JCSU coach investigated for not feeding players

Johnson C. Smith head football coach Kermit Blount is being investigated for not feeding a group of his players who showed up late to a team breakfast.

Sources said up to 20 players and several athletic trainers on the Division II program were denied a pre-game breakfast at it's hotel prior to the 1 p.m. kickoff.

The team was on the road against Virginia Union University on Saturday, Sept. 26. Sources said the coach's reasoning was because players were roughly five-minutes late to the 8:30 a.m. breakfast.

Reasons for being late varied from player-to-player.

Sources add some players had not eaten since dinner was served at 6 p.m. on Friday and were not served a full meal until 5 p.m., Saturday. We're told granola bars and oranges were, however, handed out during halftime.

After being told to leave the room where breakfast was being served, a handful of players walked a half mile down the street for fast food -- but a number of players said they did not have money to eat and consistently rely on meals provided by the University during road trips, according to sources.

One of the athletic trainers denied a meal is six-months pregnant.

"That speaks for itself," J.C.S.U. kicker Erik Amaya said. "Not getting food....that's the essence of getting through the day."

Johnson C. Smith lost the game 33-3.

"I can go back and say it was because we didn't have any food in our system," Amaya said.

University officials are investigating.

"The University takes very seriously the health and well-being of out student athletes," Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing Emiene Wright said. "The Athletics Department is currently investigating these allegations to determine what happened and is taking steps to ensure proper procedure is understood and followed."

The 57-year-old Blount is in his first season as head coach at J.C.S.U. He previously coached at Delaware State and Winston-Salem State.

He should've waited til they got back on campus or benched them for a certain amount of time during the game.

Welcome to Walmart needs to be his new job. Anger and attitude does not work with this new generation. If you can't handle it move on.

He should be fired.

You chew out your staff for not setting an example and you make the players pay for it in practice. The pregnant trainer gets a complete pass. Hell ain't no telling what could be happening to her.

I live by a belief to be early is to be on-time.

I agree with Coach Blount. I bet they have their azzez on time next time. Ya'll acting like these time out kids...

Just stop trying to be different and use common damn sense for a change. This ain't about showing tough love. It's about following rules and guides in which the coach didn't do and he should be disciplined for it.

He's a trolling non-sports guy. He doesn't know any better. Anyone with a rabbit brain know you can't expect someone to perform at their peak if they haven't eaten all day. And as mentioned, it's a NCAA rule.

A meal was provided. They missed it. Try to be different? smh

..and ya'll act like my opinion matters. I just happen to agree with the coach. I can have an opinion just like u. Not even worth debating.

IF this is true, I have to ask, what is more stupid? The idea that he felt he needed to use this as an option as a form of discipline, or the idea that he though he could do this and think nobody would find out about it?

He has been a coach for a long time so it's probably standard practice for him. He probably thought nothing of it. He started coaching in the days before the everything was cried about.

No...and Im sure Bewildered will tell you that being on time is a very good trait to have. It matters in the real world.. right Bewildered? :snicker:

I'm not trolling or "flaming," like you are TP. I'm sure you know damned well being on time is very important. But, when one isn't on time, that doesn't mean that one has to use extreme measures to punish. Would you not agree?

If the individuals were "f'ing off," like you advocate, they should be punished. But punishment doesn't include denying them the right to eat a college/university sponsored meal.

Puts it into its proper perspective. smh Dang TP.

It's pathetic... It's almost like this guy is just trying to get a reaction of the stupidity he posts sometimes. If he wants to do all that he needs to take his azz over to the Smack Board and troll all he wants...
