Alabama OC Doug Nussmeier leaving for Michigan (reports)

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- Alabama offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier has accepted the same position at Michigan, according to multiple reports.
Nussmeier would replace Al Borges, who was relieved of his duties earlier today.
FootballScoop.com first reported the news. CBSSports.com has also confirmed it.
Officials from Alabama or Michigan would not confirm the hire.
Nussmeier made $680,000 for the 2013 season and was signed through 2015. According to CBSSports.com, Nussmeier will become one of the top five paid coordinators in college football.
Under Nussmeier, a Broyles Award nominee who was hired to replace Jim McElwain in 2012, Alabama's offense racked up its biggest numbers of the Nick Saban era. The Crimson Tide averaged 38.2 points and 451.4 yards per game in 2013 and put up similar numbers in 2012, when it won its second consecutive national championship behind a dominant offensive line and shrewd play from quarterback AJ McCarron.
Nussmeier's name was linked to the head coach opening at Southern Miss after the 2012 season and he was one of two finalists for the head job at Washington last month.
"Obviously I feel very, very fortunate to be a part of this program and to be the offensive coordinator at the University of Alabama," Nussmeier said in the days leading up to last week's Sugar Bowl. "I would like to be a head coach some day in the right situation, having the ties that I have to the University of Washington and understanding what that program is about, that was an opportunity for our family and coach Saban fully supported it, that it was a very good experience, and obviously very, very excited and happy to be a part of this program."

Good move for Nussmeier. Unsure about Kiffin coming to Bama. He is sort of like the Cole brothers, controversy seems to follow him.

Kiffin was contacted by Saban a few weeks back. I saw it on ESPN. Not shocked. I guess he knew his current OC was probably leaving. Saban and Kiffin together is interesting. But he has known Kiffin since he was a youngster.

That's not quite how it went.... Kiffin was brought in by Saban to "consult " Bamas offense after not scoring on multiple red zone trips against Auburn. Saban wasn't happy with Bamas OC. He felt his job was threatened and left for Michigan. He didn't feel comfortable with a 'consultant " there watching his offense practice for a week.

I said he contacted Kiffin. What is so different in what you said. Everyone saw the ESPN story that said "Consult" But you could read through all that knowing something was up if he was asking Kiffin to consult. I am also sure Saban knew what he was going to do with his OC if he was unhappy with him or either he knew the guy was heading to Michigan. This didn't happen overnight. This was all planned and the ball was rolling behind close doors. That's all I am saying. I am sure dude didn't like Kiffin coming in. Saban knew what he was doing.

Alabama's offense definetly underperformed in certain games this year, and it wasn't all on the opponent they were playing. Three trips to the red-zone, and ZERO POINTS against Auburn is inexcuseable. Auburn's defense wasn't that good.
One other thing to consider here about Kiffin (if he comes to Bama), is that Kiffin is a pretty darn good recruiter, as well as being an offensive mind. I'm sure that's something else Saban is looking at.

Considering all the weapons at Bama's disposal, I don't think the OC did a very good job! I would have love seen several major offensive threats on the field at the same time; that way the defense don't know who in the hell to key on. Give me some plays with 2 super rbs(Yeldon&DrakeorHenry), alone with Blake Sims at QB as a run threat, also Cooper and Norwood/White/Jones at WR. A series or two with this line up would be in defensible!

Bama has never had a high scoring offense. That OC took an average quarterback in A.J. McCarron and made him into a legitimate star/NFL draft pick.

Do know how many 4 and 5 star athletes Bama had sitting on the bench? The equation I had above was talking about using more of the talent that Bama has and did not even mention AJ McCarron. My equation mentioned using Blake Sims some, along with other weapons they have all at one time. Sims is more of a read-option type QB with dynamic running ability. The offense produced good #s but they were capable of more. Kinda like Bama State offense, good #s but it was capable of so much more.
I was talking about Sims being a run threat along with Yeldon and Drake/Henry in the back field and Cooper and any of the other top rated WRs. Put top playmakers on the field at the same time and make the defense defend them it they can.

I don't think so; I think Drake has pissed Saban off some kinda way. I think Saban is stubborn enough not to play a guy, despite his talent, at a position that he has at least 7 other very talented guys at if he has been crossed by that person. I am thinking Drake needs to transfer to get his opportunity to shine, he has too much talent to sit. But when you look at Henry that use to be 3rd string, it makes you think Drake may not see the field much anymore. All that talent in one back field with more guys coming in.

Interesting. You think Kiffin was already getting to Saban with some of his suggestions? Henry running the ball should be something next year. Although I think that kid on defense would be even more beastly. RBs have been devalued in the NFL.

Although it wasn't particularly "exciting," Alabama had one of the nation's most efficient offenses in the nation this year. According to Football Outsiders' metric (based on the percentage of drives that averaged 10 yards per play), Bama also had the nation's most explosive offense.

I have to disagree team. Bama is a run first team, that relies heavily on the play action pass. They are a carbon copy of those old Michigan teams accept Michigan always had and ultilized great TEs. Alabama doesn't do that as much. Explosiveness is scoring at any given second from anywhere on the field, like Oregon, Baylor, and Okie State. Bama is good, but they can't do it like them. It's impossible to have a great defense and play that type of football.
