SWAC APR

The Clown Prince of Crime
I was just thinking, student-athletes have to stay on the road a lot. They miss a lot of class and some instructors are so ignorant, they will still flunk the kid even though they are performing a school function. I'm sure many hotels have internet access in 2014.

Would it be beneficial for our schools to offer more online undergraduate degree majors? I think in the SWAC's case, this would definitely put the SWAC in a position to improve APR?

Re: Can Offering More Online Degrees Help the SWAC's APR Situation?

It might improve it by a small degree....MIGHT but the real issue is people just aren't graduating on time. Like with bama state, why do you not offer summer classes for student-athletes? Also bh, coming from a student, it is more difficult to have online classes than to go to a class-room in my opinion. I avoid online classes let alone try to get an online degree simply because you have to make up for not being in the class with a shit load of work!

Re: Can Offering More Online Degrees Help the SWAC's APR Situation?

if there is a demand. don't want universities become wasteful with limited funds; maybe, but the university must establish proper support systems that provides the necessary resources to assist a student-athletic to be academically successful if there are complications.

" The Division of Athletics promotes an "Academics First" philosophy and strongly encourages student-athletes to understand that they are students first. The athletic administration, coaching staff, AAEC staff, and the student-athletes work together with the university as a whole to promote and ensure "One JSU" as evidenced by successful academic outcomes of the student-athlete population." - Jackson State University

Graduating on time has almost nothing to do with APR calculations in a given year. You can have all your SRs graduate and still have issues because of underclassmen who had grade issues or transferred out or left due to financial or family issues.

They both matter....thanks.

Re: Can Offering More Online Degrees Help the SWAC's APR Situation?

Graduating is good for the GSR... for APR it has a minimal role in the calculation.

Since you represent a school that are repeat offenders when it comes to apr issues, Im going to take the high road and take your word for it. You are right Almighty jag fo lyfe!

I graduated and I have read the NCAA info on this. Read it for yourself and stop being so comfortably uninformed.

Why not take the honest road and admit that you don't know what you're talking about? :noidea:

Knowledge is power and from the comments on this board I have to concede some of our schools aren't doing a very good job at that.

SWAC Fires Back on APR Penalties

Six member schools from the Southwestern Athletic Conference will be banned from postseason competition in several sports in the 2015-16 academic season, thanks to Academic Progress Rate penalties announced this week by the NCAA. But conference officials and member presidents today responded to the NCAA’s sanctions, asserting that APR guidelines are imbalanced for institutions with limited academic development resources.

In a release, Texas Southern University President and SWAC Council of Presidents Chairman John Rudley criticized the NCAA for holding historically Black colleges and other limited resource institutions to similar standards for BCS and power conference Division I schools with higher budgets for compliance and academic development.

“The average graduation rate for all students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) is 36 percent. The NCAA’s APR requiring a graduation rate for student athletes of 50 percent or better is set so high that most HBCU’s and other limited resource institutions cannot meet that standard.”

“The large, well-funded universities have hired large compliance staffs who literally escort athletes to class each day to meet the increased requirements. Our smaller institutions are severely handicapped without budgets to hire personnel for compliance and academic support. These increased regulations make it almost impossible for small schools with specialized missions to compete.”

“We are proud of what our Historically Black Colleges and Universities have achieved over the years, before and after segregation, with respect to transforming the lives of people of color and providing access to a college degree for under served students when others have not had such a mission. This is a case of one size cannot fit all, and the NCAA needs to continue to look for ways to ensure that the needs of all its member universities and our student athletes can be met.”

The following schools will be barred from postseason competition next year:

Alabama A&M (Men’s Golf)
Alabama State (Men’s Basketball and Football)
Mississippi Valley State (Baseball and Football)
Southern (All sports based on unusable data)
Prairie View A&M (Football)
Arkansas at Pine Bluff (Football)

I guess we can hire some folks to do their homework for them.

…..

A group of football players were involved in a cheating scandal with tutors at Florida State University.

In 2007, several football players at Florida State were discovered to be in a cheating ring with two tutors who were providing them answers to online tests, according to ESPN.

As the scandal unfolded, a total of 61 athletes (25 of them football players) were found to have been involved.

One tutor was accused of typing papers for players and giving them answers to quizzes, while the other was said to have given out answers for the online tests.

…..

Tutors for the basketball team at the University of Minnesota admitted they had written hundreds of papers for players.

In 1999, a former basketball manager for the University of Minnesota basketball team revealed she had written more than 400 papers for 20 players, both current and former, according to Sports Illustrated.

Two other tutors later came forward and said they were also involved. Four players were suspended as a result, according to SI.

CNN analysis: Some college athletes play like adults, read like 5th-graders

…..

When Willingham worked as a learning specialist for athletes from 2003 to 2010, she admits she took part in cheating, signing her name to forms that said she witnessed no NCAA rules violations when in fact she did. But the NCAA, the college sports organizing body, never interviewed her. Instead, it found no rules had been broken at Chapel Hill.

UNC now says 120 reforms put in place ensure there are no academic transgressions.

But Willingham said fake classes were just a symptom of the bigger problem of enrolling good athletes who didn't have the reading skills to succeed at college.

"Isn't it all cheating if I'm sitting at a table with a kid who can't read or write at college level and pulling a paper out of them? Is this really legitimate? No," Willingham told CNN. "I wouldn't do that today with a college student; I only did it with athletics, because it's necessary."

NCAA sports are big business, with millions of dollars at stake for winning programs.

I thought they were not offering to pay for summer classes for student athletes. Any student that is in good standing can enroll in summer school as long as they pay for it.

Re: Can Offering More Online Degrees Help the SWAC's APR Situation?

Many FBS institutions offer a General Studies degree program that facilitate the retention and graduation of their athletes.

There is even some FCS (Swac) schools that offer that mess too......

Re: Can Offering More Online Degrees Help the SWAC's APR Situation?

technically, PV had the passing APR score but one bad year in 2010 dropped the average to the point where it's hard to catch up.....

that's how alot of Southland schools can get transfers in some SWAC schools can't get straight with general studies...I know of a situation right now two players who were major contributors on one SWAC team begged to play for another but their JUCO transcripts failed to line up with the school they wanted to attend....as a result, they were forced to go where the degree lines up with

Re: Can Offering More Online Degrees Help the SWAC's APR Situation?

Let's just be honest with ourselves. Our students need to go to class and graduate. It seems that our institutions want to blame x, y, and z. Yet, fail to acknowledge the mistakes of A...which is the student. Furthermore, this is not a HBCU problem but a university problem PERIOD. Students, coaches, and university administrators see dollar signs.

Also, having worked in a compliance office at an SEC school, the larger schools have their problems as well. Athletes, coaches, and administrators pay heavily in order to get their student athletes to pass. I know five instructors who receive season press box tickets for football games at three SEC schools. It's all about the $$$$ at the end of the day.

Honestly, it will be difficult to resolve this problem.

Re: Can Offering More Online Degrees Help the SWAC's APR Situation?

this is what we resort to....we want a coach to win games but your better athletes ain't thinking about class...so you get those guys in and they kill your program but coach is still fired

you get academic all-americans who can't run fast but they go class, post high APRs but lose games....your still gone as a coach (Anthony Jones)

what's your solution?

The P5 conferences basically are cheating...alot of these athletes are technically not enrolled at the schools...they're under a "in-house" JUCO taking classes under the school umbrella as they're admitted "as a special admit"...the better athletes can leave early now and not get hit with APR points....they'll also string along a academic minded walk-on for 2 years and offer him a scholarship for his final 2 years to boost numbers

BINGO! Especially the part in red.

If you don't value education - on line or in person, it does not matter.

Re: Can Offering More Online Degrees Help the SWAC's APR Situation?

Just being real, all this sounds like excuses. They can take they azz to class just like we did and pass.

NO MORE EXCUSES

I'm tired of all the excuses the SWAC makes for not reaching APR goals, especially in a year like this, when 3 of the top 5 athletic departments with biggest budgets fail to make the grades. If Grambling, Jackson State and Alcorn can do it, there is no reason why the rest of the conference can't do it, because all the others have to do is follow the models at JSU or Grambling. Grambling faced APR issues in Men's basketball, so we purchased a system that tracks every student athlete class attendance and coaches are required to do classroom checks. JSU applied and received an NCAA grant to booster their compliance staff. It's time for the SWAC to stand firm and send a message, GET IT RIGHT OR GET OUT, because we need to stop whining in letters and news articles about unfairness and of step up to the plate !
