After sitting out spring practice, Jaguars have extra work to do

Six of those players are academically ineligible: defensive backs Bryan Anderson and Justin Bethancourt, offensive linemen Brandon Thibodeaux and Neako Jones, linebacker Jordan Taylor and punter Paul Randle Soden. Some of the academic casualties have appealed and could be reinstated, but Southern officials won’t say who falls into that category.

Four others left the team: running backs Jamarcus Jarvis and Tyre Bracken, offensive lineman Clayton Sylve and defensive lineman Gerald Brent. Also, kicker Kyle Yonke was dismissed.

The bottom line is that coach Dawson Odums and his staff have a whole lot of stuff to figure out before the Jaguars open the season Sept. 5 at Louisiana Tech.

“The first thing we’re trying to do is just figure out a little bit about our football team,” Odums said. “We lose guys every year. You lose some to graduation, you lose some to discipline, you lose some to academics. At the end of the day, we’re still going to kick off Sept. 5 and the guys who are here will be ready to go.”

The biggest loss is Anderson, who was a returning starter as a sophomore at free safety. Depth at running back took a hit with the losses of Bracken and Jarvis, though 1,000-yard rusher Lenard Tillery and third-leading rusher Malcolm Crockett return.

Only starter out of that was the safety Bryan Anderson. The rest were backups. Outside of Anderson, Tyree Bracken and the punter Soden played more than the other cats. We signed another punter and have another on the roster already.

Anderson is still on campus, and will practice with the team as part of the scout team.

This isn't like last year with all that foolishness going on, leaving All-SWAC linemen ineligible and other starters on the side. That O-lineman, Anthony Mosely, is back after practicing with the team on the scout squad last season.
 
Wait, so you telling me that THIS story isn't from last year? This is actually a new story that sounds like the story from last year?

Well, Southern did go to back-to-back SCGs and won 18 out of 23 total games (78 percent) in the last two seasons. Outside of Anderson and Bracken, a lot of those other cats weren't going into the 2-deep depth chart.
Not saying that SU doesn't need backups, but the backups are already on campus in fall camp.

But J, this happens year after year after year. I'm sure NCAA will be putting a satellite station on campus soon. This has happened frequently under Odums tenure. This can't be good. How many more cancelled spring practices do you guys have to go through for you all to understand all this?

The canceled spring practice this year were the last of those original APR sanctions. Right now, Southern has a clean slate but has to produce data the NCAA wants or face another postseason ban. So right now, it's on the folks in athletics to keep things straight. Stump took over with the reduced practice time and scholarship reductions (which occurred under Pete and LaFleur). Broussard got the NCAA to stagger the sanctions out over time instead of hitting SU with them all at once.

Real talk, ineligibility/folks leaving the program happens everwhere. UL-Lafayette had to let go of some cats since the summer. Southeastern, when I was working out there, always had some cats ineligible/suddenly coming in. It goes on a lot more frequently than you think.

But J, yours are more than the usual small school amount. And EVERY year in that number. That's alarming.

But Beans, six are ineligible while four simply left the team. Six ineligible players (one starter) is kind of the norm. It happens a lot more frequently than you think. Now I can tell when it was alarming ... late in the Pete era. Now that isht was alarming ... and the reason SU is in the mess it's in now.

I hope the young men do what they need to do to right their ships academically. Sometimes it's dropping below full-time status. Sometimes, it's taking the wrong course.
