There are no "profits" in FCS (and most FBS) athletics. You either spend more or less than you planned/allocated.

Prairie View would go immediately broke trying to send non-rev teams to BCU/FAMU to compete annually. Not to mention the added danger potential of extended travel. PV BCU FAMU in a conf together? Financially and distance burdening. PV nicholls st, mcneese, nwst in a conf, financially & travel friendly/appealing.
Too bad the la-tx fcs schools singly cannot co-exist for their financial/travel friendly gains -regional rivalry.

Those travel costs are killing folks ... PV to Alabama State is damn near 700 miles while PV to Alabama A&M is about an 800-mile trip.
Out of the 11 football-playing members of the Southland (TAMU-Corpus Christi and New Orleans don't have football) and the 10 SWAC members ...
That's 14 schools located in Texas and Louisiana.
In Texas:
Abilene Christian
Houston Baptist
Incarnate Word (San Antonio)
Lamar (Beaumont)
Sam Houston State
SF Austin
Prairie View
Texas Southern
In Louisiana:
Southern
Grambling
McNeese
Nicholls
Northwestern State
Southeastern Louisiana
If you wanted to divide geographically, you'd get two 7-team divisions with the Louisiana schools and Lamar in one division and the other Texas schools in another.
Plus, bringing in TAMU-CC and UNO for basketball grows that league to 16 teams, putting TAMU-CC in the Texas division and UNO in the Louisiana & Lamar division.

Great idea. The only problem with this is that history has proven that anytime we attempt to cohabitat we get the short end of the stick.
Didn't wanna' address that big elephant in the room. It would be a cohabitation nightmare, imho. Economically/distance friendlier but a nightmare due to historical treatment/actions/distrust/et al.

Now @bluedog and @Bewildered I'm not for that scenario of linking up with SLC teams, especially when it means a decrease in our collective bottom lines with a decrease in our collective travel expenses. A lot of those other schools won't travel to SU/Grambling/PV/TSU while they'll potentially set attendance records on our backs.
If anything, we should pay attention to how the dominoes fall in the conferences that neighbor our footprint/have historical ties (SLC, OVC, MEAC). As the price of business increases, the conference should not be looking to bring in a Division 2 come-up unless that school has a solid plan in place for growth in D-1. The MEAC got burned once with Winston-Salem State, and potentially get burned a second time by Savannah State.
Remember, there is opportunity in chaos.

What sense did it make for them to go to the MEAC and travel to Delaware, Maryland, NC and VA on a yearly basis when they could have stayed in the SIAC and played teams way closer to them

I believe it is a thing called more exposure by moving up in athletics. Although they didn't technically move up in athletics, it's akin to TAMU leaving the Big 12 Conference for the SEC or West Virginia leaving the Big East Conference for the Big 12.

The MEACs last few football-playing additions were CIAA move-ups with Hampton, Norfolk State, NC Central and Winston-Salem (who moved back down)

Only thing SSU exposed to the world is getting beat 84-0 by OSU and having FSU use a running clock on them. Folks should know their limitations. If its not meant for you to be a big time athletic program, then do what you can to win at D2.
SSU has a smaller population than Clark, Fort Valley, Albany State and its just about the same as Morehouse and they didnt feel the need to move up.

True!!! It's called sustainability. They should have looked into the future with real numbers instead of imaginary numbers. The 'What If' with other people's money normally doesn't work out too well.

I think they got caught up in the meac trying to make a big splash by expanding and not being properly vetted.

True!!! The MEAC should have demanded a 5 to 10 year plan from them on how they would remain at the D-I level. It's similar to the GOP way of vetting their people, no resume' or regulator requirements.
