While it's important that we do get funds directed to the right place, there really isn't a need for baseless accusations. All indications are that the woman in question was well-intentioned; she just happened to step over boundaries.
Question: If he was injured in a game doesn't SU hold the burden for paying his medical expenses? I'm not being mean just curious. It's good that he is getting the resources needed.
Please pass this on....
He can apply for vocational rehabilitation and they will pay for education, rehab needs, etc....as well. My college, grad, and post grad was paid for through vocational rehab as long as I attended a college in Louisiana. Vocational Rehab will pay for law school and med school outside of Louisiana. They paid for my brother to go to Med School at UCLA.
This is something he will need because this may be a career ending injury. It's time now to start exploring options.
I hate this for this young man.
If I am not mistaken. All these kids have NCAA mandated insurance for injuries and treatment. I don't know what it covers though and if there is a minimum and max coverage required. All schools fund raise for these kind of incidents. Ole Miss did it for Chucky Mullins back in the day and Penn State did it for some player that ended up walking again.
Cool because its more than expenses for the young man. His family now has to be in Athens living.

Heard he is having tingling in his feet, which is a excellent sign.

Personally, I'd rather go through a relatives GoFundMe than risk money getting caught up in college politics. I know SU means well, and I'm sure whoever setup that GoFundMe does too. But neither has a lesser likelihood of trapping funds than the other. Let's just be real.
I don't think SU would risk that fund for Gales fall into some shady back room college politics. That would be a PR night mare for the school. I think they are just trying to make sure they don't incur any kind of NCAA violations.

I realize that, but let's say this fund generates over a million dollars by Friday. You don't think some ego in a suit & lapel pin isn't gonna try to have those funds diverted, or at least tinkered with?
Don't put the alum shades on, now...it'll happen at AAMU too. I don't trust nobody with that much money. Family or university gatekeepers included.
and possible fraud charges.

The schools insurance is the secondary insurance for the athlete. The parents primary insurance that covers the athlete is used first and then the secondary insurance kicks in. It usually will cover the overages and additional deductibles along with the rehab cost after the primary insurance reaches it's max.
Major Medical plans don't have maximums anymore thanks to the Afforadable Care Act. But the other insurance should pick up some of the deductibles/ coinsurance that he is left with. The GoFundMe money should really be serving to take care of family travel/ lodging and help the kid after rehab is done and he transitions into his new normal....whatever that may be.The schools insurance is the secondary insurance for the athlete.
