"I would like my son to play for a coach that's going to teach him next-level stuff," O'Neal said on Monday's edition of "The Big Podcast With Shaq." "I have three in mind: Johnny Jones, LSU, because I know him personally, Calipari and the coach from Michigan State ... Tom Izzo. I've told my son many times, it's your decision and it is [his] decision. ... I need somebody that's gonna curse him out, treat him like a man. Those three guys are the ones I would like him to play for."

Teach him next level stuff????? That should exclude Johnny Jones and Calipari. It's easy for Calipari to bank off the success of his players in the NBA, but those 1-year players were going to be successful no matter where they went.

So you think Calipari isn't a teacher because he gets great talent year in year out?

Calipari isn't the only coach sending 1-and-dones to the league. But his guys are balling and he makes sure they get the right exposure and advice.
 
Of course he will prop lsu since he went there but no way he means that

If a blind man could recruit a top 5 guy he will still go pro...as average as some of the freshmen were this year they draft on potential now

Cal hasn't really coached since Memphis and UMASS and even then Memphis was a top program ..they come ready made at Kentucky

UAB went 26-7 and 16-2 in conference this year...won conference last year and made it to 3rd round of NCAAs... Nobody there is missing him... Trust me. They just lost their coach to Stanford...

My bad....I meant he has been kicking AAMU butt since he has been in the SWAC.
 
Why do 'we' always feel the need to speak up for PWIs? Or are you upset that the Alabama native came to H-town instead or Normal/Huntsville?

Yeap, when he doesn't have a clear talent advantage against teams, it shows big time. He's does a good job of managing the player egos, getting all the talent to Kentucky, and possibly having connections in the league that can properly advise the players on their draft worthiness, but teaching fundamentals and developing players, no.

I'm looking at it from a player development standpoint. If Shaq's son isn't a ready-made NBA star his freshman year, he might want to avoid LSU and Kentucky. That's all I'm saying. Well, Johnny Jones probably will be long gone by the time his son is in college anyway. lol

How do you "develop" kids who stay on the squad for four months?

Sometimes a coach is just in a bad situation. He will do well at Tech. Hewitt was a great recruiter but not an X and O guy. Signing all of those "one and done" guys did him in. Gregory was not a good recruiter (and you must have the talent in the ACC) but a good X and O guy. The coach we have now is a noted recruiter. If he can bring in some talent willing to stay 2-3 years, we will have our program back.

You don't. You just do the things to make sure they stay out of trouble long enough to get what you want and then let them go ruin NBA teams.

Like you said it's only 4 months and in Cal's case he has to replace them as fast as he can because other teams who aren't suffering from that get better.
