SWAC's Postseason Request Allows Transitioning Schools into League Postseason

In light of the SWAC's request and approval for schools who are postseason ineligible to have a spot in the postseason tournament, the NCAA has changed one of the long-standing rules regarding NCAA transitioning institutions.

Schools like Northern Kentucky, Grand Canyon, Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian can begin competing in league postseason tournaments, though they would not be eligible for the league's automatic berth. Big, big change. Could lower some recruiting hurdles, etc...

Each league would presumably get the decision and may have to tweak league by-laws. Some may hold by keeping APR ineligible teams out and/or some may hold and keep transitioning teams out. This could be interesting...

As you can tell below, Northern Kentucky is stoked!

Northern Kentucky University men's basketball coach Dave Bezold said the toughest part of the last two years was being unable to compete in Atlantic Sun championships.

The Norse will have their chance this year.

A new NCAA policy grants all 15 of NKU's sports programs eligibility for conference postseason championships starting in 2014-15. Although NKU is two years into a four-year reclassification process to Division I and cannot compete in NCAA tournaments until the period is complete, the clarification allows the Norse to qualify for, participate in and even host A-Sun championships.

"We're ecstatic," Bezold said. "It gives players in the middle of the season something to play for, to know they can compete in the conference tournament. Now we're able to grow our programs two years faster. It's a tremendous thing for student-athletes across the board."

Under the former rule, a conference lost its NCAA tournament automatic bid if an ineligible team won the league tournament. The new policy allows conferences to award the highest-ranked finisher the automatic qualifier, meaning if NKU wins an A-Sun tourney before its reclassification is finished, then the team it defeats inherits the NCAA bid.

I feel the need to say that I am on record in saying that I was all for the SWAC taking the steps necessary to see to it that all teams were able to complete in the tournament last year...even though I didn't agree with the timing of the announcement coming at the end of the season.

Kenn, we targeted schools and did not have compassion. A grace period and now Duer is trying cover his butt (Yes, I know that the President run the SWAC but as commissioner, he could have stood up for SOMETHING). JSU's stance is growing ever stronger as time progresses.

I would ask have you lost your mind but.... Who are you really?

Honestly, the SWAC does look like hypocrites on this issue. Not just because it is JSU either. The SWAC came out and took a strong stance on APR and I find it kind of cowardly that we are now backing off the standard that we set. You can't draw your line in the sand, say this is our principle stance and then proceed to back away as soon as things get uncomfortable.

My father taught me as a young man that you should always be willing to live and die on the decisions that you make. The conference took a stance and as soon as they saw the consequences for their stance, they ran from it. That is cowardly as a conference.

There are so many dumb schools in this conference we really need this rule. Now that BamaState is academically ineligible there are at least 5 basketball teams academically inadequate.

So we black we dumb we need the bar lowered to compete because we can't meet minimum standards. I say that every black school should take the money wasted on compliance departments and go buy Jordans and longer weave for the dancers.

Thanks NCAA for lowering the bar....we needed it

The folks who voted on the hard stance are no longer there now. It is no different than a new congress or court coming in and making a ruling that is different from the previous group.

What concerns me is the issue of poor performance in the classroom and staff that are not applying the pressure on the students. It's like the emphasis on education is not neccesarily there. In layman's term and correct me if I'm wrong but if you have a low APR rate that means that student athletes are not making adequate progress toward their degree. Therefore forcing student athletes not to enroll in basketweaving etc... but courses that progress them to graduating.

That being said if there are schools that are not in a position to do so, it is an insult to schools that are not in violation to raise a trophy on their success on the field/court but lack the academic performance.

I look at it like this MONEY before academics. You have 6 schools that cannot compete in post season means 6 different groups of supporters that will not show up....MONEY at the end of the day.

Save your breath, you're talking to the parrot

What does any of this have to do with the SWAC?

What HBCU do you know that can afford to have basket weaving studies for their athletes?

At the end of the day there is a reason why the SWAC is in the position it is in. Whether its on the field or off the field OUR Conference always seem to find a way to be on the negative side of things...my opinion is not solely based on the article presented.

I hope that TP is dumb because ALL of you all can't be the same type of dumb. This is a totally different issue than the one the SWAC made with our APR casualites and SUs ummmm "problems". Why did TT try to link the two together. TP is so confused.
