Howard Joining SWAC in fall

History will take place this fall during the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Confererence soccer season as Howard University is all set to compete. Last year, the SWAC entered a membership agreement welcoming the Lady Bison into the conference for the sport of women's soccer.

A season ago, the women’s soccer program competed as an independent. HU will officially join the SWAC this fall when they open the season on the road at VMI August 22. The Lady Bison will make their conference debut at Alcorn State September 26.

I understand them wanting to call Alabama home (what up jag 89 :lol: ), but seriously, what's the purpose of this? :confused: Howard must have money to blow. :scared:

btw, Howard's men's soccer is joining the Sun Belt.

It's a head scratcher that Howard would join conferences that are not even close to their footprint. For soccer! Is soccer THAT big at Howard?

Not necessarily at Howard but on the East Coast. They probably joined the SWAC so that they could actually be competitive instead of joining a PWC conference and getting ran off the field.

I also agree that the SWAC could make some noise in soccer if they competed but they would have to do it before the big school decide to invest more into it
 
...and just why are we concerned about Howard joining our conference? If we are as good in soccer as we think we are, we should look forward to kicking Howard's ass. COMPETE, COMPETE, COMPETE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never really got into soccer until this summer. However, I enjoyed it and will be watching more of it. However, golf is an interesting game too. I normaly wait until the back 9 to watch it though...

It would make sense since Alabama is the closest state with SWAC schools to D.C., but I'm sure you Bamas think they want to call Alabama home because they really like the State of Alabama.

As far as entertainment value, and having a chance to actually make a buck here or there, I think the up side is better that golf

Yep. As long as the MLS continues to expand and grow in popularity, there will be more opps. I'm sure if all our schools started playing, that would open up opps for international (Africa mainly) exposure (that and of course the very few who could end up playing for the EPL and big clubs overseas)

Yes, I agree the upside is. Soccer is fastly emerging in the U.S. The t.v. ratings this summer were phenomenal.

we see the best of the best playing world cup every 4 years and get excited....now lets watch minor league soccer and see if we get that same feeling

Well that's just it isn't it? We ( SWAC ) would have to goal in, as we did with the women.
 
old, but yea.

SWAC should look into picking up men's soccer though, like stated before. there is not much competition to get talent, if they want to stay regionally and play.

I feel the same way. We will get excited for the World Cup in 2018 (Russia) and 2022 (Qatar). While the sports is growing across the country, we will see how much we really care in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2020.

USA Women's soccer has a good following too, since they are like the #1 team in the world.
 
The U.S. ain't watching soccer. The U.S. watched the World Cup. Ain't nobody looking at MLS games right now....

I think it's a good deal for Howard, but if I were them I would've made the home games in ATL. They have a good alumni base here and there is a vibrant SWAC alumni base and some very good soccer venues to play at. It's a little far for TX travel, but makes sense.

Along with the advantages of the automatic conference bid, didn't they elimnate some sports a few years back? This may be the sports that they have to keep to stay at D1 and Title IX.
