I think they are up to something but don't know exactly what. There was probably a reason they tested the waters with 4 FCS teams last year. Who knows? :lol: :emlaugh: It's a conspiracy (just felt like saying that). :lol: :emlaugh:
 
With Langston they only upside that I see is that it will give the SWAC the Oklahoma area. Last report that I seen is that they have a 2.4 million dollar athletic budget with 900,000 going towards football. They would have to add baseball and women's soccer. That athletic budget is going to have to atleast double to make them competitive in the SWAC. Yes they can compete with the SWAC now when they can recruit players that wouldn't be eligible in the SWAC and don't have to worry about APR. It would benefit them being that they are not only the only HBCU in the state but they would be the only FCS in the state. Another negative is that Langston is not a skip and hop like most SWAC schools. Langston is 400 miles from is closet SWAC school being UAPB and is 814 miles from Bama St.

All very valid points......Langston might be a better fit for the Southland Conference geographically.

Jags, I know Tuskegee has somewhat of a presence in South Louisiana. SU will just have to step up and recruit and compete harder. Increased competition makes better (Like how WCW pushed the WWF at the time to be better). Actually, the SWAC could use some increased competition to make us better. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

I guess that burden would be more on Langston since they would have to travel at least 4-5 times each season. Not a big deal for our schools since we would only make 1 trip out there every 2 years.

If they are up to something, it may be worth it to travel that extra mile to SWAC schools monetarily rather than the SLC
 
Perhaps there aren't any good fits for a SWAC expansion unless the conference would allow it first PWC members in.

NWST, SELA, Jacksonville State and possibly Delta State.......
 



I spent four days at a meeting on Tuskegee Campus last week. According to the leaders in Tuskegee, they will not be going to D1. This is what the coach would like, but it is not going to happen. While on campus, I attempted to make a reservation for our two buses, because it is going to be very difficult to get a parking space on Sep 6, when we play at TU. The stadium nor the campus will be able to hold the crowd, but fans are still going to the game. TU, ALST, AAMU and Miles College played for the Alabama Championship during my college days. Anytime these schools get together we will draw a crowd. TU will not go D1 in our lifetime.

Perhaps schools like Bethune Cookman and Hampton Institute braintrust are just substantially ahead of TU relating to growing athletics......Bethune Cookman and TU looks similar in size but perhaps have different priorities.......

I said this the moment they hired Garrett (don't know if he will be there for the long haul but he got them going in the right direction). The Miller hire was just icing on the cake. They aren't making these moves to stay at D2 (I know they just moved up this year).

And I didn't know that they were the only HBCU in Oklahoma. Being in a metro area of 1.25 million into the fold would make them an attractive add (but as I said they just became D2 so it could be a few years before this move happens).

It seems like everyone knows someone at TU that says this move ain't happening. I talked to a couple of TU people as well and they said it ain't happening :lol:

If the SWAC bring in an additional member, we should look at the MEAC or SLC format of scheduling, it will greatly cut down on travel cost, because if we go to a 10 game mandate, it would be beyond stupid!

The SWAC doesn't have to look at anybody format. They created the format.

True, let's say we get Langston to move up and a Tennessee State to leave the OVC or another SIAC school to move up ... then the SWAC can truly use a divisional scheduling format to greatly reduce traveling cost...

Let's say Langston would be in the SWAC West with the Texas schools, Louisiana schools and UA-Pine Bluff...

That would be (from closest to furthest, using Google Maps)
Langston to Pine Bluff: 390 miles/6 hours, 2 minutes (with tolls); 410 miles/6 hours, 10 minutes (without tolls)
Langston to Prairie View: 459 miles/6 hours, 56 minutes
Langston to Texas Southern: 487 miles/7 hours, 18 minutes
Langston to Grambling: 491 miles/7 hours, 21 minutes
Langston to Southern: 667 miles/10 hours, 6 minutes

The thing about Langston is it would open the SWAC to the OKC and Tulsa markets ... plus gives some flexibility scheduling neutral site games in places like Shreveport, Little Rock, Dallas-Fort Worth, Kansas City and St. Louis. If it's done right, a Langston move-up could possibly open up more Midwest markets to the conference. The trick with getting two additional teams would be finding the right target to put on the East side to balance those rotations.
 
I would vote against both Langston and Skegee joining. As much as I don't like Tenn State, atleast they bring something to the table. I don't see how Skegee or Langston benefits the SWAC any.
