Interesting Notes On Grambling St. Football Program

Louisiana Constitutional amendment in 1974 created the Southern University System. Prior to 1974, you had just the LSU System and all other public higher ed institutions lumped in the state Department of Education. After 1974, you have the LSU system, the University of Louisiana System (which Grambling is a part of) and the SU system.

This does not explain Southern getting their own system and Grambling not 1) getting their own system or 2) being in SU's system. You would think there would have been some outrage at GSU because Southern was awarded a system of their own. Seems as if the GSU admin back then wasn't on top of things.

so the people at Southern must have been really adamant about having their own system. gotta respect that. i just wish i had the time to read up on the different university systems.

In 1974, Grambling had just gained university status. Before then, it was just Grambling College. I'm sure Grambling was more concern with upgrading their status as an university instead of starting their own system, whereas Southern was already an University and A&M College.

Thx for the info. It's just sad to me the way things are going with Grambling. Having watched how the state of MS has done MVSU, wouldn't want another HBCU to fight for survival.

I agree, but I do believe Grambling's hands are tied due to what the UL System requires. Even if they do have a plan already developed, they would still need to get the approval of the UL System Board to implement it. Grambling has one extra sticking point, which includes 8 other State universities that Southern doesn't have to deal with. I believe once Grambling and the UL System develop the necessary system to streamline the process and close the disconnect between Grambling and the UL System, things should workout okay. But I do agree that some type of plan needs to implemented to make Grambling strong again.

Also, this is nothing new to SU. SU implemented a plan back in the late 80's when then Governor Buddy Roemer had tried his best to defund programs at SU, which was very interesting since most of his cuts to education was directed at SU. According to Lewis on this board, Buddy Roemer had a big beef going on with SU's President Dr. Dolores Spikes. All of this took place during my graduating year of 1988/89, which was right around the same time Roemer started his term as Governor.

I understand. UAPB is one of the 5 UA Sytem colleges here in Arkansas, and they have to get everything approved by the UA System. I agree that it's pretty much the same with Grambling. But my bolded statement is the point I'm making. Again, this is no disrespect toward Grambling, but it appears as if Dr. Pogue did NOT have an extingency plan even implemented, let alone one in place. I apologize if I've missed reading or hearing what his plans are to make sure Grambling and its students continue to thrive during these previously announced budget cuts.

If Grambling has ever received or receives ANY funds from state and/or federal program, they should definitely have a plan not only implemented, but approved and ready to use. The way things are nowadays on the state and federal government levels, it is always better to have and not need, than to need and not have.

I'm hoping Grambling will come out of this unscathed; I would be very happy to see the 2 largest HBCUs in Louisiana take those budget cuts and cram them down Piyush Jindal's throat! Best wishes to Grambling!

That's pretty much how I look at it.

Seems like Gram wasn't handling their business prior to the cuts and when the cuts happened they got exposed.

Bingo!

I believe some on here from Grambling do see Dr. Pogue as being part of the problem, but let’s not exclude the UL System, since they are the ones that have oversight of what Dr. Pogue should be implementing. If a year or two had past and Grambling's president hadn't presented a plan to his board on how he was going to handle any budget shortfalls, it seems like the UL System would have become concerned and took actions.

Gram would be better served in the SU System.

Amen!....Amen!....Amen!.....But that is even more of a hard sale to the Grambling folk with people like TC spouting out non-sense like he does....Believe me GSU, we all ain't like that.....

I also think Grambling would probably operate better in the SU System, due to the social and family connections. I'm sure a lot of times, Grambling is the last UL System school that gets informed on any system changes concerning policies and procedures, which is mainly due to the disconnect Grambling has with the other 8 UL System schools.

Agreed!

Grambling is entirely to top heavy, at one point the president had 5 assistants making a combine salary of upwards of 325K. we had and have more AVPs than Tech and ULM, and instead of cutting at the top, the adm. has decided to cut staff, people making 40 and 50k.

Sounds mighty familiar.

Why do we DO THIS?!

Some of y'all are so naive. Putting Grambling in Southern's system was an idea put in ole TC's head by some white dude. It would ultimately lead to closing the school down. When it comes to Grambling, nothing TC or J-State says is in Grambling's best interest.

Putting Grambling in the Southern system would make it easier to hammer us all with state cuts. Plus, how would the federal higher ed desegregation order be satisfied if Grambling moves into the Southern system?

That would be one of the things that would kill them. All them inside deals will send them further backward. Many feel like Southern would be better off in the UL system.

To be a system you have to have more than 1 school. Southern consisted of Southern in Baton Rouge (SUBR), Southern in New Orleans (SUNO) and Southern Bossier City (SUSBO). Southern had 3 schools BEFORE they were given system. All the schools in LA were under 1 system except LSU (which consisted of LSU-BR, UNO, LSU-A, LSU-E, maybe a few more ), so they gave Southern one to balance LSU having one. For Grambling to get a System, they first have to start some addition schools, (not branch campuses of the same school, but the state is not going to create any other systems. IF they would, ULL and LA Tech would have done so a long time ago.

Oh I do agree to what you are saying, which is why I'm not completely in favor of them leaving the UL System for SU System. But IMO, if things were to be done right (no inside deals), Grambling probably could operate better in the SU System then the UL System, due to the already established close relationships.

Also, the situation of having Grambling in the SU System would probably be something similar to the situation that UNO excused the LSU System of, which was the LSU System paid more attention and favored the larger campus over them. SUNO tries the same thing with the SU System, but they don't want to leave the SU System for any other system. The SU System doesn't need any additional stress added on to it.

There's LSU-S, which is where LSU's Medical School is located. Also, UNO is no longer part of the LSU System. It is now in the UL System.
