Tuskegee Exploring Division I?

True, let's say we get Langston to move up and a Tennessee State to leave the OVC or another SIAC school to move up ... then the SWAC can truly use a divisional scheduling format to greatly reduce traveling cost...

Let's say Langston would be in the SWAC West with the Texas schools, Louisiana schools and UA-Pine Bluff...

That would be (from closest to furthest, using Google Maps)
Langston to Pine Bluff: 390 miles/6 hours, 2 minutes (with tolls); 410 miles/6 hours, 10 minutes (without tolls)
Langston to Prairie View: 459 miles/6 hours, 56 minutes
Langston to Texas Southern: 487 miles/7 hours, 18 minutes
Langston to Grambling: 491 miles/7 hours, 21 minutes
Langston to Southern: 667 miles/10 hours, 6 minutes

The thing about Langston is it would open the SWAC to the OKC and Tulsa markets ... plus gives some flexibility scheduling neutral site games in places like Shreveport, Little Rock, Dallas-Fort Worth, Kansas City and St. Louis. If it's done right, a Langston move-up could possibly open up more Midwest markets to the conference. The trick with getting two additional teams would be finding the right target to put on the East side to balance those rotations.

Very True.......

I forgot to put that in my original post. Some of the further away schools like basically all the East schools would end up in some of those neutral site games and get exposed to new markets.

Some of us should be running the SWAC

Great post! Obviously TNSU would be the perfect fit for the east and the SWAC from a rivalry stand point.

Great post! Obviously TNSU would be the perfect fit for the east and the SWAC from a rivalry stand point.

Plus, Tennessee State would add another crucial media market for the SWAC...

This current round of conference expansion has more to do with markets and sponsorship deals than competition. Looking at the TV markets our member schools are in, it breaks down like this…
Six of the 10 SWAC members play in a top 100 TV market

School(s)/TV Market/Market rank
Texas Southern & Prairie View A&M: Houston (10)
Arkansas-Pine Bluff: Little Rock-Pine Bluff (56)
Alabama A&M: Huntsville-Decatur (84)
Jackson State: Jackson, MS (90)
Southern: Baton Rouge (95)
Alabama State: Montgomery-Selma (118)
Grambling State: Monroe-El Dorado (136)

NOTE: determine what market would Alcorn and Mississippi Valley State be considered located in

Markets SWAC teams frequent(ed) (market size in parentheses):
Dallas-Fort Worth – State Fair Classic (5)
Houston – SWAC Championship (10)
St. Louis – Gateway Classic (21)
Indianapolis – Circle City Classic (25)
Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne – SWAC/MEAC Challenge (19)
Birmingham – Magic City Classic (40)
Memphis – Southern Heritage Classic (48)
New Orleans – Bayou Classic (53)
Mobile-Pensacola (60)
Shreveport (84)

Potential members and market size
Tennessee State: Nashville (29)
Langston: Oklahoma City (45) ... being in a unique position (only football FCS school in Oklahoma if they move up) in a market that size and possibly Tulsa, Langston could find resources and sponsors to help them get over that hump

Now Langston would also give the SWAC ins to the Tulsa market (61); plus opening up some possibilities in playing in Kansas City (31) and those other listed markets from the earlier post.

Information regarding media market size comes from http://www.stationindex.com/tv/tv-markets

Langston would be smart to play their home games vs Grambling and SU in OKC, and possibly a second SWAC or SLC foe. I would like to see both Langston and TNSU in the SWAC, because they both bring something unique to the conference both are fiesty football programs

Looks like FCS Conference expansion is a hot topic again.

UNA - Univ of N AL is trying to get into the OVC and has been trying to get in for the last 5 to 6 years now and it looks like Jax'ville State wants them in as well.

Sounds as if Jax'ville State will lobby for TUNA to get in during the OVC meetings over the next couple of weeks.

“The most popular spectator sport in America is football,â€￾ Benson said. “They stated unequivocally that they are a basketball conference.â€￾

He also said the OVC is considering bringing in a Division II school, North Alabama, into the conference, which also has less stringent academic requirements and possibly does little to enhance the conference’s profile.

I'm not sure how the landscape will change when the power conferences branch out or flat out leave the NCAA but it will most definitely change.

Power conferences in autonomy talks

I have major love for the SWAC and my HBCU brethren but I don't see how the SWAC benefits TNSU.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In the first year of moving its football championship and basketball tournament to Houston, the Southwestern Athletic Conference announced today that it received a significant increase in attendance for both events.

The football championship and basketball tournament combined, including events sponsored by the SWAC during the week, totaled 87,492 in attendance. The basketball tournament numbers increased 23 percent from the previous year reaching 45,390. The attendance from the tournament games totaled 33,836, receiving an increase of more than 12,000 from last year.

In regards to the economic impact on the Houston metropolitan area, the football championship game was estimated at $44 million and the basketball tournament at more than $3.5 million.

The football championship game attendance jumped into the record books ranking third all time at 38,985. The attendance ranked 29 out of 44 NCAA Division I FBS and FCS combined conference championships and bowl games. For the FCS games attended across the nation in 2013, it ranked sixth overall, joining five other SWAC match ups listed in the top 12.

Also, SWAC Football Championship outdrew the Advocare 100 Bowl (Shreveport Indy Bowl), the Mountain West championship game, the Conference USA championship game, MAC Championship, and other smaller bowl games featuring FBS teams. If you follow the link, the PDFs are there.... but ... here are the other PDFs with the data below

Maybe TNSU will stop seeing a 60-70% drop in attendance in conference games after their OOC HBCU schedule

This is what their home attendance looked like without an HBCU:

SEMO 7,374
EIU 22,157 (I am guessing homecoming)
APSU 5,258
MSU 6,412

 :emlaugh:

(It's obvious they're fans aren't interested in that Tomfoolery)

People keep getting excited over these d2 schools playing with no rules moving up.

And only thinking of 1 sport.....

There are many other sports they will have to play in a D1 conference, can they support those teams and Title IX.

You really need to go sit down somewhere. Who are you to tell anyone what they can debate on a message board. You are an embarrassment to anything that is common sense. If you don't like the conversation or take issue with it simply ignore it Einstein. :emlaugh:

Amen! I guess Tulane and Stanford should drop down to FCS. Lol.

I agree. I have always respected Tennessee State and their program. I think it's awesome for an HBCU to be outside of the SWAC and MEAC.

We like to put lipstick on a pig in the SWAC. We seem to be so happy about attendance numbers rather than what we produce on the field and the classroom. Stay out of this pot!

I would vote against both Langston and Skegee joining. As much as I don't like Tenn State, atleast they bring something to the table. I don't see how Skegee or Langston benefits the SWAC any.

You don't know much about Tuskegee academic performances and their history do you?

Proper planning will get them in the SWAC. If they come aboard, the East will have another Bama contender every year. Tuskegee recruits well and has a respected alumni base who won't let them enter the SWAC unprepared.

Like he really has any say about it. :smh: Clearly you really don't know anything about their financial situation or what it takes to move up.

Academics are one thing, but it has nothing o do with improving the sports profile of the conference. Most of that talent you are salivating over at skegee would be ineligible at fcs level. They would have Apr issues from day 1.

You right there isn't any benefit for them to move to the SWAC. Dr. Glover shut that idea down last year. Also the OVC isnt a bad conference to be in (they are a well ran conference IMO) not to mention most of the OVC schools are in TN. I keep telling people here that you are missing much from not being in the SWAC.

Skegee is a walking violation but most schools in the SWAC are so it might not make a difference with the way rules are changing everyday....

They are definitely saving on travel for their non-revenue sports by playing in the OVC vs the SWAC or MEAC. However they make their money by playing HBCUs exclusively in football OOC.

Skegee would not add to the conference competition-wise and will hurt us more in APR.

True to me they have the bet of both worlds they play most of the OOC against HBCU to appease their fan base and their conference games are against pretty good teams which has made them a force within their conference. I would love for JSU or any SWAC school to have it football wise like Tenn State. Now as far as everything else I think JSU is has a bigger advantage.

Which is why they won their last conference championship 15 years ago?
