresee any increases in athletic budgets.

Mississippi’s SWAC schools have three of the 10 smallest athletic budgets in Division 1, according to a study released Thursday by USA Today.

The study found that among the 347 colleges and universities that compete in the NCAA’s top division, Jackson State ranked 337, Alcorn ranked 341 and Mississippi Valley State spent less than any other school in the country.

More troubling is the revelation that all three schools rank at or near the bottom in the Southwestern Athletic Conference in terms of both spending and revenue.

Records show Jackson State had the seventh-largest budget in the 10-team conference with a total operating budget of $7.6 million.

That’s nearly $1 million more than Alcorn State ($6.75 million), which ranked ninth in the league, and $3.3 million more than Mississippi Valley State ($4.29 million), which was last.

The fact that college athletics is not an even playing field or that historically black colleges face financial obstacles other schools don’t have to deal with shouldn’t surprise anyone. But the numbers reveal the lengths that Mississippi’s SWAC athletic directors must go to keep their department’s head above water.

Spoiler alert: It’s a lot harder than you think.

“To say that it’s not tough would be telling a tale,” Jackson State athletic director Wheeler Brown said. “We do what we can with what we have to work with. You have to look at things like scheduling regionally, look at stretching your uniform budget as far as you can. Just try to find creative ways to get things done.”

But Prairie View has a "high school little stadium" on its campus so naturally, JSU's budget is actually double ours.

Lets see... hmmmmmmmm.... we have a new "high school little stadium on campus"... and a new "high school little soccer STADIUM :D " and a new "high school little TRACK AND FIELD STADDDDDDIUM :D " and newer "high school little BASEBALL STADIUM" and revamped "high school SOFTBALL STADIUM'.... all either NEW or revamped separate STADIUMS, on campus. Spoiler alert: the baby dome is about to undergo rehabilitation soon as well :D .

Not bad for a "little high school university" like Prairie View, holder of the 3rd largest athletic budget in the SWAC and ever growing school. :)

PV will be a suburban college in about 10 years ... that population creep up along 290 is something else
 
We was whooping ass with that little budget for years so just imagine if we had a budget double that like TxSU, Pv & Bama St. Been this way for years so if anything they should have been running the SWAC a long time ago if we're being honest here. From the looks of it, we aren't the ones that should be ashamed lol.

I want the JSU folks to rationalize why their athl budget in that big ol' stadium they own is so.... large? They have the audacity to try and bemoan others, aka "hate on what they cannot have," while pulling up the rear. What gives? :(

No one ever hated what y'all have. We just said a stadium that small wouldn't pass in Jackson which is the God honest truth. Anything less than 25k won't go for our fan base and that's no smack at all. If you take that as smack then that's just on you.

This ain't 1985 no-caring about sports PV, Jay. Nothing but a PURE "L" is waiting for JSU inside Panther Stadium. The player named "History" or "used'ta" will not suit up for PV or JSU come September. However, one of the guys suiting up for PV will be that big 6'7" 272lb DE lol. :D

It's interesting that JSU brings up their fan base when conversations like this take place....to me it's comes across as an "alternative facts" situation given the financial issues JSU has faced over the last year.

Let me be real GSU is just as bad or worse than JSU.

Um....no. Sorry to tell you but your athletic budget normally increase over a period of time. This is probably the root cause of JSU decline in championships.

Fan base was for the stadium accusations and whatever from Bewild. You read way too much into that part lol. I was just saying what would suit our fan base in terms of a stadium being that small and what we would go for. You all have a 26k seat stadium correct? That'd be perfect for us at the least.

They don't see the venom they spew, Found. But who am I to speak because we were in the middle of that 80 game losing skid playing in that god awful horrible "stadium" on campus and I would get caught up in talking mad cash shit sometimes lol. That was pretty stupid of me and I'm sure I was doing nothing but entertaining everyone w/ that jibberish, kinda' sorta' like JSUers do currently lol. They thinking they shit don't stank and we're trying to convince them their shit stinks. :D

I don't disagree but the thing is, it has increased over a period of time which I think is what people keep missing lol. Which is why I said what I said about have a budget double what we have now. We'd probably be doing a lot more damage in the SWAC.
 
And these sad budgets are the reasons for the "money games". Its a tough situation for all the SWAC schools. And believe me the Ole Piss, Miss St and USM fans enjoyed seeing this.
The Clarion Ledger made it their business to make this their headline news story. Not sports story, but the damn headline news story. Smdh. And I damn sure don't believe it was to help raise no damn funds.

But at least USM and Miss St have scheduled money games with the in state SWAC schools in the past and have future dates set. Fugg Ole Piss on that ish.

I feel you on that....but at times you JSU folks provide the belief that you are the blueprint for higher education (academic/non academic) across the board.

Well if you look at everything across the board (academic/non academic) and compare everybody in the SWAC I'm pretty sure JSU would sit at the top of the list. Even with all we've been through recently, with our budget, facilities, basketball, football, baseball, etc. You just can't deny that and if you do you should take a closer look at things. This ain't to put no school down at all. Now as far as being the blueprint, that must be your point of view lol. We ain't perfect but we know where we stand with things.
