The MHSAA C Spire State Basketball Tournament tips off Friday with six games at the Mississippi Coliseum.

A total of 24 boys teams and 24 girls teams will compete for a dozen of the prized gold balls, symbolic of high school basketball supremacy in the Magnolia State.

Three boys teams — Callaway in Class 5A, Velma Jackson (3A) and Baldwyn (2A) are back to defend their state championships.

Three girls teams — Canton (5A), Bay (4A) and Scott Central (2A) are back to win the same title they captured in 2013, while H.W. Byers will try to win the 2A crown after moving up from 1A this year.

Tickets are $10 per two-game session and can be purchased at the Mississippi Coliseum box office.

All championship games will be televised live on Mississippi Public Broadcasting. Semifinal games as well as the championship games can be viewed live and on demand via the NFHS Network’s Mississippi channel. Go to www.misshsaa.tv for more information.

A to Z guide to MHSAA State Basketball Championships....3/2/2014.....Clarion Ledger READ
The MHSAA state basketball tournament is here. In case you missed your prep work for the tournament, which begins Friday at the Mississippi Coliseum, here’s an

A-to-Z guide on what you need to know.

Admirals ready to break through? Gulfport hasn’t won a boys basketball championship since 2002, and will have to get through Madison Central, which beat it earlier this year, to get a shot at the program’s ninth state title.

Baby-faced Olive Branch is without question the youngest team in this year’s field. The Lady Quistors start three freshmen and an eighth-grader, and still managed to advance to the Mississippi Coliseum to pursue their first state title.

Coldwater fell to Shaw in Saturday’s 1A North title game, but not before knocking of Biggersville, perhaps the top team in Class 1A, two days earlier. The Cougars are looking for their first title since 2012.

JR...............
You better tell your people to pray Hazelhurst lose. Crystal Springs has already beat Hazelhurst 3 times this year and the closest score was by 20 points. Hazelhurst got hot and got to state with a 12-15 record.

HOME TEAM REPRESENTING!!!

 You know it.
And you also know if you want to rob anything from Crystal Springs to Hazelhurst, this Saturday is the day to do it. Both towns, 10 miles apart, will be totally empty.

:dead: Crystal Sprangs in the Final Four!! and prolly gon make it to the Finals!! And might win State??!!

That's allright!!

Good luck other Tigers!!

Dang I didn't even know Shaw and Mound Bayou were 1A now  Loving the Delta representation though

I told ya.
Don't roll down I-55 South and take on THE MIGHTY CRYSTAL SPRINGS TIGERS in any sport. :lmao:

I noticed the Delta trying to make some noise. What happened to Greenville - Weston?

This.

14-15 in 2013 and got slammed in a 5a region that required them to play a schedule like this.

Greenville - Weston 2013 schedule

They still haven't recovered from the merger yet  but for real, they just need the right coach there to get them up against those power schools in Jackson. Like my school (RCHS who GW only beat by 11) we've kind of adjusted to 3A life (still have to get used to saying that... we were 3A at the same time South Panola was in the early 90's but we went 2A the first year I was there. Went back to 3A in the mid 2000's).

Coahoma County and Eastside keep decent teams. Mound Bayou and Shaw could be monsters at 1A not having to worry about CCHS at 2A.

Yep that merger had some temporary success but for some reason the product has been worse. Very confusing....

Greenville could be a force! We keep hearing of them merging the Clarksdale schools together (Aggie, CCHS, and CHS). That would be a powerhouse waiting to happen. Ruleville used to be a force, too.

I said once they merged all the schools districts in my county (Sunflower), it would only be a matter of time before they started working on the other Delta counties. We were at the state a few years ago. We just needed to get rid of our crooked coach/AD who kept on getting all these girls pregnant over the years

I knew about Bolivar and Leflore Counties but didn't know about Coahoma. I can kind of see doing Bolivar County (they don't need 7 school districts. Cleveland and East Side need to merge) but Leflore kind of makes no sense to me. Can't remember
if they merged Holmes or not. Washington County might as well get ready. They're next. Tallahatchie as well (although I can see "them folks" fighting that merger).

Well, all I can say is that sports in the GPS has declined significantly. I graduated in 1990 from GHS and we always were in the state tourney. Hell, Weston was a monster back then too. If they would have merged the two in the '80's like they said, Greenville would have been off the chain.

Frat. Glad you got something to cheer about your old HS. You and ole Randy should go to the big games coming up.

A lot of those mergers make sense. I think the Tallahatchie County merger wouldn't make much sense since Charleston is so far from the rest of the county (except that Brazil area). If they merged those Bolivar County schools... :uhoh::eek: they keep athletes over there. I was raised in Sunflower County (Rome...don't laugh  ). I still have a ton of family in Rome, Drew, Ruleville, Indianola, etc.

People better pray Jackson Public schools don't start merging into fewer numbers. That would just be unfair to see the teams that Jackson would produce then. It's unfair now.

MHSAA Basketball Championships: Best semifinal matchups..........Clarion Ledger 3/4/2014
Each day this week, The Clarion-Ledger will break down a different aspect of the 2014 MHSAA basketball championships, which begin Friday at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson.

Here’s a look some semifinal matchups that could come down to the wire at this year’s state tournament:
Boys

S.V. Marshall vs. Calhoun City
The Tigers’ pursuit of their second Class 2A championship in three years starts with Friday’s semifinal bout against the Wildcats, who narrowly lost to Baldwyn, perhaps the favorite in 2A, in the North finals on Saturday. Calhoun City won its only title in 1988.

Pascagoula vs. Vicksburg
Few teams in Class 5A have been as hot as the Panthers, winners of their last 18 games. ’Goula has never won a championship, though it’s making its fourth straight trip to the Coliseum. The battle-tested Gators are guard-heavy, and played a tough schedule en route to Jackson.

Madison Central vs. Gulfport
The Jaguars knocked the Admirals out of the top spot in the Super 10 in December with a win. The rematch in Class 6A features more Dandy Dozens than any other semifinal bout when MC’s Xavian Stapleton battles Gulfport’s Jahshire Hardnett and Dimitri Cook
