Texas Southern Withdraws From SWAC Tournament

What did it was that they knew if they went to Houston, they were gonna get whooped in the first round so they may as well just stay home. Won't they get the NIT invite anyway? If they do, what's to applaud about the decision?

It was self-imposed. If you read the ESPN article it says TSU made this decision prior to the SWAC's decision anyway. I hate we are losing another opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament, but actions such as what happened on Saturday warrant consequences that will sting while teaching valuable life lessons. Kudos to our athletic leaders on how this was handled.

"Texas Southern imposed its own penalty on the women's basketball team, withdrawing from the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament that begins Wednesday.

That move Monday night came hours before the conference handed out suspensions for 15 players involved in the bench-clearing fight between the Lady Tigers and Southern on Saturday night. It's believed to be one of the biggest number of suspensions in NCAA women's basketball history."

Per AD Charles McClelland:
“We totally accept the punishment, and we have added additional punishment,” he said. “We could have pulled in some eligible players and had a team in the tournament, but that is not what this is all about. We are not going to put championships above the integrity of the program.”

If we had used the eligible players and won against the winner of Tuesday night's game our girls would have been back for the rest of the tournament (minus Vines she would have to sit another game). But as Charles said, a championship is not as important as the integrity of the program.

Now, I know some folk won't get it but I posted it anyway.

TP they will still more than likely get the WNIT invite especially since the double forfeit situation was updated and the Lady Tigers are now the outright conference regular season champs. However, those ladies and the coaches wanted to be in the NCAA tournament not the WNIT. A couple of us were talking about this last night. If they do go, I doubt they play with any enthusiasm because that was not the end goal. Whether they were going to end up playing Tenn or South Carolina, they still wanted the experience of playing in the Big Dance and not the Womens Not In Tournament as some people call the NIT.

I hear you but our champ should always go to the NIT and WNIT. I know im gonna get some backlash but I would rather us put our teams where we have the greater chance of success. We are the bottom and sometimes you have to build from that. We are NOT a major league. We have some people who would give their right arm for the SWAC to play in teh NCAA 1-AA playoffs. The NIT is the same thing to me. We have a much greater chance of winning the NIT than getting our of the first round of the Big Dance. I know it will never happen since the Big Dance IS a big deal but that is our rightful place. If the TxSo women want to be put on the map, winning the WNIT is the way to go and, though a longshot, is achieveable. It's much better than losing 150-30 in to the #1 seed in the nation. What we need are recruits. If the SWAC wants to get talent and coaching, we need some significant wins not insignificant losses.

Translation: We were gonna get our azz whooped so why spend the money.

Let's get real here. Let's see where the integrity stands when the WNIT invite comes up.

Like I said...some won't get it. These girls are being punished by not being allowed to play in the SWAC Tournament. That, in itself, carries two punishments because it means they do not have a chance to compete in the NCAA. Also, these young ladies have other punishments to look forward to from the athletic department. We are not going to beat them down. If the WNIT opportunity comes along I hope they go...that has no bearing on the punishments that have already been levied. Even after the tournaments are over our girls will still be serving out their punishments.

Oh yeah, for those who do not know, the tournament is in Houston, TX. Our expenses would have been minimal.

Now you know that ain't what happened. Even Charles stated this and that is why they made the decision.

Dr. Charles McClelland, vice president for intercollegiate athletics at TSU, said the Southwestern Athletic Conference has suspended eight members of the TSU women's basketball team in the wake of that altercation during a key conference game in the HP and E Arena.

"The SWAC has decided, in conjunction with us, that everyone that was participating in the altercation, as far as throwing punches, will be suspended," McClelland said in an interview with FOX26 SPORTS.

"Right now that's eight individuals, and because there are eight that are involved, we have ten members on our team, Texas Southern has decided we are not going to participate in the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament championship.

I would think they would have the same problem of not having enough players. They still have to serve that 1 game suspension. Withdrawing from the tournament is not the sanctioned punishment.

The TSU women, led by 2015 SWAC Coach of the Year Johnetta Hayes-Perry, are still eligible for postseason play.
"What she has been able to do has been truly remarkable," McClelland said. "The rules are the regular season champion, if they do not win the tournament, they will get a bid to the WNIT.
"So there's still another opportunity for them to redeem themselves, and do something positive for this institution."
 
So they suspend most of our girls when they were breaking up the fight. Suspend the players who threw punches and not the ones who were trying to stop the shit. Dumb azz folks.
