The Assistant Band Director/Instructor of Music will provide effective leadership, management, organization and artistic direction of a comprehensive band program to include conducting the Concert Band, Pep Band and the University Marching Band (Sonic Boom of the South).

The JSU Department of Music offers the Bachelor of Music degrees in Music Education, Performance, and Music Technology. Additionally, the Master of Music Education degree is offered. The JSU School of Fine and Performing Arts is within the College of Liberal Arts. As a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), the Department is comprised of a deeply committed community of performers, educators and scholars dedicated to enriching the academic journey and musical training of JSU students. Mr. Travis Prewitt, a native of Memphis, Tennessee, is an upcoming 2013 graduate of Jackson State University, where he will receive a B.M.E. Mr. Prewitt participated in the JSU “Sonic Boom of the Southâ€￾ Marching Band Trombone Section, and served as section leader. During his undergraduate years he arranged music for and conducted for some of the ensembles in the music department.

Also he served 3 years as assistant band director at Provine High School.

Mr. Prewitt continues to arrange and assist the famous sonic Boom of the south marching band, in which has granted him the opportunity to recieve the 2011 HBCU arranger of the year award.

. Nathan Haymer is young...he is leader at SU...... So is Mr. Brian Simmons, but look what SU did. Travis is talented.. so age should not natter if that person is qualified & have self discipline.

Kind of young? Wasn't Dowell Taylor young when he was hired as a Director? Lord i wish GSU had a young staff because them old buzzards need to retire, they bore me and many others and are stuck in time.

An experienced musician who has played saxophone for a host of celebrities to include Al Jarreau, Donald Harrison, Clark Terry, Nyoki, Cassandra Wilson, and Vivaca A. Fox has been named the Director of Bands at Fayetteville State University (FSU).

Rodney D. Chism, a native of Memphis, Tennessee, comes to FSU from Jackson State University (JSU) in Jackson, Mississippi where he served as Assistant Band Director/Chief Arranger of the renowned Sonic Boom of the South Marching Band and Director of the Jazz Ensemble. He was also founder of the JSU Saxophone Choir, pep band, and concert band. At FSU, Chism will be director of the Marching Bronco Express, FSU Pep Band, and FSU Concert Band.
