SWAC's postseason basketball decisions have it backwards -- as usual

sending the regular season champ is the best scenario. the fact that the ncaa guarantees the reg season champ a spot in the nit if they loose in the conf tourney provides incentive to play the tourney. so if your going to have a conf tourney hold it in the gym of the regular season champ, provided they can host an event of that size... lol, but yall know, some of our gyms we really don't want on tv.

What if the regular season champ isn't decided until the last game of the season? How do you orchestrate the travel and hotel situation for all the schools involved come tourney time?

The bigger problem of what city should host the tournament is that-that city be within an equal amount of driving time between all SWAC schools, but that city must be a large enough city to give you your basic needs. So, I pose the question, which city among all others make sense to host the games. We've done B'ham, Gulfport, Garland and now we are in Houston with its 5+million metro area and there's still bickering. I definitely liked the rotation years ago even when it came through Montgomery and other cities. I don't think any of us will be 100% satisfied, but where ever the tournament is held the money have to roll in a lot better than in past years. I guess it's obvious that the game may remain in Houston for years and maybe it will grow over those years. It's one thing that all of us know on this board and that is "black folks" can only afford to travel so far, because of the gargantuan problems in the communities that has caught many of our people.

Time Out, Did anyone catch this cat talking about how poor our total School academic standards are? While y'all screaming attendance (Like We Are The Worse), This cat just said we don't belong in DI... Really, in with it all we talking about attendance? really... Houston worked us a Deal, the Swac will make a Cut of a Dozen parties (a quick 100k), People not going to the Game, just like they not going to the Conference USA championships, Or The WAC Championship, How about the OVC, Southern. Attendance isn't going to be High at Games in the Pac 12 not involving Arizona. You Think someone coming to the Sunbelt tournament in New Orleans?

This Dude just Trashed our Schools in we talking about attendance and who Belongs..

by the last few games of the season the possibilities have been narrowed down to 2 teams. at most 3. it wouldn't be much of an issue to work with the hotels teams normally stay at. as for the fans... they don't go anyway so you don't have to really consider them.

You don't think that's a fair criticism? After all, almost half of the conference is ineligible to participate in post-season play. what about that suggest high academic standards? what are our graduation rates? instead of the commish putting pressure (at least publicly) on presidents and athletic directors to get their program's houses in order, he orchestrated the end around. maybe when mamas & daddys start telling some of our schools no, b/c my baby won't graduate from your school we will get the message. if we can't win on the field of play can we at least win in the classroom? can we be good at something other than making excuses.

You really can't think that way.

hell..................
You got people on this board making excuses and celebrating the fact that academically ineligible schools were permitted to participate for the championship. Before everybody start clowning this guy, some need to look in the mirror. The SWAC giving him ammo to talk crazy shat like this.

Mane, nobody is making a stink nationally about the SWAC tournament. Why? Because nobody cares. Why doesn't anyone care? Because who really cares about the tournament besides those with a connection to the SWAC.
But once it left Bham, folks were suppose to start caring. Cause remember, Bham was the problem with the SWAC championships. :retard::scared:

I wonder if the main point of the article was the conference selling out on Academic Integrity to possibly (key word is possibly) get a higher attendance count for the tournament... Just a thought...

Into the '90s our schools could have wrote the book on how to educate and graduate athletes. This was when our schools had open admissions.

Now, I have problems with the APR, however long time ago our schools saw to it that the athletes were educated, or else they were gone. The academic problems (e.g. Jan Kemp at the University of Georgia) existed mostly at the big schools. I think that we need to revisit how our schools educated athletes and again try some of those tactics.

The parents have been saying negative things about our schools for decades (a lot of it untrue). Yet, it has not motivated our schools to do much if anything or tell our story.

I think that the commissioner should put pressure on the schools to get things in order but also think we need a new commissioner. However, I feel that he will be around for a few years.

Look also at the NCAA for agreeing to this setup for the tournament. I think some shot should be taken at the NCAA too.

Texas Southern playing at 10:00 and 12:30 on Wednesday had a seriously negative affect on the overall attendance. Playing in the Toyota center probably was not the best venue for this tournament.

Agree.

I thought about playing the first, quarter, semis on the campus of Texas Southern and Prairie View then have the championship games in the Toyota Center.

This is the Quote....
"The SWAC has far too long created and enabled a culture of academic underachievement. Forgiveness of the poor standards at Southern, Grambling, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State further perpetuates that."
So our basketball programs accounts for Our Entire Universities? We don't have poor Standards at Grambling, in Im going to say the same for the rest of the SWAC.
The APR isn't based on kids GPAs, Its based on Kids leaving the Program without Degrees... A kid leaving the University before Graduation has Nothing, and I Mean Nothing or Not a Damn thing with our Universities Standards... We don't have the pleasure of getting 5 white Boys who are going to Graduate in 3 years..
SO NO IT IS NOT FAIR CRITICISM
Its 15 people on a Team, if a kid goes to the NBA, D league, Europe then he doesn't count against the APR.. I don't think we or the general population really understand The APR.. UNO Men and Women Basketball has APR issues, its not because of the University Standards, its because of TRANSITION...
Name the Schools in the SWAC that have APR problems... LOOK at the CHANGES the teams have been through in the last 6 years... Coach leave Player leaves, a lot thinking they are better then they are. Transfers to Baylor, or some other school, don't make the Team can't afford School get a Job, sit out a year, Don't graduate in 5 years, takes 6 guess.. Guess what we lost points..

KNOW THE DAMN FACTS BEFORE YOU AGREE WITH THIS CAT DOWNING OUR STANDARDS

We still educate our athletes, the thing is that it may take more time then the what is allowed under APR rules...

Wait until after those tournament bids go out and then tell me nobody nationally care about the SWAC.

I care and 500 of the fans on Tuesday were from Normal, AL. After the Houston Experiment is over, the Tournament will move back to B'ham. B'ham has built new facilities.

You need to send this to the commentator.

Read about the Jan Kemp trial. It was front page news across the state.

Those reading problems at the big schools have me wondering about the APR.

We still educate our athletes, the thing is that it may take more time then the what is allowed under APR rules...

I can understand this. I thought that the APR would be a challenge when it was first released. I am trying to find the Frank Deford commentary that stated a lot of concerns people had then and have now.

I also think our administrations should show and tell what happens at our schools when it comes to educating students. The problem is that our administrators are so ineffective and clueless when it comes to promoting our schools that it is terrible. Grambling, decades ago with Robinson, Nicholson and Jones, wrote the book for HBCUs, but most others have never read it.
