White Christians Outraged by Black Female Portrayal of God In Octavia Spencer’s Upcoming Film

Man who gives a fat rat flying what white "christians" (lowercase used on purpose) are out raged about. Be out raged about the kkk and Black children being murdered by "law enforcement" then we can talk be cause it is apparent Black folk and white folk do not worship the same God.

As quiet kept not a lot of us are going to see that film either because God is portrayed as a woman.

I remember one of my cousins leaving the church he had been at for a couple of decades after he found out the new preacher was a woman.

So true....

I know a pastor who took all the pictures of Jesus down in the church because he felt that it was a human depiction of how Jesus looked and no one can truly say this is how Jesus should look. There is a reason why there is no picture of Allah. Moreover, I think people seek out comfort in wanting to know that God looks like them.

A picture of Jesus can be estimated by a historical look at the original people from the geographic area Jesus came from...the issue is much larger. If Jesus is the Son of God and you depict Jesus with European features then it would stand to reason that God is white/European.

There are pictures of Mohammed. Allah (Arabic) is the equivalent of Yaweh (Hebrew) and there are no pictures of either.

To your first paragraph I understand that fully but it still leaves the depiction open.

Good points though....

I personally am one of those Christians who is tired of the battle between religions and various forms of practices....just simply tired. Not in the sense of not being a believer but more of that Christianity is above love and respect. Just treat people right. I am a avid reader as I am constantly in search of God and an understanding I have is simple...there is a Supreme Being and instead of me wasting time justifying which is better I simply just treat people right.

I think the Atlanta Black Star is reaching a bit here. A lot of Christians (regardless of color) have had an issue with "The Shack" for a while. In the book (which appears to be the same in the movie) God is depicted as a black woman named Papa. The Holy Spirit is depicted as an Asian woman. I remember when the book came out years ago, even in black churches people chalked this up to new age teachings as there is no where in the scripture saying that and/or alluding to the fact that God is a woman. More so folks were mad because the book continued new age/universalism talk that everyone goes to heaven. Again, I could be wrong but I think they are reaching here since The Shack has been a cause of debate among a lot of bible study groups for years. I remeber them vividly lol

Yea I read this before.
I had not read it before but just from my study and biblical geography and just reasoning my thoughts align with those in the article. I have asked the questions for years as to how Jesus, Joseph and Mary hid in Egypt from Herod without being detected. If the European pictorials are true they would have stood out like a sore thumb.

I think (and have thought for a long long time) that using European translations of Hebrew/Aramaic/Greek names is part of the problem in understanding and realizing that Jesus was not white/European. I understand that this is done by design but we need to resist this whenever possible.

Mary is NOT a Christian name. It is a European name....of course I am preaching to the choir in here.

I would never be a member of a church with a female pastor as the head. It's not her place to lead.

I agree with Cee Dog.

That's one of the main problems of churches today. Too many people willing to accept anything going on in the church. Some things are simply out of order and some people have to be strong enough to take a stand.

Of course, because a book written by men (that glorifies a male deity) which has been used to justify the oppression of women -- not only in a religious sense but in society as a whole -- would lead men to believe that is true.
