INDIANAPOLIS | The NCAA Board of Directors overwhelmingly approved a package of historic reforms Thursday that will give the nation's five biggest conferences the ability to unilaterally change some of the basic rules governing college sports.<br />

If the 16-2 decision stands, there will be striking differences between the 65 largest schools and the more than 280 others in Division I beginning as early as Oct. 1, though few expect change to come that quickly.<br />

What is the exact make-up of the NCAA? Is it the college/university presidents? I guess the one school one vote principle doesn't exist in the NCAA.

I just read that all 351 Division 1 schools have to vote on this and that if 125 vote against it it's dead. So why would the other 286 schools vote for this? I know the 65 are threating to leave the NCAA if this doesn't pass, I would say goodbye.

Won't be a vote by the 351 schools. Any school that opposes it will have to sign an override petition, if one is started, and 125 would have to join in order for the measure to be shelved. Otherwise, it moves forward.
 
This is the beginning of the end of college athletics. I imagine you'll start to see amateur status, agent involvement and a slew of other possible restrictions be requested by the P5 in an effort to solidify their superiority and flexibility over the other smaller schools.

All this does is create an NCAA caste system of the have and have nots! Not that it wasn't there already--in a obscure setting that is, but this is just downright in your face I'm going to do it and there is nothing you can do about it fashion.

Implementing a true playoff setting is the only defense for this move.

I agree with all of this especially the bolded.

Of course this is centered around football so I can't see why the other 6 FBS conferences would cosign this. At least the NCAA and the Big 5 can stop using that "student athlete" front and change it to "paid amateurs" or "college athletes".

We know this ain't flying in basketball so the P5 and their ESPN can try all their want to push "the best 64" like they've been trying to do the past few years but it ain't gonna fly (especially with CBS).

Those 65 don't need the NCAA. But the NCAA needs them.

You never know. The P5 includes basketball powerhouses like Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, etc.... They will come up with something as a compromise with basketball. They like how March Madness is set up. No way the Networks can live with out the big boys in March. Sure folks root for the little schools to pull off some upsets. But at the end of the day. The big name schools with the McDonald All Americans sell the seats in those Final Four arenas.

Yep!! I said it awhile back. The NCAA as we know it will cease to exist. The Power 5 commishs are not playing no games. Emmert is on his way out as well too.

I know they want the basketball blue bloods. I'm just saying instead of the top 64 teams like they keep suggesting on ESPN, they will continue to allow all the conference winners to get in the Big Dance.

Do I think there will be some changes to it? no doubt about it? It's going on in baseball as well as they invest more into that sport.
 
So the powers that be give virtual Cart Blanche to the elitist of the elete schools, while the smaller and disproportionately larger number of HBCUs have the their feet held to the fire over such things as APR??? Funny that this decision has been handed down and they still to my knowledge haven't given a ruling on Southern's post season ban status.

And who in the heck regulates the NC(KKK)AA??? A Congressional review is long overdue on these jokers. They are about as clean as a hog in a mud bath.

It's coming and it's going to be a long hard fight for whatever school(s)/conference decides to lead it on.
