Props to Riley for getting on the kid. But we all know we have seen this before with all our schools. Kids sign and never show or don't get the grade to get in. You know there is a reason none of the La schools or even JSU didn't offer the kid. Not saying the kid can't play even if he had to modify his game for his height in college. But you can't tell me every D1 BB coach in La passed on this kid who was a MVP kid. You don't think SE La or NW LA State coaches knew about this kid?

Why didn't Coach Brent offer him? Or Grambling's coach? Surely with their improving squad they could have used him. I wish the kid luck and Alcorn as well. I will not say SU had no use for him. But something about the kid drew no interest from Coach Banks and his staff for them not to offer or they had all their offers on the table to other folks. Just saying. It would not be the first time a coach passed on a kid. Now it is up to the kid to show all the schools who did pass on him, that they made a mistake. Nothing more or nothing less.

I agree with you. I highlighted the statement above because it was mentioned earlier that SU had no use for him. I see nothing wrong if Banks has his eyes on different players.

I'm glad you understand. If you all don't have any offseason issues, I expect Bama st to challenge for the top spot.
 



The kid seems to be hungry and humble (a lethal combination). I think he will do well where ever he plays. Also, he may not be finish growing. If the kid went to Alexandria and beat Peabody in January, he can ball. You don't go to Peabody and win without being able to ball.........Just doesn't happen.
 
Being from North LA, I'm surprised no1 gave him an offer. It's amazing how a kid averages 32 pts a game can't fit any1's system. Richwood has put together a good program. Not sure why the regional SWAC teams aren't looking into them.

Reginal Johnson Sr. wanted to create a monster.

That is, a monster on the basketball court.

He felt he accomplished that in his son Reginal Johnson Jr., who signed with Alcorn State on April 16.

"I didn't have a dad in my life to tell me you need to play defense, block out, rebound," Johnson Sr. said. "I thought I just needed to shoot.

"Well I got a rude awakening when I got in the military and learned you have to do more than that. What I did was make sure that everything I didn't have, I was going to make sure my son had. And so I'd put all that together and create a monster."

A Monroe, La., native, the younger Johnson averaged 32 points and 15 rebounds for Richwood High School, helping his team to a Class 3A runner-up finish, and was chosen as Mr. Basketball in Louisiana. He earned two Class 3A MVPs and also played on the Nike D1 circuit.

But despite the numbers, accolades and his physical game, mid- to high-major college coaches questioned where he'd fit on the court. At 6-foot-31/2, 230-pounds, Johnson Jr. played mostly forward.

"A lot of college coaches that I've talked to at the mid-major level basically said they love him as a player and what he brings to the court, but nobody seems to really know what position he is," said Andrew Lopez, recruiting writer for NOLA Media Group.

"When I wrote about him in the end of the season, I basically said I don't think I need a position for him right now. I just know he's a basketball player. He's going to win basketball games.

"Is he going to be able to defend a perimeter player at the next level? That's yet to be seen. He's going to hold his own against anyone in the post. But when you're going against post players that are 6-6, 6-7, that's a bigger question."

Lopez said Johnson Jr. has averaged a double-double in high school in the last three seasons.

Braves coach Luther Riley said he sees Johnson Jr. playing small forward.

"When he went down the middle and dunked on two people, it was amazing," Riley said. "He's a physical player."

Johnson Jr. said he chose Alcorn among offers from Arkansas-Monticello and LSU-Alexandria. The proximity to home, as well as opportunity to contribute immediately to the Braves, factored in his decision.

At basketball games, Johnson Sr. and his wife had shirts that said "Monsta Daddy" and "Monsta Momma."

"I just felt like I could help a lot," Johnson Jr. said. "I'm very family-oriented. So I love to see my family there for support."

There lies the possibility of not receiving a lot of offers. Maybe he is too large for his height or too short for his size and position. Most teams now look for 6'7" forwards.

Yeah those are the ones. Tre Lynch and Bryce Clark were transfers into SU. Only playing this year. Mitchell, Johnson and Miller were players that will have the most impact. Mostly Miller. Mitchell was not himself this year with the earlier heart issue. Johnson was always a decent role player but could get hot here and there. Streaky. Miller did not find his groove as a starter like he did as a 6th man but he will definitely be missed. We had about 3 players sitting out this year that should be ready to go next season. Plus Godfrey, Hyder and Banks will all be back as starter.

That's a good start to having another great team.
 
To be fair, let's just say Monsta is 6-4, 220. We know how schools fudge the heights and weight. But 6-4 has been consistent for him...

Also, Louisiana's best high school player didn't even play in Louisiana this season. Craig Victor left St. Aug to go play his senior year at Findlay Prep out in Vegas. He signed with Arizona. In a sense, Monsta won Mr. Basketball by default because Craig Victor wasn't in Louisiana. BTW, Craig Victor is ranked No. 31 nationally and No. 5 power forward by ESPN.

One more thing: Louisiana's Mr. Basketball or Gatorade Boys' Player of the Year winners have been let's say about 60/40 going to LSU. Now Big Baby, Brandon Bass and Tasmin Mitchell, that LSU run on those guys was all because of Butch Pierre.
