BREAKING: Savannah State athletics to drop to Division II





It was said that Savannah St. has only won 8 games since being in FCS in 2010. Those travel expenses is killing them in the MEAC.

They have had a total of 17 consecutive losing season well below .500. Including all six seasons in the meac.
 
"Unless a substantial influx of money comes into the SSU Athletic Department, the move will occur."

I wonder how "substantial" is substantial in terms of the amount of money that needs to be raised? A very...and I do mean very.... distant part of me thinks they will find a way to raise the money. The realistic part of me thinks this may be the first of a number of schools that will be making this announcement in the near future.

Especially with the stance taken in the state of carolina on cutting supporting athletics.
 
All those money games and still broke... money games are a waste of time. Sometimes SCState has 3 a year and they STILL ain't no better off than anyone else.

...also, Valley, this is your cue.
 
Of course Non-Sports Guy would bring up Valley because that's what trolls do.

Unless you are ASU, PV or TxSU, no one should be suggesting that anyone move down. Like we don't see the articles and stuff posted on here about budget issues and financial mismanagement

That doesn't have anything to do with the money games. If you aren't fiscally responsible that's on you not the banks who loan you the money.

Especially if a school is in a State that doesn't have a Piyush 'Bobby' Jindal type governor. If your school is the only school in the State with financial issues, that should be a clear indication that your school is not fiscally responsible.
 
The problem with a lot of HBCUs, their leaderships might have the academic background, but most have very little experience (real life experience) on how things are really done. I've experienced top level HBCUs administrators who couldn't balance their own checkbooks. Some of them still have yet to realize that once they write and issue a check, the amount on the check should be immediately deducted from their checking account balance, although the monies probably wouldn't get deducted from their checking account until a later date. When I was the KRS in my fraternity chapter, I would present two different columns for the chapter's checking account. One column to show what is reflected in the monthly bank statement and another column to show what is actually left in the checking account, with an explanation on the amount of outstanding checks. That was the only way I could get some of my so-called well educated brothers that the chapter no longer has the amount of money shown in the monthly bank statement. Most of the time it is less due to outstanding checks.

I remember someone posted from USA TODAY, the SWAC schools that actually made a profit, IF i remember correctly only 3 at most made profits. I know SU was one.. I think a lot of people forget. You can have new stadiums, arenas, that means NOTHING, if you not making $$$.

A lot of schools are getting caught up in the building arms race and coming up with a good bit of debt service.
 
The thing that kills most schools in the MEAC is that there travel expenses are through the roof. Also the reason the MEAC schools have bigger athletic budgets than SWAC schools is that they pass the burden on to their students. Norfolk St. charges their students $734 a semester for student athletic fees (SAF), that is almost $1500 a year per student. Virginia just passed a law recently that FCS schools in Virginia can't have their athletic budgets made by more than 70% of athletic fees. Norfolk St. and James Madison SAF make up 80% of their Athletic Budget. Savannah St. wasn't even successful in DII. They showed promise this year especially after they beat Bethune-Cookman. If Savannah St. can support their programs they will be alright.

True dat. It's across the board. There will be a new D-I and a new D-2 before it's all over with. The price of doing business has increased significantly in recent years
 
I am not surprised especially with the mergers across the state. Sure, they won conference championships in men's basketball (regular season), women's basketball (tournament), softball and baseball, but those championships did not bring in a boatload of money. Those money games in football and basketball will only bring in a certain amount of money as in not enough. It is not just the money made by the athletic department that is the issue but also the money obtained by the entire university.

With these mergers across the state, I wonder what other plans the state has and what will happen next. A state senator had plans for mergers of the HBCUs, but the HBCUs (Fort Valley, Albany State, and Savannah State) would dominate and stay open. Well, only Darton College merged into Albany State (link). (Darton College was originally Albany Junior College, starting in 1963.) There were no mergers with Fort Valley State or SSU.
