Bethune-Cookman football coach Brian Jenkins denied a report by the Montgomery (Alabama) Advertiser that he is a candidate for the head coaching job at Alabama State.

“I have not applied for nothing,” Jenkins replied in a text message Thursday night. “I work for B-CU and B-CU only. Can't control others' interest. Big recruiting weekend this week. Really don't need this.”

Loci Baker, chairman of Alabama State's board of trustees, told the Advertiser that Jenkins likely would be one of the top names on ASU's list, but he did not say Jenkins applied for the job.

Baker also told the Advertiser the financially-strapped school likely would not be able to afford the Wildcats' successful coach or other top targets.

When asked if the Hornets have the money to pay Jenkins, Baker said, “No. No way.”

Jenkins earns a salary of $265,000 per year, according to school tax records. That is almost $90,000 more than ASU paid head coach Reggie Barlow before he was fired Nov. 24 despite posting five consecutive winning seasons.

Baker said the school could try to make up the difference a top-notch coach would seek by raising money through donors and alumni.
