APR Announced, Including Penalties

Sooooo who will Tony Clayton and the Fools fire this time,, Dr. B just laughing his ass off. He tried to get rid of the MESS( incompetent people) in the athletic department and look what happen to him, I love SU, but don't feel sorry anymore HONESTLY,

I hope the new Governor doesn't re-appoint TC when his term expires.

Okay...I'm not really saavy when it comes to APR and things of that nature. But what is actually being done so that our schools succeed? From the vibe of this post, HBCUs have a bad rep for falling short of this APR. It seems like not enough is being done.
What's happening is a lot of these non hbcus schools are just passing there athletes. It's automatically understood. Most of the people on the NCAA graduated from these schools within conferences that have no apr problem. Name a few hbcu grads working with the NCAA apr department. So yea the apr situation is slightly rigged but our student athletes must also get there work done. They are a student before an athlete so without football they would still need those grades to add up.

SU has the least subsidized HBCU athletic program but is banned the most out of all DI programs including the SEVERAL HUNDRED DI programs that subsidize their athletics anywhere between 75% to 92% with PUBLIC FUNDS. It seems like the NCAA is barking up the wrong tree when it comes to schools using PUBLIC FUNDS for athletics instead of academics. At least SU academic programs are still rising in a state going through a serious budget crisis.

I guess the NCAA just turns a blind eye to this shit. Look how much these DI schools subsidize their athletics.

Get out of here with this bullshyt......

Where a school spends it's funding has nothing to do with APR. You just trying to divert and make more excuses on why your school can't get their act together.

I really see that having a good compliance department does wonders. C-Leb was right in that someone in our Athletic Department should have been advising Riley about the effects that him turning the roster over every year would do to us. It is going to take another 3 years for our BB team to recover from this mess Riley left us with. He could recruit his behind off but would have basically a brand new team every year for players he have ran off. He would have about 10-11 new players on the team every year he was there. Our new AD saw this and knew Riley was going to have us in APR trouble. That is one of the reasons why his contract wasn't renewed. The new coach had players that Riley kicked off the team back on the team. I think that all coaches that coach in DI for the first time needs to have classes on DI rules, eligibility, APR requirements.

Whatever man!!! I hope your new roof is staying dry. There are schools who have been caught red-handed in cheating by giving student athletes-grades. I don't see the NCAA eyeballing or PENALIZING them to see if all their student athletes (past and present) HONESTLY made their grades. And just recently, one of those schools (UNC) had a basketball team to play in the NCAA Finals. As always, White folks can find any Ole Chicken George type Black person to help them explain/defend their unexplainable biases. The list I saw had mostly SWAC and MEAC schools.

What do expenses have to do with using PUBLIC FUNDS to fund a school's athletic program??? If their expenses are that high, they need to find ways to cut their athletic budget. My point is, schools are there to educate people, not to fund some athletic programs and the NCAA seems to be more concerned about schools that spend less on athletics than those that rob their academic programs to maintain some athletic program.

By the way, SU subsidies are less than most Southland schools except two, UNO and NIcholls State. UNO doesn't have a football program and Nicholls State has probably the smallest school budget of all schools in Louisiana, which is why they attacked Grambling when the state was about to cut the budget for higher education. Like I previously stated, I hate that the athletic program has to go through this, but as long as SU's academic programs continue to shine while other Louisiana schools are trying to manage through what SU has already experienced. Subsidies for Northwestern State, Southeastern, and McNeese State were higher than SU's subsidies. Also, only two Southland schools (McNeese State and UNO) had a lower percent subsidy than SU. IMO, LSU should have forced ULM, McNeese,State, Nicholls State, and UNO to stay in the LSU System. Now Louisiana has a bunch of small independent schools in the UL System wanting more money.

Similar to how you asked "what do expenses...?" I'd ask the same question, how does subsidies have anything to do with an APR? My point with expenses is other universities are spending there money in other ways in the same state and not having the same issues.

And of course, the NCAA is concerned with schools maintaining athletic programs even at the expense of academic programs as they are an ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION (I know the NCAA wouldn't exist without academics but the reality is that athletics is what keeps them around).

Are those 2014-15? What I saw on USA today has 2014-15 numbers and it shows SU has a 70% subsidy. And all the Southland Louisiana schools have less subsidies than SU.

You play with the cards you are given. Its up to you to put down the right card when playing - it seems y'all need a lesson on how to spend what you do have. Why would the NCAA give SU a break when Louisiana Southland schools aren't having the same issues and they get less subsidies than SU and the revenues are less as SU had the highest revenue in Louisiana of the SWAC and Southland Universities.

Once again.

I guess you didn't see Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. And read my post above to Fiyah. It explains why some Black folks like yourself think that the NCAA is fair in issuing penalties But it is cool because there have always been Black folks who think that White folks can do no wrong.

It's strange how this school didn't make the list where approximately 3,100 student-athletes were probably given grades over a span of 18-years, but I'm sure some Chicken George Black person on here has an explanation for why they didn't:

North Carolina academic scandal will end quietly, just like everyone wanted

IMO, the NCAA has no credibility.

What does any of that have to do with any of this,, SU is in this situation because of incompetent people, and SU continuing to be oblivious,, BUT YET YOU GUYS ARE TALKING ABOUT BS,, that has nothing to do with SU PROBLEMS,, CLEAN OUR HOUSE BEFORE WE TALK ABOUT OTHER ISSUES. .

You are right, but don't you find it odd that schools like UNC never make the list for being penalized??? UNC have had ex-student-athletes and professors to come out and say that grades were illegally given to student-athletes. But that is none of my business when them same BLACK student-athletes are given preferential treatment over BLACK students who honestly made their grades. Another reason why BLACK communities suffer due to the incompetent people they receive from others. LSU's Rudy Macklin became the executive director of the Louisiana Bureau of Minority Health Access and Promotions and the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. And probably the best example of this, SU hired LSU's incompetent Greg LaFleur as the AD.

Hold up ... if these institutions are so strapped for cash, wouldn't it be in their best interest to hire competent people to maximize those expenditures?

LMAO!! I have said on this board that we as HBCUs can't do what the Bigger schools do. You all are so quick to compare yourselves to FBS Schools that you fail to realize that the only people that give a damn about HBCU Sports are the people on this board.

When it comes to APR, why do we the SWAC need Super-Talented athletes when we are the only ones who watch our sports products on a regular basis? FBS schools only care about the Bands. We just need to recruit kids who are academically sound with a little bit of athletic talent and keep it moving.

4 year Scholarships also means that the type of student you recruit will be felt in the long run if they are a success or failure. It sorta reminds me of the Open Admissions vs. Closed Admissions debate we had once in be other forum.

Most definitely!!! That's why Louisiana elected a COMPETENT governor this time.

Now, the Presidents and the conference should shoulder some, not all of the blame. Should have been proactive and started pooling resources to help schools get right on APR when the NCAA was planning to introduce it.

Rising tides. Boats. That kind of thing.

And I guess you didn't see where I said Southland Louisiana schools so A&M CC had nothing to do with my comment. And now you are assuming and making things personal because of your flawed reasoning with bringing subsidies into the conversation.

It has always been said that Black folks have to work TWICE as hard to accomplish the same goals as Whites. Somewhere that message got lost in translation when it comes to HBCU sports.

What this SU Debacle also means is that we as HBCUs must be more careful of who we hire. We flip our noses up at our own Graduates in favor of FBS Products who we "think" are better.

Ok Question:

Remember my HBCU Scale where I had TN State at the Top and Howard/Savannah State at the bottom?

Here we Go: Are the Same Issues plaguing SU when it comes to APR also plaguing Howard and Savannah State?

What's flawed about pointing out the wrong-doings of schools like UNC??? And it's not personal. It's pointing out how the NCAA has been hawkish on certain schools (SWAC and MEAC) while other schools just do whatever they want. The NCAA are similar to law enforcement in this country when it comes to profiling certain entities.

Yes, Howard University is ineligible too.

Howard University
Football, men’s swimming and diving, women’s lacrosse, softball

Savannah State University
Men’s basketball, football

The same issue: you mean gross incompetence from past years coming back to haunt us.

Remember, the APR calculates the last four years. Two of Southern's last four years were part of the thrown-out "unusable data" that the NCAA was asking for and LaFleur told the board everything was OK. APR is like your credit report. You may be good now, but had a charge-off and a repossession a couple of years ago weighing your score down.

That's what Southern is going through now. They have said the NCAA came through and showed them how they want their data during the "unusable data" saga. We all have to wait until this time next year to see if the school learned its lesson.

But are the issues the same at Howard/Savannah State as they are at SU? Or from a SWAC/MEAC Standpoint, is it something more deeper and sinister.
