The search committee hired to help choose Florida A&M's next head football coach narrowed down its list of choices to eight candidates during a Wednesday meeting, and is on track to submit three finalists to FAMU President Elmira Mangum by Dec. 17.
During Wednesday's meeting six of the committee members and chairman John Wooten created top five lists of who the new coach should be. The candidates were then ranked by how many top-five votes they received.
The eight candidates are: Charlie Weatherbie, former head coach at Louisiana-Monroe; Joker Phillips, former head coach at Kentucky; Willie Simmons, offensive coordinator at Alcorn State; Corey Fuller, interim head coach at Florida A&M; Latrell Scott, current head coach at Virginia State; Ester Junior III, a member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame; Mark Orlando, offensive coordinator at Prairie View A&M; and Tony Samuel, former head coach at Southeast Missouri State.
The candidates will be interviewed via Skype Wednesday and Friday. The list will then be narrowed down to three names that will be submitted to Mangum and Kellen Winslow, the university's athletic director.
Jamey Shouppe, FAMU's head baseball coach and a member of the search committee, said he was pleased with the list of candidates.
"For me, it worked out," he said.
"I think, from the people that sat on the committee, the general consensus was it was a good list. There was no discussion about people who should be added to the list. I think we got the best eight."
Originally, the plan was to have a top five after members of the committee ranked the individual 50 to 60 applicants based on set criteria. Those rankings, however, produced a list of names the committee wasn't satisfied with.
