FAMU's band will not travel to Tenn State unless trip is paid in part by Tenn State

Re: FAMU's band will not travel to Tenn State unless trip is paid in part by Tenn Sta

Mad? Not at all...one I'm not stressed about the 100 traveling and two I'm more worried about FAMU going to Jackson this weekend and trying to win a ball game

We're not worried about a game that's a month away in which different things regarding this issues can change..but I see some people who are

O OK. Well this is a public forum so I can discuss what I want

Re: FAMU's band will not travel to Tenn State unless trip is paid in part by Tenn Sta

This clarification was posted by the Tallahassee Democrat earlier today:

"CLAIRFICATION: Responding to a question at Monday’s meeting of the 220 Quarterback Club, FAMU President Elmira Mangum said she wanted to “share the cost” with Tennessee State for the FAMU band to travel to Nashville, Tennessee, for the Sept. 27 game. A story in Tuesday’s edition of The Tallahassee Democrat stated Mangum wants to share in the game’s revenue to pay for the band’s trip."

Again, we HAVE money to take the band out of town

I'm not choosing sides or playing favorites, but I do have a question (and this is NOT smack):

The article in the link on the first post stated that FAMU will save money by busing the team to the Miami and TSU game (in Nashville) and will save $40,000 by busing the team to Jackson State. The same article also stated that FAMU will earn $700,000 for playing the Hurricanes. President Mangum went on to say that they've borrowed money from themselves for "leverage for some other debts" and now that money needs to be put back in the original place. And AD Winslow said he wasn't happy about how the contract was negotiated to include the FAMU band.

So, if FAMU will save $40,000, will receive $700,000 but has to pay back on self-borrowed debts, and since FAMU does have the money to take the band out of town (as you said), why is it so difficult for FAMU band to just pay their own way to the TSU game? Why does FAMU need TSU to help share the cost?

To be honest, I couldn't tell you. I think Mangum understands that the goal is to get FAMU athletics department back in the black, so I think she and the AD would rather save money where they can(or not have to spend as much) to get the the department back on track.

That's logical and makes sense. But isn't it just as sensible to NOT send the band and save money? Or is it in the contract that FAMU band HAS to be at the TSU game?

I'm not sure if the bands are in the contract...I think before the Marching 100 got suspended, it was expected that they would make the trip to the first game two seasons ago...not sure if things got rearranged after that. I assume since TSU is pretty much saying they will pay for transportation but won't budge on anything else and Mangum is not afraid to leave the band in Tally, that the bands aren't written into the contract.

Re: FAMU's band will not travel to Tenn State unless trip is paid in part by Tenn Sta

I really haven't understood why HBCU bands have to be so big, which in most cases the schools are financially strapped. If a school has a 400 piece versus a 200 piece band, one can expect that the band's travel cost will be twice as much. Also, it's more of a headache for a band director to keep up with 400 students versus 200 students. Also, a bigger band doesn't always mean a better band. It's a lot easier to get 200 students on one page versus 400 students on one page, which IMO, Doc Greggs never cared about SU band being no bigger than 160 to 200 members and sometimes less. Most of Doc. Greggs field shows were designed for only a 128 piece band, which he got the most out of when the band was 75% to 80% brass, which means that at least 100 members of the band played a brass instrument, with the reason being saxophones, drums, probably 2 clarinets, 1 flute, and 1 piccolo.

FAMU AD Winslow said he wasn't pleased how the contract was negotiated to include the band. Anyway, if FAMU is in the practice of saving money (which isn't a bad idea), then yes, I would leave the band back in Tallahassee. Besides, (and this is no smack), Tennessee State shouldn't be talk too loud about contracts, considering they backed out of the one we had with them to play this year.

I can't speak for other schools, but M4 has their own account (separate from UAPB). During the "off" season, the band goes and participates in events and earns money for their expenses. Alumni and supporters do contribute money to the band through our endowment funds that can be specified for M4 use, but most of the expenses for them come from their own account. I think the common practice of our old Chancellor (Davis Jr) was so accustomed to "robbing Peter to pay Paul" is why M4 got a separate account (phil would have more knowledge).

Re: FAMU's band will not travel to Tenn State unless trip is paid in part by Tenn Sta

FAMU sounds like Job's wife with this foolishness :shame:

Re: FAMU's band will not travel to Tenn State unless trip is paid in part by Tenn Sta

Why pay the other school's travel cost when it balances out on the other end when they have to pay yours? As far as PWC's doing it, yes they are but most are FBS schools.
Besides, doesn't FAMU have a history of not fulfilling their end of the contract? Just saying.

Because of the fiscal years that they are in. You have some years when you have more income coming in due to the fact of having more home games and can afford to do that versus the other years when you're on the road and don't have that additional income.

Out of all the schools in the MEAC only 2 come to yall stadium. The only SWAC band I have never saw come to Alcorn was Prairie View.

I can say that PV has been to Alcorn several times before but not during the non scholarship years (losing streak).

I read it as the Miami contract for the band and not the TnSt game.

That is the case for most schools, especially when it comes to athletic budgets. According to USA Today, Norfolk State is the only public HBCU whose athletic budget that is in the black and less depended on by other School Funds over a 9 year period (2005-2013), but the university has collected a lot money in Student Fees to support the school's athletic programs, which is not a plus for cash strapped students. Out of approximately 6,500 students, NSU collected $10,001,421 in 2013, which means each student had to pay an additional $769.34 per semester in support of NSU's athletic program.

I have always wondered why HBCUs did not use the concept of a travel band. If your band is 300 members strong, only take the ones that are actually in the field show and leave alternates behind. Would that not save some money?

That was the concept back in the 80's and early 90's. The large traveling band didn't come into play until the late 90's and early 2000's when everyone had to have a 300 piece band.

Yeah and student fees are basically a subsidy when they get that high.

Yep....The athletic fee the students at NSU pay is a little outrageous, but I'm sure they voted for that.

Which students? The ones currently payin the fee or the ones who have long sense left? I doubt they hold a yearly vote.

That's the way it works. Southern blacks took azz whippings at lunch counters and school's only for other black foreigners and new generation of blacks to look down on them. Touché Mofo's..

I'm sure the current students have to pay the fee, but the school's by-laws should allow the students to vote for or against the fee if the student body choses to. It's no different than paying taxes for something that was passed before you were eligible to vote. This is why ALL college students should be actively involved in their school's SGA. Grambling could not charge its students an additional fee for athletics until it was voted upon and passed by the school's student body.

I think on certain performances we only took a set number of band members to save money. I don't see why it is not done more often especially with the fiscal cuts we are all facing.
