Jackson wants a Capital City Classic

If they really want it to back in Jackson then they need to make an offer that neither school can refuse ($$$) instead of passing useless resolutions.

The Jackson City Council says the annual rivalry football game between Jackson State University and Alcorn State University should be in Jackson permanently.

The council recently passed a resolution supporting Jackson as the permanent home of the game, which was once dubbed the "Capital City Classic."

The game was played in Jackson from 1993 to 2011. Alcorn State exercised its right to host the game in Lorman in 2012, after Jay Hopson became head football coach.

The contest now alternates between the two cities and is referred to by some as the Soul Bowl. The game was in Jackson this year.

In 2010 and 2011, the last two seasons of the Capital City Classic, the game drew 43,000 and 31,500 fans, respectively, according to the Jackson Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The economic impact for Jackson, which includes taxes anticipated or received from hotels and restaurants, was $3,491,600 in 2010 and $2.6 million in 2011. The bureau estimates that 30 percent of the people who came to a game stayed overnight in hotels.

I know that Alcorn wants it down there, but it doesn't generate money like in Jackson. (Where are the hotels, restaurants, and attractions in Alcorn?) Its better here in Jackson because it generates more publicity.

Don't you folks know nothin' about negotiations? You use what you earned in Lorman and tell Jackson to double (or so) that amount. Then, see what they will offer It doesn't mean you have to take the offer.

GTFOH......Numbers dont lie...all the reason the new administration said hell nah and Alcorn has nearly doubled what they got from playing in Jackson. You can have your classic. It just won't be with Alcorn. Start looking.

What you are saying is so true, but we all know that they are not about to offer that type of money up front to Alcorn. We are talking about doubling want Alcorn made at home which includes parking, concessions and ticket sales. No way they going to do that.

This is a repeat article from 4 years ago. No sense in y'all going back and forth or getting your feathers ruffled over opinions.

If we (JSU / Alcorn) keep the home & home going (which we will) then you'll see the same article pop up in another 3-4 years.

Mane...you don't have to accept it. You just won a SCG, the team is hot, so you go to Jackson and lay out all this money you say Alcorn is making and say "double this and we might think about it." You won't have a strong negotiating position if y'all got a 0-12 (or whatever) record and say this.

Alcorn moved the game back to Lorman because they weren't being given their fair cut in the City of Jackson. Also, it was always like being at a JSU home game. IMO, If the City of Jackson wants this game permanently in Jackson as a classic game, it needs to up the pot for Alcorn and make Memorial Stadium more of an neutral site, such as paint the field so that both school's logo and brand are visibly seen, such as what New Orleans does for the Bayou Classic every year. It's completely unfair that Alcorn is made the visiting team every year in what is branded as a classic game.

Totally agree!!!

It generates enough for Alcorn. That's all that matters.

I agree with that and every year the schools could switch sides like in 2010

Keep it as it is. Alcorn has put on a tremendous display when it's their turn to host the game. The atmosphere is great and nothing like scalping those Braves on the reservation...lol. What JSU's administration need to do is find a good opponent to play yearly once the 7 game mandate starts.

That's my point. Alcorn got screwed, according to you, because they didn't have as much to bargain with. JSU used their bargaining power to their advantage.

IMO, a good classic rivalry is when two teams from the same state and in the same conference play each at a neutral site, such as the Bayou Classic, the Florida Classic, and the Magic City Classic. Those game have two things to play for, which are the best in the conference and the best in the state. Maybe Mississippi can build a 65k to 70k stadium somewhere near Biloxi, MS and establish a few in-state conference rivalries. The only problem with that, there are only two conferences (SWAC and SEC) in the State of Mississippi that have two or more teams in the same conference. There are four ways to establish in-state conference rivalries in the State of Mississippi, which are JSU/Alcorn, JSU/MSVU, Alcorn/MSVU, and Ole Miss/Miss State. I'm sure the State of Mississippi might be able to convince either Ole Miss or Miss State or both to play USM as an in-state rivalry at some neutral site. I'm sure if the State of Mississippi could get its FBS and FCS in-state schools to agree to this, they might be able to justify a reason to build a 65k to 70k stadium somewhere along the Mississippi Gulf Coast and it would also help the casinos and tourist industry in that area. I do believe that the State of Mississippi and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Tourist Industry could come up with some deal that could work.
