Texas Southern Withdraws From SWAC Tournament

I would think they would have the same problem of not having enough players. They still have to serve that 1 game suspension. Withdrawing from the tournament is not the sanctioned punishment.

For once, you sorta have a valid point mane!

Withdrawing from the tournament may not be the sanctioned punishment but it may be the agreed upon alternative. The ADs and SWAC office had discussed all of this before the press release came out.

From the article you just posted...

The TSU women, led by 2015 SWAC Coach of the Year Johnetta Hayes-Perry, are still eligible for postseason play.
"What she has been able to do has been truly remarkable," McClelland said. "The rules are the regular season champion, if they do not win the tournament, they will get a bid to the WNIT.
"So there's still another opportunity for them to redeem themselves, and do something positive for this institution."

Then when do they serve the 1 game suspension?

Looks like they are trying to skirt the rule of being suspended by not participating in the Swac tournament. Whatever the next game they have is when they are suppose to serve the suspension.

That's exactly what I'm thinking.

So if they voluntarily took the team out of the Tournament, does that mean players returning next season would still have to sit out a game because of the fight?

Oh yeah, for those who do not know, the tournament is in Houston, TX. Our expenses would have been minimal.

LOL.. I guess that is true but still you trying to make this what it's not. Your school had two options.

1.) Go to the SWAC tourney and lose 60-10
or
2.) Replace the 1 game suspension by withdrawing from the SWAC tourney and accept WNIT invite

What's the better option? CASE CLOSED.

I certainly "get it"

I doubt it. I am sure the conference has already accepted their withdrawal as punishment. I think it would be appropriate for the conference to release a statement to verify that.

If they aren't participating in the SWAC tournament, it didn't count toward the suspension and the next game would.

IF they get an invite to the WNIT (which they should not) that game would be the one to count as a suspension.

Remember this is an NCAA rule, not SWAC.

Although I agree this is their intention to skirt the rules, they're not factoring in the NCAA preventing them from playing in their next game. Which basically prevents them from getting an invite.

The punishment by the SWAC was suspension, after the suspension the rules has to be enforce that the suspended players miss the NEXT GAME.

Looks like you need to find some business.

This would be the first time

The SWAC's statement specifically indicates that the suspension is for each team's quarterfinal game. The way I interpret it (right, wrong, or indifferent) is that once this game is missed, the suspension has been satisfied. Those 15 players will not play in the quarterfinals. TSU chooses not to field a team. Those 8 TSU players STILL are not playing in the quarterfinals.

Had the SWAC said the suspensions were from each team's NEXT game, I would be more inclined to agree with some of the sentiment. But the way the statement is worded, all 15 players will miss the quarterfinals. My question still remains, what happens to the bracket now that TSU withdraws, as there is a game at 6PM tonight to determine who was to face TSU tomorrow. Does the winner of tonight's game get a quarterfinal bye?

I posed this question myself when I heard about the suspensions.

It all comes down to how they rule the SWAC game. I believe that in the case of an automatic forfeit (since we can't field a minimum of 5, which would be the case if we technically still "play" the game), that game counts as the 1 game suspension, a 2-0 loss, and thus enables the girls to play in the WNIT.

According to NCAA Rules & Regulations:
Rule 5, Section 3:

Art. 5. When a forfeit is declared, the score shall be recorded as 2-0 and all
statistics (other than the teams’ and coaches’ won-lost records) shall be voided,
unless 30 minutes of playing time has been completed on the game clock. In that
case, the score at the end of play shall stand and all other statistics shall count.
Rule 10, Section 5:
Art. 11. The first time an individual participates in a fight during the season
(including exhibition games), the individual shall be suspended from participating
in the team’s next regular-season game (not an exhibition contest), including
tournament competition.
Art. 13. When an individual participates in a fight during her team’s final game
of the season, that individual shall be suspended from participating in the team’s
next regular-season game (not an exhibition contest) for which that team member
or team personnel would be eligible

... but that's just my understanding of the rules.

The seedings have now changed...

EDIT: There is no women's game tonight.

I think when you forfeit a game, the other team automatically wins without having to play. I could be wrong.

So therefore if they win, they go on to the next round. It Doesn't seem to complicated

I think our Athletic Director, Dr. Charles McClelland has handled this unfortunate situation with first-class professionalism. I have followed this team all season via radio broadcast and know how hard they have worked along with the coaching staff to compile a great season. I know that they wish they would have reacted in a different way and it's unfortunate that they are not able to battle for the SWAC Tourney crown and represent the league in the NCAA Tournament.

It's disheartening for our alumni, faculty, staff, students, and supporters that we will not be able to cheer our ladies to victory in the tourney. I do not condone the behavior of either team and it was a huge embarrassment to the University, conference, and HBCUs in general. However, as others have said, I hope that they learn from this and are able to redeem themselves as well as forgive themselves for their actions.

I believe in accountability and taking responsibility of your actions but I must say that I am really disgusted with Southern at this time. I have no respect for Coach Sandy Pugh and will be rooting against them in the SWAC Tournament. I think she immediately tried to play victim and divert the blame on TSU and hold her squad blameless.
That's ridiculous. She gave an immediate account of what she saw from her vantage point. As did I when I saw it happen. From the other angle of the video there. Additionally, the only reason why TSU is not playing this week is because you don't have enough players available to put 5 on the court. That "decision" to remove them from the tournament had already been made by the result of the SWAC suspensions. Let's be clear about that.
