Comparing McNair to other black quarterbacks

If Michael Vick, Vince Young, Robert Griffin, or Donovan McNabb played in the SWAC, do y'all think they would have put up the same numbers as McNair?

I think all of them would have done well. I don't know if they could put up the numbers McNair did. He was a linebacker playing QB.

None of them had the combination of size and strength of McNair. All would have excelled depending on where they went to school. McNair did have talent at Alcorn on the offensive side of the ball for sure.

Mike Vick was probably the most freakish athlete ever to play the position at his peak. He would have dominated the SWAC even more so than McNair.

I don't think so. McNair took some serious hits. SU damned near cracked his ribs in 93 in our win in BR. He kept coming back in the game. He had to sit out most of the game against Valley the next week and they had to bring him in the game and he lead them to victory. Vick would have been injured in the SWAC. He wouldn't have had Va Tech OL protecting him. He would have been electric no doubt. But I doubt he would have put up McNair like numbers. McNair was literally tossing mofos off of him.

Vick would have easily outran anybody in the SWAC. Hell even Florida State couldn't keep up with him.

You see what Vince Young did to USC in that title game. Imagine him in the SWAC.

Vince Young had some good UT OL as well. Remember these guys would be playing with SWAC talent in front of them. This is not to say they would not be great. Just would not have other FBS like talent with them to help. They would experience what Mac did. Vick ran through some nice holes that Va Tech OL created.

He wouldn't need a Va Tech OL to protect him from SWAC defenses. In his prime, Vick would have completely dominated the SWAC.

I think we minimize what those guys team mates did for them in FBS level football. And if we are talking Mac era football. SWAC defenses were alot better then than they have been in the 2000s. Again, this is not to say they would not have excelled. But they would have had to be damn near a one man show like Mac was to win in the SWAC. That's all I am saying. Just not selling the SWAC defenses in those early 90s down the drain.

VY would completely destroy SWAC defenses. He had good lines at UT but he had garbage in front of him at Madison, so he was able to improvise under duress... at least good enough for the college level.

Steve Mcnair was the best QB I've ever seen. Better than Young, Vick, McNabb, etc. The numbers McNair put up back in the mid-90s must be put into context. That was an era where QBs were either one thing or the other. You didn't have QBs throw for 4000 and rush for 1000 back then. You didn't have the spread option and other offenses designed to take advantage of a double threat QB. Steve McNair did what he did on broken plays, scrambles, all with the greatest degree of difficulty possible. He finished 3rd in the Heisman vote....from the SWAC!!! Think about that for a moment....and ask yourself when's the next time that will happen.

So you're saying there's no way Vick or VY could have did the same thing against those same SWAC defenses? Those guys did it against some of the best in the nation.

That's exactly what I'm saying. Again, context. Young might've come the closest but he wasn't the runner or passer McNair was. Vick wasn't the passer or built to take hits like Mcnair was. And neither of them had McNair's pure instincts. I've thought for a while that McNair's legacy has been sold short thanks to the proliferation of duel-threat QBs from this generation. There's so many 3000/1000 guys out now you'd think they're all great. This thread proves it. Griffin, Young - those guys had offenses tailored directly to their needs. and they still didn't produce the way McNair did in college. And it's worth noting that McNair was a better pro than all of those guys as well.

I'd put Cam Newton closest to McNair's level as a passer, runner and just overall playmaker............ And Ben Roethisberger :D

So, you like a certain archetype when it comes to QBs

Cam Newton? Really?

Donavan out of all of them was the most complete qb in college. Two sport athlete, speed, arm, size, and smarts. He would tore up the swac if he was in the conference.

Easily, if you give him those same stud WRs and ground game to keep those LBers/SS honest.

Cannot coach speed and decision making. CW had BOTH, along w/ several others noted here.

Charlie Ward threw to many interceptions. But he would have excel in the conference.

Yep. Because we still had schools putting multiple players in the NFL Draft (as compared to now when the entire conference might not get a player drafted)
