NCAA Tournament ............ UPSET CITY so far!!

I've never considered Memphis a mid major. Going back to the Hardaway days (and before then), Memphis has stayed ranked. It's just that in this day and age, the talking heads at ESPN want to label them that because they don't play in the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 or SEC.

Gonzaga is not a mid-major anymore. When you have done what they have done for 10-15 years (#1 seeds and ranking, Sweet 16/Elite 8 runs) you can't label them that. If Butler can get back on their feet they will be in that same boat. VCU is trending that way as well since 2007.

While many believe the term "mid-major" was originally coined by the sports media in order to distinguish between BCS and non-BCS conference teams, it was actually coined in 1977 (more than two decades before the development of the BCS) by Jack Kvancz, head coach of Catholic University's men's basketball team.[1]

None of them are BCS conference schools. Some might be elite basketball schools, though. SMU has never been consider a major college basketball school.

The way conferences have realigned has scewed that. But we should know who the basketball powers are. That never changes regardless of conference affiliation.

I hear ya, but the fact still remains that a SWAC, MEAC, Southland, A-Sun type school beating a team out of C-USA, AAC, Sun Belt or the MWC is still considered a win over a major program.

The Sun Belt don't have major basketball schools in that conference. Never did.

I don't think even ESPN sees Memphis as a mid-major. Memphis was a perennial power, contesting for Final Four appearances regularly. They got hampered by violating the rules, but still has come back. Nobody is surprised when Memphis goes to a Final Four. Memphis lacks for nothing that would keep it from keeping up with any other school from any other conference. Mid-majors are limited.

I think they consider the AAC as one... or at least on par with the A10 (or how the MVC was for a while) but more top heavy. With Tulane and Charlotte coming in this year that won't help that perception.

Everything else I agree with.

I don't know how. They were in the Final Four last year and went unbeaten this season.

True, but nobody picked them to return to the Final Four this year even though they went undefeated. Hell most picked them to lose against UK, in the second round.

That's just how Kentucky plays on offense. They drive to the basket relentlessly hoping to draw fouls.

First #1 seed goes down. UK vs Louisville will be a monster game. The whole state of Kentucky will be on edge.
