Southern coach Roger Cador prefers forfeit to makeup for Texas Southern Game

The Southern University baseball team is scheduled to return to Houston to play a makeup doubleheader against Texas Southern on May 9.

But Jaguars coach Roger Cador said he’s prepared to forfeit the games to save the expenses of a trip that isn’t in the budget and avoid the strain on players who will be taking final exams that week. Additionally, the makeup date is the same as the university’s commencement.

Southern and Texas Southern played just one of three scheduled games in Houston last month because of rain. The Southwestern Athletic Conference has a “100 percent rule,†which requires that all divisional games be played.

“We don’t have the money,†Cador said. “Just the bus is $3,000. You’re looking at $1,600 or so for a hotel and another $1,000 or so for food. So you’re talking about another five or six thousand dollars easy that you don’t have. That’s money I wish I had for recruiting.

If it won't make much of a difference whether the last place team makes it to the tourney, then so be it.

As far as the changing of these SWAC rules in MID-SEASON over and over, this is bush-league. Wait until the summer meetings and then bring the matter to a vote for the upcoming season. Don't just vote cause certain schools may be inconvenienced.

I remember one year we played a series against Alabama A&M late in the season Huntsville. One of the games ended up being rained out.

We lost the last game of the series. The Bulldogs coach goes over into our dugout after the game and tells our coach that if he wanted to make up the cancelled game (if we need it to secure the East division championship), he would have no problem with it. Salter declines the offer right there.

So, it happens, I guess.

I believe the rule was put in after the 2004 fiasco with PV and us. Got me a championship ring out of it.

A little off topic....I am impressed with the direction AAMU baseball is going in. They have made a huge leap since they came in the league.

how times have changed....PV didn't have to play the games in 2004 but did it as SU needed 70 percent..it rained the second day and SU stayed over to play 2 more games

the same day, TSU and Grambling State broker a deal at midfield and cut their series off at 2 games

I remember playing all 4 against Gram in both series. The first series, I pitched 3 of 4 games. Last series it was sunny and we had recruits there. I thought we played all 4, I could be wrong.

In 99 when I played baseball for Alcorn, we got rained out a lot of games. We were also first place in the east. We tried to make up games but Valley wouldnt play us and others just wasnt able to. However due to the fact we didnt play all division games, we were not allowed to participate in the tournament at the end of the season. They gave us the east division title but thats it. We beat anyone that year and that couldve been our year to win Alcorn's first title. Grambling beat JSU on an error by the 3rd baseman that year at Smith Will's Stadium in Jackson and won the title.

I remember folks saying Rat didn't want to make games up  . Or was that another year. But that's why they put the rule in place in the first place, because not all of these coaches have high character lol. Some would do anything to win or get in the tournament, like flood a field, so games can't be played :smh:

SU's Cador throwing the whole season away....

Southern lacks enough players to makeup DH at Texas Southern

The Southern baseball team will not play a makeup doubleheader against Texas Southern scheduled for May 8 in Houston because it won’t have enough players available.

When Southern failed to qualify for the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament that begins May 14, coach Roger Cador gave 10 players who are from other countries or have long distances to travel home permission to leave after final exams, which end May 7. The cost for the families to change the flights would be prohibitive, Cador said.

The SWAC was waiting until the completion of the regular-season this weekend to see if the makeups would be necessary. The Jaguars play a weekend series at Prairie View A&M.

If after this weekend the makeup games would have had the potential to affect second-place Texas Southern’s ability to catch first-place Arkansas-Pine Bluff or be caught by third-place Prairie View, the doubleheader would have to be made up.

“Whatever the conference decides to do,” Cador said. “We’ll just have to eat it.”

Earlier in the season, Cador said he was prepared to forfeit the games because the return trip to Houston would cost $5,000-$6,000 that wasn’t in the budget. But Cador said Tuesday that he was prepared to make the trip and pay for it with money he had saved for recruiting

They should be happy and celebrating for the added "W", because they rarely get see "W's" when they really do get to play someone. :emlaugh:

They need to be focusing on UAPB Men baseball team this weekend if they plan on winning at least the division in Baseball.

Current Situation in West

1) UAPB 14-6
2) TXSU 12-7

Here they go again.......

This is simply tunnel vision. If this was another school, you guys would be all over it, but since it's your own school, you'll try and shrug off the embarassment.
This is beyond embarassment. This is almost worse than su not having enough money to take it's women's team to the NIT.:smh:
