Well any city only gets so much based on sales taxes and permits. If the MCC generates a particular economic impact (I've seen the number reported at $25M or so), the vast majority of that impact is received by the businesses, not the city itself. The city just gets the sales taxes off the sales, plus the amount of any permits they required. So basically the city itself may see $1-2M at most.
 
I am not upset with UAB getting money, basically its just a small part of what they generate - UAB is the largest employer for not only the city of Birmingham but for the state of Alabama. But our complaint is the City continues to brag on a $30 million dollar impact from this particular event, the single largest event for the City and both Universities are getting scraps. This year is the 75th MCC - the 76th is in peril.

It is the City that receives all funds from Tailgate, the city has now started to sponsor concerts and other money making events during this week so the City is getting way more than just the taxes and your tax estimate would be woefully undervalued.
 
Basically, the City has become a half million dollar donor to UAB's football program for the next 5 years. Is this the first or are there other cities that donate taxpayers monies to its local college athletic programs?
 
Why would these two universities push to make $500,000 every other year when they get $500,000 every year. The MCC Is definitely a true classic. People are attached to the atmosphere more than anything else and it's the atmosphere that has been developed buy this classic. MCC will be in Birmingham for many many more years to come

Name one established classic on the level of the mcc that has dissolved to go home and home and list is it successful as a result?
 
it would never go to both schools the cities can't handle all the people who come to this game

and let me not forget the people who don't even go to the game! they come to see old friends and go to all the events & parties that weekend

Ummm how many classics are there that have averaged 65k besides the MCC? Only classics I can think of would be the Bayou Classic and Florida Classic but both of those are still going on. So apparently there's never been an established classic on the MCC level to dissolve which doesn't mean that if it did that it wouldn't be successful.

That is where everyone get's caught up. Those people that don't come to the game, the events and the parties - the schools make zero dollars from that - and the first number in the check that the 2 Universities get is "2" - we are getting raped. If the game were to go home and home, there wont be the huge number of folks via tailgating for a week etc. The schools could actually "profit" more with less if that makes sense. The promoters - The Bruno's Event Team - control tickets - the city charges $150 for tailgate - they are buying up property around Legion Field to expand the tailgate area just for the 75th MCC this year, the list of parties that was posted did not include The Mayor's Magic City Soiree' which is put on by the City, the City Council now has their own separate event/parties....I am not mad at anyone making a dollar - all WE are saying is the impact that is provided via the 2 institutions is not equitable. These schools are getting less than 300k each. There is something very wrong. Both schools can do tailgating at their own locations, with crowds in excess of 25k on campus and make more profit than what is being doled out by coming to Bham - and I am a Birmingham resident so I definitely would hate to see the game leave - but I am not going to support myASU to continue to be underpaid for this.
 



Again...will you charge your students? Increase security, Which mean more costs and gameday crew?

When the weather is bad for the mcc people show....first time it rains in Huntsville and 3k show folks will go crazy
 
you do have a point with that tbf..last year's mcc showed that a heavy storm won't hinder mcc attendance.in bham

I've never seen anything like it. .the crowd just pulled out their ponchos until a heavy down pour ensued and it became unbearable...

Close to 65k African Americans in the rain...I'm just glad cameras were there to document this because if I told someone it actually happened they wouldn't believe it.

IMO I just don't think huntsville or surrounding towns are ready... we don't have enough hotels to handle the influx
 
If I'm understanding correctly, what AAMU and AlaSU are bringing to the city (tourist type $$$ and economic impact) will be funneled back to UAB, correct? Can AAMUers and AlaSUers clarify?

what you just said could be the case but we need all the numbers

we may need to demand more $$$" from UAB if they want to play us in bham..I see that game doing well in 2017 Both sides were almost full except the end zones they block off every game.

It just seems like the money UAB is paying us to play them is returned back to them through all the money we make the city for the MCC

Can the two schools put together a competitive bid package to see if the City of Atlanta would be interested in hosting the game? I guess the other cities would be New Orleans and Nashville if Atlanta is not available. Make the City of Birmingham respect y'all. I still remembered when the City of Houston tried to steal the Bayou Classic from New Orleans.
