Mobile produced most draft picks per capita in last 3 NFL drafts

Scout.com's Jamie Newberg crunched the numbers of the last three drafts and discovered that Mobile is the best area in the country, per capita, at producing players drafted in the NFL. Newberg used a radius of 90 to 120 minutes around Mobile and calculated the population at 726,000 people. That area produced nine draft picks in the last three drafts, which equates to a per capita score of 12.4

In the last three drafts, players like Tampa Bay Bucaneers safety Mark Barron (taken with seventh pick in 2012 draft), San Diego Chargers offensive lineman D.J. Fluker (taken with 11th pick in 2013 draft) and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback AJ McCarron (taken in 5th round of 2014 draft) all came from the Mobile region.

South Georgia and Miami Dade-County had the second and third best per capita numbers, respectively.

As a state, Alabama ranked ninth in the country with 23 draft picks over the last three years. Not surprisingly, Florida, California and Texas, in that order, produced the most NFL draft picks during that time frame

Do you think the majority of them are playing college ball in Mississippi or in other states?

Other states. State has put a couple of home grown players the past few years but other than that, most of them are leaving Mississippi.


Off topic kind of but as I said above, we had this year in the playoffs Canaan, Jefferson, Ellis and Mo Williams (sure I left off one or two)

Most of our basketball talent goes out of state. Devin Booker just signed with Kentucky, now waiting to see where #1 player in the nation for next year Malik Newman signs. I hope he picks Mississippi State.

Same with Louisiana. The past couple of Louisiana's Mr. Basketball have gone out-of-state. I believe this year Louisiana's Mr. Basketball signed with Alcorn, which is odd. LSU does a pretty good job in recruiting Louisiana's top football athletes.
