What's the difference between Uber and a Taxi Cab?

What's the difference between Uber and a Taxi Cab? Everyone seems to happy Uber came to Huntsville. I hear all my friends in Cali, Chi-town and Atl talk about how they catch Uber. I'm trying to figure out is it just a new fad or better than a taxi or something?

From a rider standpoint, Uber is cheaper and at this point, probably most readily available no matter where you live.

From a business standpoint, you would be better off owning a taxi than driving for Uber because you would have to drive a lot of miles just to make above minimum wage (got a couple of chapter frats who do it as a side job) and you will put a lot of miles on your car.

That's just it, Uber is not paying for the wear and tear on personal owned vehicles. There's a reason why government mileage rates are always a little higher than gas prices.

Yellow Taxi in New York is getting killed by Uber, Lyft, etc. The rates are cheaper and you don't have to worry about flaggin' down a cab if you happen to be in Manhattan, DC, or Philly. Trust me. It's hard for a black man to catch a cab lol

That's why I wouldn't do it unless I had another car. No way i would use a new car for Uber

Now I do understand the taxi cab drivers complaints that Uber does not have the rules they have which makes their operating costs higher, I just don't feel sympathy.

Once I got hip to uber i'll never get in another cab. Also, Lyft is just as good. They don't get the hype that uber does but their service is great also.

and cheaper too as Uber is surge pricing all the dayum time depending on where you live.

Honestly in DC, Uber isn't really cheaper than a taxi as it hardly ever regular pricing. mid-day perhaps but night time Uber rides seem to always be surge pricing

Seems to be cheaper from what I've heard. I had family here visiting last year and they used UBER their whole time here. They said it is cheaper than cabs. My barber was talking about how she used UBER while in Miami last month. She used UBER for the high end cars that are like $100 and up. She was talking about how her driver had a high end car and used the money to pay his car payments and have extra cash. That is his weekend job.

Man, that is the truth. Try catching a cab in Harlem. The cab drivers fly past you, even the black drivers do.

You see all kinds of Uber cars here. One dude I work with did the Uber X thing and got picked up in a brand new G wagon lol. I've seen a Model S Uber too.

My homegirl showed me her uber paystub..... she made 1400 in one WEEKEND in Atlanta. She says she just drives around the airport and waits for it to come through.

This is what I've heard LOL. I've never been to New York, but I used to hear all the commotion about it. I had a friend who moved there from MS, and he said the racism he's experienced trying to hail a cab in NY is worse than anything he ever experienced his whole life in MS.

In DC a few years ago, there was a report on the news about black men having issues catching a cab. The news reporter confronted the cab drivers. I don't know if it really changed anything though.

These are some of the comments from the youtube video smh.

Some one who drives a cab for a living is in no position to judge anyone else about anything. Also, you would think most of these Middle Eastern and African cab drivers would know how it feels to be judged on your looks and not want to do the same thing to other people. Well if these cab drivers really feel they are entitled to act "selective" when it comes to who they give and refuse service to (despite how illegal that is) I can't wait to see how they feel when Donald Trump becomes president and he starts acting real selective about letting people who look like them in the country .

It's fucking ridiculous that nearly all of these comments are saying how black people are the one's who will rob and steal from cab drivers. That's literally racist, you are putting tags and stereotypes onto people for a being of a certain ethnicity. I live in Australia, and I know plenty of people who jump cabs and be dicks: the majority of them are white. Does this mean white people are more likely to rob the cab drivers? No. It just means dodgy people are. To say blacks are 'more likely' and that it's 'just a fact' is fucking retarded and you should re-evaluate yourselves. I bet you're all the kind of people who say 'I'm not a racist, but...'

How can you blame taxi drivers for not picking up blacks? They are the demographic most likely to not pay and not tip. New York is a big city, its understandable why a taxi driver would pass someone who is a risk not to pay for someone well dressed who likely will pay AND TIP. Not to mention factors such as you're 10 times more likely to be robbed by a black than a white. Its not racist if its true so shut up. They should collectively fix their broken race if they want to be treated like everyone else.

+Seven Psyche Cross reference it. There is a wealth of information on a search engine called "Google".

The comments on this video are so discouraging. Clearly we have a long way to go in this country. I know from personal experience that this is a real phenomenon. I was once stranded in DC with my then boyfriend because we missed the last train. We tried in vain to hail a cab for the longest time, so long that a white guy who had been watching us felt sorry for us. He stepped out to hail a cab for us and the very next cab stopped and he handed the cab over to us. The cab driver was pissed because he had been duped into stopping. He was extremely rude to us and pretended not to know the way to the train station in MD where my car was parked. We were exhausted and weren't about to give up the cab so we muddled our way through directing the cab driver to the train station. I'm sure a white passenger wouldn't have received the horrible service we received. Despite the terrible treatment we tipped the cab driver partly because I wanted to defy the stereotype of black people not tipping. But I shouldn't have to go through that just because I'm black.

+Kendra Hill Wright The average african american has an IQ of 85 thats near borderline retardation. Blacks are considered to be around 3000% more likely to commit murders or crime than their white counterparts that figure Im basing that on the population of blacks in prison in direct proportion of blacks living in the usa.

I'm guatemalan and lived in DC for a year and a half...I never had a problem getting a cab, but if the cab drivers are discriminating against people because of the color of their skin that is wrong and I'm glad they are being exposed

Cabbies in NYC are paying the price for years of racism and price gouging consumers.

To be fair, I have been profiled and refused service by an uber driver. I filed a complaint but they got last laugh as they gave me a low rating and hurt my stars.

How can and why would they refuse service? It's not like they depend on tips or anything, am I right?
