Fall 2k16 Numbers Prediction

That's a great formula for SU and the rest of the step 2 bands and all but that's not the only style of drilling. FAMU just tended to be a horrible example of what to do with numbers. I grew up around corps bands as much as show style and 200 plus on the field was nothing. Give me that big rich sound over a band screeching to attain the same volume any day.

What's funny to me though is how numbers are talked about amongst our bands every year. It's like a tradition. But this year I keep seeing these downplaying comments like somebody didn't get what they were expecting. Maybe it's that Dega 450 rumor *shrugs*. Numbers are what they are and not inherently good or bad. It's whether you know what to do with the numbers you have that makes the difference.

Most of the time people are not counting and just throw out numbers.

PV is not 300.

Nobody (but the directors) knows what PV's size is or will be for sure because nobody has seen the whole band perform yet. What you see in those clips is basically the freshman class, section leaders and not enough upperclassmen to even make a band. Hell I saw one percussion section with no old heads lol. In other words almost the entire band from last year is missing.

I'm hearing the university is having some issues with a record freshmen enrollment. If you see the audience filling the dome in one of those clips that's PVU's incoming freshman class. Hopefully things will work out for everybody. If not maybe that's what they'll roll with and they are sounding dayum good with it. But the 300 that keeps floating around is not based on counting from those performances.

A lot of people got cut & we used a lot of money on instruments and other things for the band. Any more questions?

No smack intended....but where did the students who got cut go? did they transfer to other hbcu band programs or give up band to just remain a normal student?

Some still at JSU, some left the school, some I don't know and don't care tbh lol.

I can understand that lol....I wouldn't be surprised if some went to Talladega...."the hbcu band graveyard for old band heads who still want to march and transfers"

size doesn't really matter ...for the past 3 years A&M has shown that with the band's new director...no horn holders just a clear dynamic sound
.

Maybe they might March 300 for Macy's but from what's seen they're 190-200 at best. If what your saying is true that's fine. I did say band camp tends to change sizes , but I actually had them well over 200 , but from previous years when the band performed at pv that's been very close to what we see on game day.

but im only goin by what we saw... im pretty sure u seen the clips of alcorn

Clip ? I did say Alcorn could make a late surge in numbers due to the first annual band camp recruitment, but as of late July y'all had 125-150 coming in... Those cuts seemed to effect everyone. But we're waiting on said clip my friend all I want is accuracy to get fans pumped for band season. I stated that early to correct me of any changes as things change in a flash I.e. Jsu.

In previous years PV hasn't had 3500 incoming freshmen to house either.

I'm not sure some of you can read. Not sure why some of you are so adamant about it either. But what you CAN see in these clips are a bunch of white shirts. Those are freshmen. The gray and purple shirts are upperclassmen. In the wide shot you almost can't even see the gray shirts yet the band looks about the same size if not a little bigger than last year. So you're left with only two options. Either the entire band from last year failed to return (we all know that's highly unlikely) or the upperclassmen are experiencing housing issues (I understand this is happening university wide) and were not present at the performances. So yes there are probably 250 to 300 or more members there. They've been seen at practice It's just a matter of whether things get worked out or not. If not then like I said I guess this will be the band they roll with which is fine with me. I'm more concerned with whether those 150 or so upperclassmen along with other students across the campus are able to stay in school or not.

Actually let me correct that. If this is the band you see on game day I'm not fine with that. It means a lot of students didn't get to continue college this semester.

Why do folks think bigger is better? LMAO. Hell I would never march more than 192 on the field if I was a band director. 6 company fronts of 32 each is all you need to do any type of drill. If you recruit with specific numbers for each section to maintain balance. You will be fine. All this 250-300 is crazy. Especially in these times when HBCUs are struggling with funds. Actually if you keep numbers in check. You make it more competitive and make for a better band if you ask me.

192 at halftime. 225 in the stands at max. That gives you a whole extra company front or line of reserves in case you have folks quit or have to zip. LOL.

As Doc Greggs would always tell us. You don't need many to do plenty. I would put the 128 on the field all- male bands I marched in at SU against any of these 200-300 member bands. Hell we did. TxSU and FAMU were huge bands in the 80s. LOL.
I would rather march with 128 that sound great and drill great. The infatuation with numbers leads to too many horn holders.

Okay, the situation at Jackson State seems fuzzy.

All of those students? When were they notified of the cuts? Why are people just hearing about this now??? Why would a student transfer to the likes of TC from Jackson State because they can't march with the Boom? I'm also noticing a bit of tension on this subject which tells me something is not adding up behind the scenes.

What's fuzzy? Lol. They were notified before band camp so they knew not to come back. No one said they transferred to TC.The guy from AAMU said he wouldn't be surprised if they did transfer because of all this talk about them being 450 or whatever.

The reason people are just hearing about this is because it's inhouse business and has nothing to do with no other school outside of JSU. I'm sure y'all have stuff at SU going on no one else needs to know about so you should understand that much.

Also, there is no tension lol. Let's not try to make something out of nothing here. We're fine, yall the ones worried about us and what happened lol.

yeah I didn't say they did transfer to TC..just that it wouldn't shock me if some did....or maybe to other hbcu band programs

Who is yall? Don't confuse me with being worried about jsu cause I asked where did the students who got cut go...I would ask that of any hbcu band program that sees a drastic cut like that...

at the end of day I see young black kids not being able to fulfill their desire of marching in a hbcu program because of budget cuts...

Well apparently some people can't read or choose to see what they want lol. I honestly wouldn't be surprised either being they get every other SWAC reject.
