2014 Spring Practice Storylines: Southern Poised To Make Another Title Run

Southern wasn’t supposed to compete for a SWAC championship last season.

But they won the SWAC West and then upset Jackson State in the conference title game.

The defending champs head into the 2014 season with the expectation to repeat the unexpected the success they achieved in 2013.

“Our theme this whole spring is your ‘get to’ versus your ‘go to,’ which really works the mindset,†Odums said prior to the opening of spring camp. “The difference is, you say, ‘I get to go to practice and get better today. I get to go to class and get better today,’ not that ‘I’ve got to go, so I’m just going to go and not do what I’m really supposed to do.’’

Ya'll went 4-7, including losing 5 out of their last 6 to end 2012. In the middle of that season, the school fired Stump and replaced him with Worm, who had little head coaching experience. A coach Jaguar nation wasn't sold on.

So you tell me based on that, Southern was expected to win the SWAC last year?

Even based on that, you still can't assume that SU wasn't supposed to compete for a Conference title regardless of what happened in 2012. You take each season as it comes.

Just my take on it.

Well Southern won't compete for the WEST this year. Too many teams have made upgrades, and they will spend the whole year chasing PV after the early season loss to PV in Houston. Remember, SU does not have a QB so a shoot-out with PV won't be pretty.
 
Ugh, we are not winning anything this year. No QB, No WRs. Our defense may finish last in the SWAC. No pass rush, and only 2 starters return at the LB spot and DB spot.

Well, part of the headline reads "Southern Poised To Make Another Title Run". Is that slanted too?

Whether you're joking or not, you are correct. Nothing more needs to be said because in addition to that, I know that defense will still have huge deficits and holes in it.
 
Pretty much everyone has gotten better...but nobody is shook by other schools hires, coaches, or recruits. 2014 will be one for the books!!! Get ready to compete folks!
 
So SU will be eligible for the title Game? Last I checked all SU teams was ineligible for post season play
 
We're kicking all of your behinds next year. Hear me now and believe me later. I look for Alcorn, AAMU and PV to give us a little resistance. I suspect Alcorn or AAMU will play against S.U. in the Championship game........I am leaning towards Alcorn being our opponent though.
