2014 Spring Practice Storylines: Southern Poised To Make Another Title Run

Well, I know football. In fact, I picked SU and Jackson to go to the SWAC title game after watching both teams get blown out by Houston and Tulane with my own eyes. Both teams were impressive at many times in the game. Anyone who knows football knows that the score doesn't always tell the story of a game.

Just know that you are talking to a person who knows SU's history very well and usually gives the Jags a punchers chance against non-BCS programs. Unlike many SWAC programs, SU is known letting that "SU spirit" take over, and having a "F_ck it" mentality when playing against bigger schools that helps them hang in or even win. Trust me, I have seen it in plenty of SU sports. I watched the NCAA Tourney game against Georgia Tech, I went to the SU vs LSU baseball game the year LSU was picked to win the CWS and got stunned, I went to the dome to watch SU put heat on Tulane"s last bowl winning football team. So believe me, I know how ya'll get down when ya'll have weapons to fight with and have always respected it.

However, anyone who knows football knows that the Jags are getting ready to walk into a crayfish boiling pot with extra cayenne pepper in Lafayette. ULL is not playing any games with SU! They are going to try to light up that scoreboard to start their season out with a bang. This is suppose to be "the year" for ULL. This team will be better than Houston. Mark it down.
I agree ULL will try to embarrass SU. They beat Nicholls St. 77-3 or something like that last season. But if Worms try's, SU can put up a fight. The key will be if SU can stop the run. If he opens the offense up, SU can score with anyone, to much talent not to.

That will play a big difference...He is known for doing that dumb stuff...smh

No sir. Going punch for punch with ULL is not what SU needs to do. SU needs to test ULL's defensive line. Hudspeth focuses on getting to the QB and trying to force picks. However, ULL rush defense is pretty sloppy. Their numbers weren't bad only because teams just didn't even try to run the ball on them. Orleans Darkwa of Tulane, (who had a horrible offensive line), ran all over them in the NOLA Bowl and exposed their lack of fundamentals. SU has some decent size on their offensive line. I think SU needs to focus on running that clock and keeping Broadway in his returning offensive lineman off the field.

If Broadway is hit, he stops looking at the WR's and looks at the rush. I saw him do it in Hs and in college. He that in the Tulane game, but SU doesn't have Tulane's DB's either. SU needs to play to it's strength.

Some of you su folks have very short memories. Over the last several years su has played D-1 schools, they've been blasted, yet you come back time and time again thinking something different's gone happen the next time.

Because SU is just that sorry. The gameplan and playcalling in the game in BR was horrific, too, but y'all are garbage, bruh. LOL. Our record was inflated due to how sorry the SWAC is. I'm not sure exactly how we won as many games with the worst Turnover ratio in the conference.....wait I do know....The SWAC is terrible. I think Alcorn is the only school that didn't make a coaching change this year that shouldn't be concerned with the direction of their program.

Truth be told, Comegy should've been fired years ago. A decent coach, with the talent we had in 2010-2013 would've beat the breaks off of all y'all. Thank goodness the administration recognized it and got rid of him. He's Valley's problem now.

Frat. Your first statement negates everything you just typed after that. Do yourself a favor and stop posting like TP or I will question your football knowledge.

Just saying. Lol

I told yall at the beginnging of the year. Nobody in the SWAC was worth writing home about. Truth hurts. However, somebody had to win the conference. I wasn't impressed with what I saw on the field from SU.....from the UH game to the SCG. But we'll see how Big Worm follows that up this year. I've already addressed the issues I've had with the previous JSU staff earlier in this thread, and I think we've fixed that problem.

I'm looking forward to this upcoming season. :D

But I thought...... Wait....never mind.

Coach has got to understand this is a pride thing and will go far in recruiting. This game is being played in a strong Southern University footprint. I don't care if we lose but we have to have a respectable showing. There will be over 40,000 people in that stadium and a ton of those people will be expecting S.U. to show up. I agree, we have got to keep the ball out of Broadway's hands. We have got to call a good offensive game and move the chains. We also have to find a way to get to Broadway and rattle him. This is a HUGE game for multiple reasons and we can't be half stepping. This game will have the very same amount of fans and environment as the New Orleans Bowl had. The Louisiana media is going to be all over this game. You have the 2nd and 3rd largest fan bases among Louisiana college football squaring off. It is a long holiday weekend and folks will be coming home to see this one.

I was impressed with certain things from Southern and Jackson in their games against Houston and Tulane.

I do agree that the conference was pretty ugly last season.

Spring football is winding down for Southern.

The Jaguars held a walkthrough Friday afternoon in the parking lot next to A.W. Mumford Stadium to preserve the wet field for the spring game at 2 p.m. Saturday inside the stadium.

The 70-75-play spring game will be a little more than half the length of a scrimmage last Saturday and will conclude the spring session. The Jaguars have managed to avoid any serious injuries over the last 3½ weeks and coach Dawson Odums would like to keep it that way.

He said the team has accomplished what he set out to accomplish and now he wants to finish on a positive and healthy note.

“That’s the number one goal; we’re just trying to get through spring ball healthy.

“We want to end on a positive note. There should be some signs of getting better. I think we’ve been doing that so I’m looking forward to guys continuing that execution (Saturday).”

I am telling you SU people right now, you are getting a F'n beast in Renaldo Thomas. I watched this dude in high school and at a few workouts at the Saints facility. If ya'll can keep his head on straight, (which is something CJ couldn't do at Tulane), this kid will be playing on Sundays. He is a NFL bound defensive player. He should be the best defensive player on your team. There is a reason why he was a 3 star DB out of high school and had offers from Michigan, Arkansas, Oklahoma State and Houston. He will be an All SWAC player easily. Please quote me on this.

He will be aside of McDuffie in the secondary. :read:

I don't know, the kid from Florida is really good. But Thomas has been Willie Quinn-Ed  . Thomas has the potential to be really good though.

You all excited about Willie Quinn.. do you know that in Houston, JSU was running a newly installed defense? Our players were constantly out of position. We didn't have a DC who taught zone. That is how we lost to UAPB in the SCG on the last UAPB series. Had he tried to teach zone the rest of the 8 years he had been at JSU, we might have won a few more games. We are going to run a man defense this year but our DC is STILL teaching zone and plenty of it. We complained for 8 seasons about running a zone and they waited until their last game to REALLY use it. :smh: Even when we were 5-1 in Comegy's first year, we tried to tell that staff that an all man defense would not work in the SWAC.. then they went to Grambling and learned the hard way.. LOL They did make a few adjustments along the way but not many. We could NEVER get our DC to stop playing man on 3rd and forever.

Can't wait to see ole Willie in Jackson.

Stop harassing su and let them be proud lmaooooo...willie is a good slot receiver and he gets by with his speed, I feel that he is nowhere close to being scary tho. As long as the qb can't deliver the ball, it does not matter who you have out there at WR lol. To stop a potent passing attack you must first stop the passer. I cannot wait until they hit the jack.

That is true. But the caveat is Deonte Shorts/Francis Kennah is NOT Dray Joseph. Well, they won't be the passer Dray was, but they will be more mobile than Dray. Also, we probably won't ask Shorts/Kennah to go out there and wins games per se as we did with Dray. There's enough skill guys to spread the ball around offensively until either QB emerges as the true No. 1 guy.

The Southern-Jackson game will be great as always.

Lol @ tP

dude you do know Willie "burned" Cox in A.W. there's evidence on the net where's COX is 'behind' Willie LOL...Let's not open up this can folk...

Just sit tight...
