'Guarantee' games are they worth it for the HBCUs

That has been the issue at HBCU's for years. Supporting your own. We will pay top dollar to see an SEC Game, but complain when our own schools ask for a nickel at the gate.

I really don't think it is many of US that do that. You got some HBCU alums who may. And most of the time it's because they got some family member or something on the team. When you look at the SEC crowds, it ain't like they are filled with a bunch of us black folks. I think what you see is the Black community overall is more open to go pay money at those games because they know some kid who is playing. A lot of them folks probably are not HBCU grads either.

I can see if we saw tens of thousands of us at those SEC games. LOL. Now what we will do is go to a concert, etc and blow a lot of money in a heart beat.
But just like black business owners can attest. We complain about our folks being too high.

If a $500k+ money game is just helping us live from check to check, there are other issues at play that need to be addressed. And not just on message boards and Facebook groups.

I don't think anyone is arguing that point.

I've been waiting to reveal this just for this moment:

Ok in Theory, let's say SE Louisiana were to visit Alcorn. Let's say Alcorn is having a bad year and only has 3000 people buy a ticket while SE Louisiana only has 100 people buy a ticket. You have 3,100 people who have officially bought a ticket. The tickets are $25 each. 3,100 x $25 = $77,500 total BUT FOLLOW ME:

Before the 3,100 even get on campus, they must get a parking pass at $15 Each. 4 people can fit in a full size car so 3,100/4 = 775 Cars on campus. A car is a car unless it's a RV so the number of people in the car will not matter in this instance. $775 x $15 = $11,625

Say if you have Game Programs at $5 Each and sale about 100 of those: $500

So let's add the revenue so far: $77,500 + $11,625 + $500 =. $89,625

Keep in mind I have NOT even factored in the Concession Stand or In Stadium Merchandise Sales

Now, after the game is over, you subtract your expenses from your revenue and you will either get a profit or a loss. Keep in Mind: ALCORN Is HAVING A BAD YEAR.

HBCU Alums, we have been getting robbed. They are intentionally UNDERSTATING Attendence AND Money Game Check Total. Your eyes do not deceive you, there is more revenue being made than HBCU Adminstrators are admitting.

So absolutely zero operating costs huh? Day game, not lights, no PA system, no scoreboard, no security, payment to officials, etc?

I left out Operating Costs for a Reason. That along with Concession Stand and In Game merchandise revenue. There is always a method behind my madness. Keep in mind I'm going off Alcorn having a bad year yet somehow, I'm already near 100K in revenue.

What does any of this has to do with the topic at hand and do you really think you've uncovered some great secret?

I don't think anyone is arguing that point.

That's also a problem. Nobody wants to discuss the root causes.

We gripe about alumni not playing their part but nobody wants to talk about why (financial mismanagement).

Take Howard for example...non sports related, but it all ties in. Where are HU alumni throughout all these financial problems? And who really believes that future alumni will prop up our institutions when they keep shooting themselves in the foot, time and again? Especially when "leadership" is either blind, deaf or both?

Actually we talked about that at nauseum. At some point if becomes an excuse not to be proactive by challenging our administration.

Good point, especially about us complaining about black businesses prices being too high, but will pay the same from a white business.

HBCU Sports has a small fan base as it is and it really hurts when don't even get the support from the alum!

It's really funny to read posts from folk who are adamantly against the playoffs because there's no money to be made, then turn around and cry about money games that probably make more than our home games. Now, you'd rather play another FCS team I games that ain't gone make a dime. Y'all some of the biggest hypocrites on this planet. ADs got a job and it's keeping the athletic department in the black. They ain't getting money from us. Like some have said, either we step up to the plate and provide the much needed money or we STFU!!! This is business and if it don't make dollars....

Robber, I am sure that MTSU didn't break the bank for us. They don't have a bank to break. Im pretty sure that after expenses, we could have made the same thing in Jackson.

So how much is Alcorn PAYING SE Louisiana to come?

Have you factored in your OPERATING COSTS before you start counting the Revenue? You do realize it costs to host a football game. The programs cost money to make. You have to pay your personnel for their time to perform the various job functions from security to parking to concessions. Not to mention the cost of the stadium being open and running with full power.

SE LA had the same issues for years with no crowd at their games. To the point they stopped having football period. Nicholls State is having the same issues now.

I am against these money games, but this is the best argument for playing them. When I was working at Southern, a high administrator said to me if it was up to him Southern would never play a game on campus because of the headaches you’ve stated above.

So many people think hosting a home game is all revenue. How stupid could they be. You lose money on most home games if the attendance is not AT LEAST 8000. Depending on ticket price, etc.. ~8000 fans will help u break even.

Aint nobody hypocrites.

Remember........I was all for the playoffs until it was clear we was never going again.
I just laugh at all the hub bub at people claiming that we need to build up our own attendance at home and then they turn around and play every FBS and classic they can get in away from home.

Im not saying dont play these games. Ads have just gotten stupid when scheduling. What I'm saying is for conference teams that have problems beating teams in our own bottom teir conference, we have no reason at all to be playing a power 5 conference team. lol

Mid majors will kick up to sleep just as bad. Difference is for a half, you might actually get some good game planning in before the wheels fall off. Most teams in this conference got smoked getting taped up in the locker room. Being behind by 40 before the end of the 1st qtr aint bout crap. Lol

And miss me with this check stuff. Im still waiting for anyone on this board to show me what has decades of money games have done for you except keep the lights on on other week.

If your program is in that state then quit trying to support 16 sports and drop down. Stubborn PRIDE......NOT MONEY is what's killing a lot of HBCUs these days.
83, I think you're on record as being for the playoffs. You don't make the money argument, so my post didn't apply to you. The hypocrites are the ones who says we shouldn't go to the playoffs because there's no money in it.
Robber, I am sure that MTSU didn't break the bank for us. They don't have a bank to break. Im pretty sure that after expenses, we could have made the same thing in Jackson.
You might be right. But everybody didn't play MTSU. You got CAL, Cincy, with Auburn and UGA coming up. When negotiating with schools like this, the low figure should be $600K. If you're gonna do it, do it big. Keep playing FAMU in front of no damn body and get shown the door when your contract is up.

At GSU it breaks us....season tickets are $54....so per game at $18 that comes down to about $144k being made a game if there are 8000 season ticket holders. Yet, there are not 8000 season ticket holders.

The Texas Southern game does not count as a home game for season ticket holders. We have to buy tickets.

Also with the Cal game our band, cheerleaders, dancers, recruiters, and administration were on Apple's bill. Apple paid for our band to come and the administration struck a deal to include the cheerleaders, dancers, and recruiters. So I would say that it was over the $600k.

That is probably why our ADs take these money games instead of paying some D2 school nobody heard of to come to our campus. Or have to do a home and home with some team where our alums will help them sell some extra seats and they will not even bring 500 folks to your stadium. Not that it is their job to fill up your stadium. But at least act interested. LOL. And don't let weather be a factor in one of those type of home games that our fans ain't enamored with. Then you will lose money for sure. I don't ever remember SU falling below 8K fans for a game. But I damn sure have seen it been maybe 10-12K in the stadium for a game no one cared about.

Thank goodness it wasn't up to their incompetent ass.

Cool....I was unaware that it was a return game...sometimes reading what Braveheart post causes grave confusion.

That's the norm. On very rare occasions you will get an FCS school to come to your house for one game and it sure as hell won't be a school the caliber SLU is right now.

Their budget is decent for their level( mid major) so they could drop a little change...
